Random Gaming Thoughts

some old games i gave up on and regret not completing:

gta san andreas (ps2)
gta4 (ps3)
paper mario (gamecube)
legend of zelda wind walker (gamecube)
legend of zelda twilight princess (gamecube)
eternal darkness (gamecube)

what games do you guys regret not finishing?

Honestly I don’t think I have too many at this point. I at least have most of the games I want to finish still in my possession, and everything else I figure must have frustrated me too much or didn’t hold my interest.

I did cheat at a few, though. First was Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire (don’t recall which) and I just remember being so disappointed in it compared to Gold that by the time I got maybe half way through I just decided to gameshark the rest of the way through it. Second was Demon’s Souls, duping stuff like boss souls and upgrade materials to get overleved and all the good stuff almost immediately. One day I want to try to finish that one legitimately, or really any Fromsoft game. I came the closest in Sekiro to the first ending you can get but got stuck on Owl and not long after all my saves were corrupted.

I'm with Heartland; I don't have too many games on my backlog that I've played a bunch, but have never finished (in fact, I believe the majority of the unfinished ones, I've never gotten around to even playing them!)

And I don't, "regret," anything (I mean literally in life; there is NOTHING I regret, as everything is either a good time or a learning experience ;)), but some games I should get back to completing before others, include:

32X:
Kolibri: The only non-beaten 32X game I have where I was right near the end (think the 19th or 20th level). It's an awesome title, btw.

Dreamcast:
Carrier: I was about 25% into it, then I saw the Prima guide on eBay for like 5 bucks, so I put it aside and waited for the guide to come in. It took like 2 months and I haven't gotten back to it since (this was in 2009, btw; LONG ass time).
Illbleed: Same thing, only I had just completed the first level and never went back to it. Superb and underrated title.
Rayman 2: 25.4% completed it in 2007 and haven't gone back to it since. Criminal of me, as this is a phenomenal game.

Genesis:
Vectorman 2: I wrote about it mid-last year, that I couldn't beat it at the penultimate or 3rd-last level; I will give it another shot.
Zany Golf: I've been playing this game since I was 3 or 4 and I've only ever made it to Energy Enigma three times; my most-recent time playing (a few years ago), I made it just close to the hole, but was ultimately a shot or two behind what was required :(

GameGear:
Ninku: I spent so much time on this, getting past the midway point of the game, then hit a wall; I didn't have a guide at the time, so didn't know what to do, but surely I can complete it now.

Saturn:
Burning Rangers: Got to either the 3rd or 4th level (can't remember and never picked it up after that... and I'm not sure why. It's brilliant.
Soviet Strike: Same thing as many above; got to the penultimate level and that was it.

Master System:
Alex Kidd in Miracle World: Yeah, yeah; I know. I just can't beat it.

I think for me its the classic Hitman games.

I remember playing a demo for Hitman 2 on the original Xbox. I love stealth games like the original Splinter Cell trilogy, so I came away finding the concept of Hitman to be really riveting: navigating a level to plan an NPC's kill through a variety of creative methods. Unfortunately, I found the games way too difficult and would fail in the most pathetic way possible every time.

Years later, I got the HD Collection for the PS3 thinking I might find those classic games a lot easier now and, yep, I still suck at them. I swear, you either have to be glued to a walkthrough or have some insane degree of precognition to know where to be in a given map at exactly the right time (or maybe just not play like me?). I felt the games wanted me to spend hours navigating a level trying and failing repeatedly to memorise everything so that only then can I use that knowledge to plan the perfect move, and I don't have the patience. I don't think I'll ever beat those classic games (especially Hitman 2), they seem really fun but are way too challenging for the likes of me.

I've definitely got a bunch of unfinished games on by backlog that I want to return to.

I was going to get back into the Witcher III and complete it this time, but then I heard they're working on a remaster so I'm holiding out for that instead. In the meantime, I think I'll work my way through some of my newer pickups like Cyberpunk and Immortals Fenyx Rising. Despite not being a massive fan of the franchise, I've also got my eyes on Ass Creed Valhalla (because Vikings!)

So many games agh!

The price of Nintendo games is ridiculous. I had Super Mario Bros Deluxe. Never really got into it so gave it to my son in law. Now my 3 year old is getting into gaming, thought it would be a game we could play together so looking to buy it again. It's essentially still full price, digitally and the cartridge.

@red's question 1CCing Golden Axe and Fantasy Zone. Could pretty reliably get to the final boss in GA, but couldn't figure out a safe/predictable strat to get rid of the minions he spawns with. I got to the final boss a few times in Fantasy Zone, but usually either fuck up in the boss rush right before and lose my power ups that I need to defeat the end boss, or actually get to him with the power-ups I need but then get defeated by my own nerves. Either way at some point I just sorta rage-quit both lmao. I'd also like to be able to clear Space Harrier one day. Never made it to the final boss, I think I capped out at stage 15 or 16 iirc. Got some more, but I'll end up writing a novel if I don't nip it here.

Man, I did the exact same thing with Burning Rangers. Same level uncertainty and everything, either stage 3 or 4. No clue why, I think I just started it at a bad (overly busy) time. Also, I have no idea how you can be so good at so many brutal games like Final Fight, and then get defeated by Miracle World lmao. Then again, I've actually never played it... getting mighty curious now. You really need to get back to Illbleed one of these days, one of my all time favorites. If you thought the first level was cool, you ain't seen NOTHIN' yet. 👺

Love the visuals of Code Veronica and appreicate the fresh 3d environments and camera pans, although I do fantasize about if they did prerendered backgrounds like REmake and REZero; how close Dreamcast might've gotten to the progressive scan Wii versions of RE0+RE.

