Random Shenmue Thoughts

Kariyushi shirts are one of the best articles of clothing to ever come out of Japan (technically, it's out of, "Okinawa," but Okinawa is still Japan) and it is a very Western-style of clothing.

Why must you consistently pass off your opinions as fact?
 
On my Facebook feed, it was one year ago today the Shenmue fan meet up was held in a pub in London. That was a whirlwind day for me as I went to see the Chromatics at the Roundhouse that evening, so could only stay for a couple of hours. It was nice to meet some like minded fans in the flesh for the first time and I have many happy memories of that day.

I am hopeless with names though, so I apologise if we meet again I have to ask your name again!

Time flies.... that was decent evening all round. Hope to do another one once all this pandemic settles and we're allowed to meet in large groups again.

100%. It was so much fun. I've been slowly suffering social anxiety in recent years, so to go out and meet like minded people with a shared love of something really helps! It's easier to talk to someone when you have that common interest right off the bat :)

Ryo is dead to the world until he wakes up in the morning. Hatsumoude is something people do in Japan as early as 12:01 AM on the 1st, but often in the wee hours of the morning. There's no way I know of to get Ryo out of bed at 3 AM to check.
 
Playing through 1 again since I get the urge to play it around this time each year and just got the scene where Ryo has to talk to Mai since she's hanging with those delinquent girls. I've never seen this scene in my past playthroughs. It's amazing how there's always something to discover in this game.
 
Is it just me or what, whenever I hear the uncompressed shenmue voice acting I think "It's really not bad at all..."

A damn shame sega didn't save the original recordings.

Being so used to the compressed voice audio from the games, the uncompressed recordings sound so weird, to the extent that they appear to have been recorded separately for the trailers and Shenmue: The Movie, even though this is not the case.

I've never actually played Shenmue II with English VO, but just based on that trailer, I feel like the voice work is a bit of a mixed bag, still. Some of the VA themselves, particularly Joy, seem like they're fairly decent. Generally, I think it seems like the English script is just crap. That might be one of the biggest reasons for the overall campy feeling, I think. If it weren't for that, I think a lot of the main cast might feel like a more talented group than they do. Probably wouldn't help a lot of the minor NPCs at all, though. Some of those VOs are dire.

Shenhua sounds so clear! I always felt that the compression affected Shenhua’s voice the most, sometimes it’s hard to understand what she’s saying without reading the subtitles. It would have been amazing if they could have used the uncompressed files in the 1+2 rerelease....
 
My copy of Shenmue I & II won't work :'( Ever since the version 8.00 install, my PS4 has been acting odd. It won't play Shenmue (and I tried a 2nd copy of the game and that didn't work either), but it plays other games fine. The only other game i'm having difficulty with is Tales of Vesperia (which is great as I just paid £75 for the collectors edition). DVD's and Blu-Ray all work fine, so i'm baffled.

I tried a disc cleaner, a soft reboot and nothing works. The disc randomly worked once last week, but that's it. So annoying as i'm part way through Shenmue II and wanted to finish it before playing Shenmue III again.

Have you tried entering Safe Mode and rebuilding the database? Here's a step-by-step guide: https://www.androidcentral.com/how-make-your-playstation-4-faster-database-rebuild
 
Not a major issue but one that's odd. On Steam the Shenmue Launcher music has stopped working on my PC. Game plays fine with all audio, vanilla install, no mods.

Any idea what could be causing it/a fix?

Wow, I can't believe they spoiled the bad ending! I was actually thinking about Ine San's voice actor in the first game and I thought the VA did a great job. Even in the English dub I buy her as an elderly Japanese housekeeper.

I'm also glad that my favorite Shenmue youtuber is posting again.
This channel captures obscure parts of the series that makes the first two games magical for me.
