Random Shenmue Thoughts

I have one question about airing the books in shenmue hongkong, are the qte random here ?

I play without hud and wrote all qte aside even though I deliberately make mistakes sometime but I found nothing for these, and since some cutscenes depend on it I would like to do it right if I can.

The QTEs are random, but you can reduce their frequency by walking instead of running. They'll never trigger indoors, so you can run as much as you want until you get outside.

May I ask how you are playing as Joy? And where I can find a 'how to'?
I've posted a while ago https://www.shenmuedojo.com/forum/index.php?threads/random-shenmue-thoughts.22/post-45455
If you want to try, as always use Froklift mod loader, unpack attached archive to mods folder, so far it only works with what would be Disc 1 on dreamcast scenes. i.e scenes/01/ folder
Also, if you already have a custom textureoverride file, make a backup or fuse them together.
I'll try to find time and post more details in mod section. Unfortunately it has a problem, it doesn't let you enter some doors for some reason, so you'll have to turn mod off at some points, so far I couldn't enter Zhangyu barber shop and bloom tailor and there are other non-story related door problems too..

In my experience, they are random; the rate at which Up is the input, always varies with me.

Thank, yes I know that walking reduce there frequency but I won't be able to finish any of them without hud, so I will have to kind of cheat if I want to show the cutscenes that come after on my recording then.

I get perfect runs of airing out the books, almost every in-game day (out of the 5 days, I will sometimes get one or two days, where it isn't a perfect run).

And I run full steam always; the QTEs aren't too hard and you get a decent amount of time to do so.

I probably could if I could see them, but I play with the hud not displayed thank to one of the graphical plugin of null dc (I don't want to see button promp and clock on hud), so aside from the arcade "excite qte" and "qte title" which display their qte in the game word, I don't see any of the qte that are displayed on the hud.

Are there background mechanics at work for some of those harder arm wrestle matches? I heard there's some RPG mechanics working in the background where you get more experience with the arm wrestling the more you do it, but I'm not sure if it's ever been proven.

So while doing the scout stuff yesterday I was trying to do the Mongolian Wrestlers battles. Dodge timing was hard, so I was ready to give up but remembered you could run whilst in battles. So now I'm on level 6 with Ryo simply running away from all the wrestlers, which apparently works incredibly well. Who needs Kung Fu? Just Sonic the Hedgehog speed!

Well that's all the street fights done. My favourite bit of the game maybe, just feels so cool to have really good fights implemented within the game. Feels more technical than your average Yakuza arena fight as well, thanks to the huge moves list you have at your disposal.

Only disappointment is Afterburner. For the life of me I just can't play that game. Anyone have any tips on it? Avoiding missiles seems really tough when you can barely see them coming.

You have to assume missiles are coming at all time, and constantly be on the move. It's similar to Space Harrier that way.

Do you know all the QTE's in both Shenmue Games? I make the most failures at them. Specially the fights with Chai on the harbour and Ryo vs Nou Diu.

Feels like missiles home in more in Afterburner compared to SH. Also, I find SH much easier as each enemy has its own sound and attack patterns that are very easy to see, most of the time in AB I can't see shit once I shoot a missile. Love the soundtrack though, so its not all bad!

Anyway, cleared Kowloon today. That Yellowhead assault... love it. The Baihu fight as well rocked so much, I think I prefer it to Don Nui? Oh, and this and Yakuza are the only games that really give me that amazing feeling when I nail the counter attack moves, feels so damn good landing those in battles. Now onto the end of Shenmue 2 (good thing my copy of 3 has just been dispatched!)

Thinking more about Shenmue 2, I actually do have one complaint on the game (and only one) and its this:

Is how the day/night cycle and pedestrian movements aren't quite as complicated as Shenmue 1's were - whether it be because there's just so many more of them this time or because they didn't want to gate certain bits off if you were not in the right place at the right time, people seem to "warp" between areas at times.

There's one guy (Guanjun Cai), I ended up keeping tabs on (he owns one of the two weapon shops in Kowloon's Thousand White Bld) are he can be seen all over Wan Chai and Kowloon doing stuff, I actually laughed my ass off when I found out he owned a shop in Kowloon, ended up talking to him loads (he recommended me all types of Lucky Hit stuff). There's also one old man in the Stand? (or was it Dimsum) Qtr that has a clone of himself walking around at the same time - he's one of the dudes by the big fountain, and his clone walked right by him at one point, that was immersion breaking :( (and it always happens in that Qtr, so not a one time glitch, kinda wonder if I can duplicate it in the DC version, but I assume its just because of the sheer huge number of NPCs that little things like this can happen, must be a nightmare to keep track of them all). Night Cycle wise most people don't move depending on the time of day, like kids staying up all night etc. and its just a little inferior to how in Mue 1 you had these people following real cycles and would go home at the end of the day, I don't see that as much in the sequel. Almost all stores are open all night (a very small number do seem to close). As a game its so much better than the first game but that unique experience that 1 has isn't quite as strong here I feel.

Basically an QTE in which the game pasues and requires you to make Multiple commands I fail at! :p To me When it jumps from the directional pad to the face buttons and it looks like it Highlights the buttons in between:
So on a PlayStation Pad if it goes from Right to X, the transition will make it look like it Highlights Square to me and I'll mess it up! It could be me just being silly but it happened on most of them during my Playthrough on PS4.

Takes time, after DC, and then emulated for many years but DC buttons on screen, Steam using my PS4 controller buttons was strange. Still I did OK. QTE even when much younger were a pain to me.

I'm at the day Ryo starts the harbor job. Gonna push it tomorrow. And Shenmue 2 on Sunday. It's getting very close. I finally learned how to play in Ancestors Humankind Odyssey, so it side tracked me. But I'm at a point where it's a horrible grind. Very slow evolution cycles. On purpose I'm sure, it's near the end, so they drag it out.
