Concerning Ryo's Face Scar

So based on what I've heard:

1. Ryo has the face scar from the second you meet him in Shenmue 1

2. The intention was for Ryo to have the scar after his encounter with Lan-Di

Was this just a big error that couldn't be resolved before the game came out? I'm a little confused as to why they couldn't have just removed the scar.

In the games, the reason why he had the band-aid was from a karate tournament before the events of the game.

They just changed it for the anime since it fitted better tbh
