Even tho Ryo didn't "get it" why Mai was so adamant about Goro.

I should have prolly expounded a bit more.

After reading an interview about how Suzuki wanted to portray the "everyday life" and " humanity" in Shenmue. I've been replaying these games with that in mind to see how the characters set pieces transcends the medium in the role that they play & are used to illustrate this bigger picture. I think I've finally got the example Goro was used to sublimely portray via in my OP post.

For me, Goro is the Yin to Ryo’s Yang. In Goro we see the goodness in the world helping a bad person to overcome the darkness inside him. In Ryo, we are slowly seeing a good person being overcome by the darkness around him.
