Random Shenmue III Thoughts

Do you mean he had to express his genius in smartly implementing concepts,
while, now, he has to smartly use technological capabilities to bring concepts to life ?

If so, I think that it is more mixed, as he could improve the original project when jumping to the Dreamcast.
And, now there is the limitation of not having access to the complete inner part of the development tools.

But, yes, you have a point, this is still two complementary approaches to game design,
with the first being more about fine tuning the core of the game, while (i suppose)
the second works more on fine tuning something from the functionalities of a more constrained core.

Yea pretty much. Tho I'm pondering also about how fate has him tossed from one side of the spectrum(@SEGA) to the other end(INDIE). With having a blank check and all the leaps and bounds in technical advances today what kind of game do you think Yu would have achieved in the AAA-industry(& Shenmue) today with his genius?

I'm thinking that Shenmue 3 being less "impressive" than an AAA title might be a good thing.

In an era of pushing the hardware for a little of, ultimately, minor improvement,
if we have a more modest yet engaging game,
then it may prove to everyone how much simplicity can often be better than useless complexity.

I love how foliage moves in the wind in the survey video.

I had the same opinion with Inafune and Mighty No 9. and that did not work out so well. Legends or not, they still have to work with a limited budget and smaller team although, Yu is showing me he is making the right moves.

Though people associate Inafune heavily with the Megaman series, he actually has never been a game director or lead designer himself and instead excelled in the business part of game development. Yu Suzuki in the other hand has always been the man in charge game design wise, so the monike legend fits him like a glove because he actually created masterpieces. People only tend to acknowledge him for Shenmue, but if you think critically about Outrun for example you can see how ahead of the curve he was already. While others created racing games with competitive tracks just like NASCAR and F1 in mind, Yu focused on a open world vision creating a "cruising" type of driving feel instead in which players could enjoy the scenery while racing. And look now, the new Forza game is going towards that direction. Genius imo.

He definitely is I have 100% faith in Yu now.

I too also think that can have a positive effect on gaming industry. More daring games will be given a chance.

Getting anxious for Shenmue 3 after seeing the screenshots again.

It looks so good. Very polished considering it's got over 6 months left (I think) before release.

I'm hoping for some actual gameplay footage soon

Really? That was my single biggest gripe. The physics need some refining as it currently very unnatural.
I don't usually get tripped up on the minutia I don't expect the utmost with the resources they have. It could be improved sure, but I'm happy with it and its alpha footage anyways.

The only thing I am "worried" about is the battle system. I love the way Shenmue I and II handles learning/obtaining/training moves, and I hope it isn't simplified for Shenmue III. I will still love the game, but from what I've read, it seems that they are trying to simplify it for people who aren't great at Virtua Fighter style combat. I want to open Shenmue III up for the first time, and see every move available from Shenmue I and II, and have them all be able to be used like in Shenmue II (switching between Tornado Kick and Double Storm Kick on the same command, for example).

I think the moves will remain, but we pretty much already know the VF fighting system is no more.

Which is fine, but I want to fight in something similar. I don't want the Yakuza style gameplay where there are very limited combos/moves.

The latest screenshot actually looks great! I havent been following the progress lately but it seems like its going in a right direction.

yeah... The only concern one might have at this point is about the maps scale.... Cities could be much smaller than in previous games making the game to be much smaller in scope also. But if the game is really well done, with a good fight engine, good qte's, action scenes and mini-games, it will undoublty be overlooked. Its understandable once you get to know the games budget.
Hope the media gets that.

The fighting engine needs to be accessible to all. Ideally it should be easy to pick up but difficult to master so that people who liked the old system can make full use of their skills, yet players who are not into that can progress. It might be that they introduce difficulty settings in the game or almost have a 2 tier battle system that you choose at the start. Not much has been said about the battle system to this date so it is a very interesting discussion point.

Scale doesn't matter as long as the game is well put together. I do think it might be bigger than we initially thought. But as you say the press may not like it's sizing given the norm for these sorts of games now. Personally I don't care. Shenmue 3 is getting ever closer for us all and I have every confidence it will be an excellent game.

Ys Net just replied back and said they do not accept any direct payments. I'm disappointed, to say the least. So it looks like I will have to save up as much money as I can ASAP.

As much as I love Virtua Fighter and that was one of the reason I felt in love in first place with Shenmue, if Shenmue III is going to be more accesible it need at least be a little bit complex, something deeper than Yakuza, something that challenges you to learn more stuff and use it, even when the casual player can beat enemies easily. The last thing I want right now is a button smasher combat system.

Highly doubt Suzuki would do a button masher/Yakuza style fight engine (no disrespect to those).

Hi everybody! I created a thread in the off-topic session here, where I was discussing the possibility of having an "internacional" reserved area on the boards, for all those who can't speak english have space to share information and show their love for Shenmue like us. ( Off course it will initialy start with english-speakers )
For my great surprise, Peter agreed in let me do this poll and ask everybody if is the desire of all members in having such space here.

So I kindly ask everybody to vote and leave a comment on the thread. The link is below! Thank you!
