General RGG Discussion

I only played Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza 6 and i watched a whole playthrough of Yakuza 5 on Youtube.
I liked 0, 1 and 5 very much, 6 was "okay ish" ... i dont know, the pacing was weird
and the story didnt really do it for me, especially as Kazumas farewell. It was nothing special.

Also i'm not a big fan of the new engine.
The characters suddenly look like they have no soul. Sometimes the lighting looks really weird and unintended,
objects are missing ambient occlusion effects and everything is flickering on screen
because there is no anti aliasing at all. I know that the older PS3 games dont have super great lighting or animations etc
but the overall look and the overall quality is really good and matching.
Yakuza 6 feels more like a rushed beta test.

Yeah, I feel like Yakuza 6 was rushed a bit, as evidenced by some of Kamurocho being excluded from the game. I like the Dragon Engine overall, but also feel like it leaves a little bit to be desired. Although as it is used more, like with Kiwami 2, maybe they will learn to tweak some of these things.

It's basically similar to 3 and all titles with little chances in every iteration so you'll love the series or hate it

I was originally advised on the old dojo forums that Yakuza resembled Shenmue so that was initially a big reason I wanted to try it. I ended up using the PSN Japan store to get the Yakuza 3 demo and while it had the arcade games, it didn't feel Shenmue-ish... I also tried the first game on PS2 and the controls/camera felt awkward and I just gave up after 10 minutes.

I have a more open mind to try it now since Yakuza 0 has had such positive reviews. I saw a few youtube videos and it looks interesting but really don't know what to expect.

Taking the Shenmue comparisons too literally was a large problem. Or rather, the laziness of the comparison perpetuating too much. The similarities are spritual at best, and rather intriguing for any Sega/Suzuki/Nagoshi lover, but the actual gameplay and mechanics are wildly different, in a good, unique manner.

I can see why People say it's similar to shenmue eg the freeroam, but it's really its own game.
I agree ps2 yakuza was awful with it's camera and fighting controls, they really improved everything from 3 onwards. I say go for it, I really enjoyed every game there is apart from the ps2 games, thankfully they redid them with Kiwami 1 and 2 (just finished kiwami 1 and it was great with over 60 hours on the clock). You could also try the demo of Kiwami 2 on ps4 so you can try the new engine they used with 6.

What was fundamentally similar to Shenmue were a load of Sega sensibilities attention to detail and the fact that is set in a modern and realistic Japan setting (which other games have that? The majority are mostly anime-stylized games) with a fighting game mechanism and a lot of minigames. It isn't like Shenmue because Shenmue is much more of an adventure game while Yakuza has its roots in the RPG genre, with a focus on character upgrading and sidequests. The first 2 games especially, with its fixed camera, were a dead giveaway of a number of other PS2 era JRPGs. In the same way I wouldn't consider suggesting another game as similar to Shenmue, I also wouldn't say there's any other series like the Yakuza series. That being said, over the years a lot of games that shared similar elements to Shenmue have been coming out (Yakuza included), and that has piqued the interest of some Shenmue fans (but not all). This is also because people liked Shenmue for different reasons (the story, the gameplay, the level of detail), and those different suggestions usually cater only to some of its appeal while, on the other hand, offering different things that might not be to everyone's taste (Deadly Premonition/Red Seeds Profile is the obvious case, but so would be LA Noire, for instance).
In similar fashion, I'd say that the very fact that there was nothing else quite like Shenmue (or Yakuza) is what makes me appreciate them so much. At least with Yakuza there's been no complaints as we've been lucky to have so many releases in the series.

I remember being advised of the first 2 Yakuza games on ps2 off of the old dojo too.

Have to say I was greatly impressed at the time and haven't missed a UK release of the series since.

Yes it does share some similarities with Shenmue (more so now) but it is a very different game. Focussed much more on the story of the main character and a select few, which is fine. They both tell good stories that invest the player in the game and for me that is critical.

Yakuza plays excellently across all variants and I think newer JRPG titles have picked up on Yakuza and what it does well.

Maybe this isn't the right place to say this but I just wanted to put it out there. I HATE Yakuza. Like a lot. Each game is just the same monotonous bullshit, re-used assets, none of these games could tell a good story to save their life(literally the same thing happens in each game too), the side missions are all the same fetchquest crap except for each games 2 or 3 that actually try to do something unique, the mini games are half baked but are presented as these substantial parts of the game, the combat sucks, etc etc. It took this series 8 god damn games(plus spinoffs) and until last god damn year to finally update its engine and move on from 2006 but when it finally did all the fans jumped ship and hate 6 so what the hell.

These things are nothing more than half assed beat-em-ups that nobody cared about until 0 got big online for some reason.

If I had to say 1 good thing, 3 was so bad it was actually funny and I was laughing the whole way through at how crap the cutscenes and gameplay were.

I also just want to say this isn't me being a "salty shenmue fan", I really don't think the 2 games should even be compared like they are all the time. Yakuza is in Japan, has fighting, and is made by Sega and thats where the similarities end.

You hate the series but keep playing it? Each game is over 15 hours long even if you rush it. Find something better to do with your time and money.

Honestly if you've played a game or series for 30+ hours you kind of loose the right to say you hate it.

You're entitled to your opinion, an while the game stories are similar, I still enjoy them. I don't think they are bland. Have you played 0?

I hated 0 the most out of all the ones I played. I couldn't care less about the girl Majima had to look after and while Kiryus story started off interesting with him being framed, it went nowhere. Also 0 had a really bad habbit of blocking off the city to basically force you to do the story missions. After like 5 or 6 hours of gameplay you're rarely allowed to do things you want because the game is so up its own ass about its plot progression even though the story is stupid and worthless

To each their own. I loved 0 the most.

A friend of mine was basically holding me at gunpoint to play them lol. And I didn't pay for them thank the lord.

What's everyone's favorite title in the series? As I said, I rank 0 right up there as one of SEGA's best games. The rest are great, but 0 is just on another level.
0 and 6 are amazing, I'd say 0 is the better one due to the complex story and honestly seeing Majima become The Mad Dog was just amazing on so many levels... My favorite cutscene in the whole game has to be his introduction...

You are a strange person. Dont you and your friend have anything else to do than play video games? You must be very bored to play every game of the series even if you hate them more than life. Your friend must not be the brightest bulb in a room either if he buys all the games and puts you play them, and not only play them but finish them also.

Nothing personal against you, but hopefully you do realize how silly you sound?

You literally came here to complain how you have spend hundreds of hours playing video games you dont even like. Who does that?
Here is a tip for you since you probably havent figured this out yet. There is a lot of video games out there.
Im sure you will find a few for your liking. That way you will be much happier and you will actually enjoy playing video games without your friend needing to point a gun at you.
And on top of that, you will spare us from your tantrums.
Thats a win win isnt it?

Amazing.

Honestly, I can agree with Robfozz on some aspects - One feature I've never liked about the series is heavy enthasis on sidequest, while some are fun many can be a bit generic and it does end up just feeling like a checklist of tasks than someting which is naturally intergrated into the game.

That said, I do like the series very much, it's just not a game I have the patience for a 100% completion.

Yakuza 0 has some of the best sidequests of this gen, though. Miracle Johnson, the weird cult, the clumsy Japanese Rockabilly, the dancing freakshow who's wearing next to nothing, the chicken who becomes Kazuma's bowling partner, the toy race tracks. They're all great and so funny.

I’ve been talking about Yakuza with Andrew from AM2 a couple of times. After reading this is I’m getting more and more to the point where I need to jump on this ? so 0 first the going chronologically through the rest of the re-masters?
