Random Shenmue Thoughts

I was watching one of @BlueMue awesome compilation videos and I couldn’t help but laugh and how at the 11th hour suddenly Tom is Ryo’s best friend and everyone at the harbour and town suddenly make inference of this. I wonder if there was any more scenarios or segments that fleshed out their relationship.

My headcanon is that they became friends through Tom being American and Ryo being a fan of American culture.

I remember feeling puzzled the first time I heard Tom refer to Ryo as one of his best friends, especially because their relationship throughout the course of the game is pretty much Tom being a useful source of information. Not even close to his relationships with Nozomi, Goro, or Fuku-san, for example.

Been replaying the series again, and have noticed that Ryo appears to be eating lunch with the forklift crew at the start of each break, its hard to tell but it almost looks like an eating animation. Probably the closest we've ever seen Roy actually eating.
Yes he is. During the old forum days someone pointed out that you can see a meal of some kind during one of the scenes. I think it's the day of the Nozomi photo if I'm not mistaken.

So I've started watching the Virtua Fighter anime (and it's great fun!) and can't believe it took me 4 episodes to realise that the bad guy here has clothes that looks a little similar to Lan Di's!

I couldn't find a Google image, so had to take my own photo haha.

Noticed something in the extra scene with Fangmei at Man Mo Temple. It became incredibly noticeable while editing in the original audio files from the Dreamcast disc.

There are lines for both Fangmei and Ryo, that are noticeable louder and the delivery feels quite different aswell. They do sound like they came from a different recording session. Interesting thing is, they are both about the Wulinshu. Maybe they changed the name "Wulinshu" somewhere down the line? This kind of hastily applied voiceover patchwork really makes it seem like it.

I noticed the different audio levels when you buy different items at the shop in Shenmue II, varies between items and when purchasing if I recall correctly. Shenmue I's Japanese dub also has some lines which are a lot clearer in terms of audio quality.

It's weird how the Japanese audio for Shenmue I was almost double the size of the English audio; I wonder why they compressed the English audio so much more on the Dreamcast? I don't think anything else was taking up GD space?

After seeing gameplay from Yakuza 7 I woukdnt mind after Shenmue 1&2 recreated as a rpg. I know this would dramatically change Shenmue but it would give Shenmue a change of pace and maybe attract more fans.

By no means do I think Shenmue 4&5 should follow suit.

I am really curious has anyone ever played a game where they bother to record 3-4 variations of a line? Keep in mind unique dialogue with some characters will be generated at each new story beat.

I know most will think of it as a waste of resources but it really makes the first game in particular stand out.
