So Last of Us 2 is getting dragged all over SNS by Users now that it's out

So I wasn’t totally aware of the mid-leading/false advertising issue with this game, but this article cleared it up for me: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.es...g-out-for-false-advertising-esports-news/amp/

I completely understand why fans would be upset. Like the article says, what Naughty Dog did in the trailers is a technique that movies do all the time. Personally, and like many of you, I feel it’s a really, really cheap tactic, despite it still be a valid one. This reminds me of an episode of The Walking Dead where they showed one major character’s death, only to reveal a few episodes down the line that it didn’t happen that way and it was the camera angle that made it look like so. Incredibly cheap.

I do still stand by the “mass refunds” thing though.

Its a thin line. Personally i have no problem with these kind of tricks, i think its okay to use it as a surprise.
BUT its also okay to be mad about it, if its a bad surprise. There are good surprises,
so i cant be against all surprises just because there are bad ones. The context is really important.

Also i'm not a fan of these kind of petitions where people want to change story things
or a apology from the creator because they didnt like the product. Thats a bit weird.
I think a creator should be able to do / tell / show whatever he wants,
without thinking purely about the fans.
That doesnt mean that no one is allowed to dislike the final product, its totally fine to dislike it
but i still think its really really important that content creators are allowed to do whatever they want.

Farming angry people and then using them to attack the creator because the angry group thinks
they have the right to outvote the choices of the creator is not the right way.

Its the same thing when people are angry about ... i dont know, sexy japanese anime games for example
and they want to ban them because they dont like them. Which pretty much implies
that they think their voice is more important than anything else. I'm totally 100% against that kind of mindset.

Disliking something for whatever personal reason and argue about it = totally okay
disliking something and feeling the need to change or ban the product just because of personal reasons = not okay
(talking only about entertainment products)
Thats how i see it.

It’s not about simply not liking the story...it’s straight up just using stuff that’s not in the final product with deliberate intent on tricking people. Imagine if the Death Stranding trailers were as is, but then after years of waiting you finally take it home and it turns out Sam is played by some B-movie actor. Or even just anyone else. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a good or bad thing or even a twist, what matters is the information in the trailers that are literally made to advertise a product.

Yeah, I realize that now. I thought this was mostly about the Abby thing, not that she isn’t part of the issue. And it’s not right, but like you pointed out before, this isn’t the first time this has happened in a video game. And again, it’s perfectly fine to have an issue with this sort of thing. But at the end of the day, what can you do?

Like @Tosh said, it’s a fine line. As far as a creator goes, they should have the freedom to do whatever they want, regardless of what the audience wants. As far as entertainment is concerned, aside from balancing potential profit and fulfilling their creative vision, they don’t have any real responsibility to the audience (for better or worse).

In this age where fans can get a movie studio to totally halt their production in order to redo the design of their main character or petition for the release of a director’s cut of a film that’s three years old (Justice League), I think it’s worrisome. Major studios are already churning out media directed towards the masses in order to gain the biggest profit. Artistic freedom was usually the first thing to go out the window. To see fandoms now potentially having an impact on that as well, it’s just hard to see how a creator would be able to flourish at all without totally compromising and/or selling out.

As the audience, all we really can do is just look to reviews first, or watch any one of these screaming YouTube clowns, or just refer to social media before deciding whether or not a piece of entertainment would be worth purchasing. The way I see it, nobody is at fault here. That’s just the nature of this whole thing now.

Social media plays a huge role in things like this. Hell it got us Shenmue III. But yeah I do think an artists freedom has slowly been eroded in favour of pleasing people for profit.

That said when I see trailer for a game i watch it, make a call to get it or not and either like it dislike it. I prefer it that way.

I think trying to go into anything spoiler-free is a gamble. I totally get wanting to experience a story as fresh as possible, but it can really be heartbreaking when it doesn’t turn out the way you expected. When the trailers for the 2014 Godzilla film came out, I remember reading spoilers about how Godzilla doesn’t really show up until the last half hour of the 2.5 hour film. If I didn’t read up on that ahead of time and just saw the movie, I probably would’ve been FURIOUS (being as big a Godzilla fan I am). Luckily, I was able to adjust my expectations accordingly and was able to enjoy it for what it was. On the flip side, I was pissed when Hulk didn’t show up in the finale of Infinity War, even though he was shown in that exact battle in the trailers.

On that note, FUCK Endgame.

2 questions.

What don't you like about Endgame?

