Stumbled upon a new Japanese interview w/ Yu Suzuki?

Another fairly new one?

Original text since the translation is pretty hard to understand:

That machine translation hints at some pretty interesting stuff...

Assuming he was talking about that amazing-sounding floating castle pirate fantasy game we've heard about a couple other times. Seems he's holding out hope he gets to work on that.

I'm vaguely reading through the Shenmue part now.

Bit of a rough translation of what I've read so far

---------------------------------------------

Q: Next, I think we should talk about Shenmue.

Yu:
Shenmue has several keywords, one of which is Seamless. It is also a system to give a sense of unity.

I hate cut scenes that players can't participate in, so I used the word full-reactive with an ideal.

I wanted to be able to move the camera as much as possible during cut scenes.

In Shenmue II, there was an escort system in which the player was led automatically, but was still given the freedom to look around the scenery at will.

Interaction is the game’s greatest strength, so I wanted to eliminate scenes where you can't intervene.

My way of thinking is to increase the number of scenes that you can intervene with.

Q: That means you can fully immerse in the world of the game?

Yu:
When you give a little kid a toy, they can grow tired of it rather quickly.

But if you give them a tablet that runs software, makes noise and reacts upon touch, then you will always interact with it. When you receive feedback to your interaction, it’s a joyous sensation.

Hence I thought it would be fun to make such a world in a miniature garden.

You may hear a trivial silly little anecdote from one town resident, but its like “if you talk to this old man then you might hear something interesting”

It’s a travel experience. It’s more of an experience than a story.

There is a series of “Let’s Play Videos” called “Shenmue Yokosuka Burari Journey”, but I think it’s a good name for it.

----------------------

"It's more of an experience than a story"

I tend to agree with him. No seriously, I think this is what I love about Shenmue even more than the story or lore. I love that it is almost a travelogue game. It's a series that literally has you travelling from place to place learning new techniques and learning something new about life in the process. Maybe this is why I didn't dislike III as much some of the others here did....because I felt, for the most part, he gave me more of what I love about Shenmue....anyways, I'm still reading. If I see anything major I'll translate it (roughly) and throw it in here.

The intro reminded me of the GTA radio stations. :giggle:

Honestly, in regards to Shenmue, there ain't much we haven't already heard

-- Crowd funding was a good jump start, but considering the scale of the game, they needed the help of a partner to realize Shenmue III to a satisfactory level.

-- As for the future, talks more about about the "fantasy" RPG idea he has...but nothing really in here about the future of Shenmue past what we've already heard in other interviews.

A little bit in there that seems to be in regards to the industry itself...but this mostly fluff we've heard in other interviews by the looks of it...nothing in here about how the game performed or the future of the franchise.

Will maybe read both parts when I get home from work...but I didn't see anything drastic worth translating fully. Not unless @Switch spots something within it.

Looks like he originally wanted to break with his typical image, and try something fantasy related, back in '95, before settling on the project that became Shenmue. He talks about fantasy being an easier genre to avoid unrealistic behaviors with. Like if a vehicle drives all messed up like, it can be more readily brushed aside with the idea that it's supposed to be like that. So he thought that wouldn't be a meaningful way of improving his abilities. He kind of laments that he planned to just start with Shenmue, with the intention of doing the fantasy project afterward, and 20 years ended up slipping by.

Such a shame this’ll probably remain lost to time, but exciting to hear this concept is still on his mind.

Was any of the footage in that YouTube new? I don't recall seeing any footage of Ryo being modeled released before. Assuming Yu Suzuki doesn't talk about anything new based on how the footage looks, but I don't understand anything he's saying!

Nothing really interesting.
- Shenmue (VF RPG, I guess) was born from his desire to create less-restrictive RPG he himself would enjoy.
- While "reality" aspect is important, first and foremost his games are "entertainment".
- What matters is not size but density of the world. This is what enhances the sense of freedom.
- "100 different storylines for 100 different players. That's the world Yu Suzuki wants to achieve".
- I want to keep finding out/inventing new things with the same "pioneering spirit" (that previous games had).
Everything else is just general description of Shenmue.

That footage looked new to me.

My search terms:

1. "鈴木裕" "シェンムー"
2. "株式会社YSNET"

In case anyone else is bored someday.
Nothing interesting in the months since I've posted this. I still check some Japanese job sites fairly frequently to see if Ys Net is hiring as well... nothing. Any ideas on other terms to search?