I agree. Although I prefer the CV we got, a grafx showcase with pre-rendered backgrounds in the vein of REmake would've been nice for fanboy bragging rights. :coffee::cool:

Also, related thought: more of a proper cross gen port like THPS2 or Soul Reaver for RE2+RE3. They're classic enough the gfx don't really matter to be fair, but nice to be spoiled.

I can't 1CC FZ, but I've 1CC'd GA on the Genesis... probably around a dozen, to 2 dozen times by now? I've played it just once in the past 7 years and I uploaded it to YT; I 2CC it (or was it 3CC with no health lost on the first life? Can't remember now and YT blocked at work), but my controller let me down (you can see me trying to perform combinations/maneuvers and nothing happens; I REALLY need a new 6-Button), thus I probably would've 1 CC'd it; it's not too hard! ;)

While I've played a fair amount of Miracle World, I haven't played it enough to get really good at it. FF on the other hand, I have played more than nay game in my life, with exception to Total Annihilation on the PC, probably NBA Live 2000 on the PC... and that's it. I went from 1994-2001 without beating FF, then I beat it all of a sudden with 1 continue and 3 lives left in 2001 and I've never NOT beaten it, every single time I've played it since (when I've seen it through to the end, of course), hence why I've beaten it 217 times lol.

For some of these games, it was either all I played or all I focused on, the first 15 years or so of my life, when gaming; sure I inherited my uncle's Genesis and Sega CD, with about 45 games or so, but I only REALLY played about 15, another 20 I played here and there and the rest I never touched (ugh, Blockout). Thus, the entire games are like second nature to me; when I upload my FF run when I FINALLY do the 1CC, you'll see my movements and reasoning behind the moves and positioning that I do: it's why I was damn pissed in my last writeup, about losing *3* lives in the fire section of Industrial Area.

I NEVER get hit by fire. Ever. Ever. EVER. Due to timing being off (again, due to controller), something I've done 100s of times without fail, I lost those 3 lives. Bullshit.

It all comes down to repetition, memory muscle/reflex memory.

And yes, I MUST get back to Illbleed. Must.

So after announcing a Bethesda-developed Indiana Jones game and an open-world Ubisoft-developed Star Wars game, it looks as though EA might have just lost exclusive rights to being the only developers to make games for Lucasfilm IPs.

I'm very happy about this. Sharing the IPs to more developers rather than limiting them to just one will mean we get more of these games per year (flashbacks to Star Wars game saturation back in 2003-2005) with more variety thanks to the different talents of different studios. Who knows, maybe even Sega could get in on this given Creative Assembly's excellent handling of Alien: Isolation?

Can I get some game recs for Master System? Probably the Sega library I know least about along with Sega CD.

Given that genres are quite less than modern consoles, on the SMS, what is your cup of tea, Soap?

Off the top of my head, some games I've enjoyed are:

- All the Alex Kidds (Lost Stars, High Tech World, Shinobi World and, of course, Miracle World). Just to note that HT World is a reskin of... is it Animitsu Hime? Anyways, it's a reskin of a game based on a girls' manga, thus it plays completely-differently to the previous titles, outside of the random Ninja sections.
- Bonanza Brothers. Not as good as the Genesis version, but a super-fun title.
- Sonic 1. more of a traditional start for the series and feel right at home.
- OutRun
- Hang-On (if you have the SMS1, this is built-in)
- Phantasy Star is brilliant and a wonderful RPG. Well-worth its pricetag.
- Dynamite Dux. A wonderful Beat-'em-Up and a ton of fun, arguably one of the best games on the console.
- ChopLifter. Lots of fun and challenging!
- EnduroRacer. Also fun, has a learning curve.

There's a lot more, but these games are my experience with the console :)

Thanks Truck, just added a couple of these to my list. I totally forgot Dynamite Dux existed, especially excited to play that one. Kinda funny to remember Yu was the producer for it. Also I can't believe how good a conversion this and Hang-On look to be, what the hell.

Shmups, platformers, and really just about any kind of flat-out action game.

No problem :)

Do keep in mind that while Hang On is a ton of fun and a solid title, it doesn't quite play like the Hang On we all know and love ;)

For Shmups, you can't go wrong with R-Type and Zaxxon.

Zaxxon is the Sega classic and really should be played with the 3D glasses (you can play without, but it isn't the same) and R-Type is just a superb title.

I have both, but I suck at Shmups and they aren't my favourite genre, so I haven't devoted the necessary time to them, but they are two excellent games.

Kotor 3 rumors abound...hard to get excited when so many series I've loved revivals have turned out to be busts. Golden sun, Shenmue 3, Beyond good and evil 2 (presumably)...but I can't say I'm not hopeful. Loved those games despite not being a Star Wars enthusiast

If the rumors about Kotor return pan out it's probably more of a reboot than anything

I doubt it will be a true KOTOR 3 given that those original games are now considered 'Legends' and Lucasfilm are more focused on creating material for their new canon these days.

I hope they retell the events of KOTOR 1 as an almost 1:1 enhanced remake but with some KOTOR 2 material mixed in there too. Then going forward they could figure out a better continuation for those characters. Its probably sacrilege to say but I'm not much of a KOTOR 2 and SWTOR fan. I'm far more concerned with KOTOR 1 and how they might re-introduce that story into the new canon.
