Random Shenmue Thoughts

Seeing Yu Suzuki and Cedric Biscay tweet about their copies of Shenmue World make me very optimistic about Shenmue 4. I have no proof just a gut feeling. If you think about it Shenmue fans have been getting bombarded my new projects and updates. The Shenmue community is on 🔥🔥🔥

Shenmue 1&2 releases
Shenmue 3
Shenmue anime
Shenmue World
Shenmue Dragon & Phoenix Collection

that's pretty cool.

Maybe someone who has looked at the source code can answer this...did giving money to the people playing the song at the beginning of Shenmue II change anything in terms of luck? I guess what I mean is did giving them money effect anything in game and give you more "luck" or was it purely just all talk and nothing else?

Weird question but am curious if they were crafty enough to do something like that in the source code without the user noticing? Like changing the varience of your luck based on whether you put money in or not?

AFAIK, giving them money only had them tell you the direction to Wan Chai, that's all; the first breadcrumb in the trail.

This might not be a big deal, but I noticed that contemporary games make a big deal about taking screenshots in-game. Yet what is amazing is that Shenmue was already (once again) ahead of the curve with Shenmue II for the Xbox. Just shows how innovative Yu Suzuki and AM2 are.

I partially agree but I would say being able to take photos and play around with 3-4 filters is a far cry from some of the absolutely amazing photo modes and settings we have with games like Gran Turismo and most Sony 1st party titles.

Fair enough. This will likely sound like an argument from ignorance fallacy, but this is like saying that Grand Theft Auto 3 made a larger open-world makes Shenmue irrelevant. It doesn't negate the fact that a feature that appeared eighteen years prior was not pioneering in its own right. Also, it would surprise me if people do not build upon something that they are inspired by.

This is not to disparage what other developers have achieved, but everything has to start somewhere.

Noticed something in the extra scene with Fangmei at Man Mo Temple. It became incredibly noticeable while editing in the original audio files from the Dreamcast disc.

There are lines for both Fangmei and Ryo, that are noticeable louder and the delivery feels quite different aswell. They do sound like they came from a different recording session. Interesting thing is, they are both about the Wulinshu. Maybe they changed the name "Wulinshu" somewhere down the line? This kind of hastily applied voiceover patchwork really makes it seem like it.

I balanced the leves for the new video so here's the old DC, if you want to give it a listen yourself:

Been replaying the series again, and have noticed that Ryo appears to be eating lunch with the forklift crew at the start of each break, its hard to tell but it almost looks like an eating animation. Probably the closest we've ever seen Roy actually eating.