What did you think of Godzilla KOTM?

i'm about half way through this game. gotta say the graphic style and gameplay is top notch. the story upto here seems fine.

the fact you can customise the difficulty is great. i maxed out the difficulty setting apart from the amount of ammo you find & stealth ( i kept them on standard) and its really fun.

purely on style, design and gameplay..i would love this team to create a new metal gear solid game (when mgs5 was announced I thought we were going to get something like this).. for me it ticks all the right boxes for a mgs style game.

good art style / level design.
cinematic gameplay
good enemies
great balance between stealth and combat
creative ways to engage/kill enemies
proxy battles which you can manipulate
and a good blance between a closed and open world game ( the maps/levels are just big enough for you to explore but they are not dead open spaces)
etc

That was more of a joke, but the child in me wanted to see Hulk go toe-to-toe with Thanos again. That’s my main reason for not caring about Endgame.

As for Godzilla KOTM, I REALLY wanted to like it more than I did. I saw it like, six times in the theater. But the change in the film’s tone compared to the 2014 film really did it for me. Yeah, there were more monster battles, but the CGI lacked the weight and overall believability of the first film. I still like the film, but I still prefer the 2014 film more.

I am 15 hours in and so far it's pretty much as expected (I didn't watch any trailers leading up its release) and I'm enjoying it quite a lot. My two main complaints so far are:

1. The flashbacks are quite annoying. They don't last long (up until the part I am on anyway), but I get the feeling of it taking me out of the experience. I get they fill in a lot of details but I would have preferred that the beginning is redone and you play those bits in a linear order.

2.
Ellie's quest for revenge just seems a little shallow for me. Yes, they killed Joel but Ellie knows it's because he slaughtered the Fireflies and potentially stopped a cure from being developed. They also let you and Tommy live. I would have thought she would have seen their actions were justified and would have let it go.

i just completed the last of us 2. i know people have ripped the plot/gameplay apart but i played the 1st and 2nd game back to back and to be honest, i really liked the last of us 2.

i would give it a 9/10. just the gameplay and level design alone sets the bar higher for game creators.

gonna be unpopular option but i thought the story was good, i liked it. i only had a few little complaints like the "making out" & sex scene (even in movies, i think that stuff is better implied) and the main character design of abby and her muscles.. i just felt it was out of place and jarring for the setting of the game.. also the fact she is a mash up of 3 real women (face/body/voice) didnt really help. if they wanted to go with her body type for some sort of political statement(?) why not have Colleen Fotsch do all the voice acting and motion capture? her face and voice matches her body, the same way laura bailey's body and looks match her voice.

So just completed the game and will give it a solid 9/10. The art direction; initially I was concerned it was going to be "misery porn" overdone but the grit was very artistic from the scenery to the combat. The way the characters bodies change throughout the game is also a nice touch and something that I haven't really seen in video games. For me though my biggest gripe was -

Ellie's motivations just ruined her character for me. Once she found out that the people who killed Joel were Fireflies, she should have just let it go as they were very obviously justified in their actions. Hell, I love my family but if one of them slaughtered an (relatively) innocent group people and doomed humanity, hell no am I seeking revenge. Also the fact that Abby initially allowed Tommy and herself to live should have given Ellie some sympathy but the dumbest part for me was the second encounter. Abby let's Ellie live but she still wants to hunt her down and kill her towards the end. If she ended up doing so, I would have been very disappointed with the game (which is somewhat testament to how much they get you involved with the characters). It also would of been nice to have more of a conclusion to what happened with Ellie and Abbie.

I ended up being a fan of Abby and the fact she has muscles. With that said, her character model does not look proportioned very well. Still not too sure what the negative reaction is all about. Anyway, don't think Sony cares too much as it's selling like crazy.

I don’t understand this criticism. The game spells it out for you. Remember all of her flashback scenes where she has regular proportions? It’s clear on her journey for revenge and her ongoing battle with Scars, Abbey has transformed her body into most optimal killing machine, thus her increased muscles and proportions when we get to play as her.

I mean it’s stated in several flashbacks she is obsessed with revenge and thus her training which she concentrated on at the peril of her relationships.

yeah i agree but her size is Transformers, Megatron big.. if they didn't go extreme to the size of a AAA athlete it would of been Perfect + if you see any interviews on youtube with female bodybuilders, their voices and faces change and become less feminine, imo the abby voice actress didn't match her standard body design.. but having said all that i liked her character and her story.

i though her second attempt to kill abby was fine and not stupid. her character was still struggling with the death of joel (hence the panic attacks/ flashbacks) and tommy pushed her to complete the mission. - like the walking dead graphic novel, the whole backdrop for the universe is violence and death, so people have very little humanity.

like angry joe said in his youtube review, it would of been better if they gave the player the choice, either spare or kill abby but i was happy with the ending.

i would like to see a 3rd game. would be interesting to see what abby ellie is upto in her mid/late 30s.

Is the game good if you skip all the cutscenes ?

I personally don't care about the annoying storyline when I can just skip the cutscenes.
