General RGG Discussion

It is a risky move for sure. But such things always happens to Long running series. Resident Evil had to deal with that with 4, MGS 5 is also a far cry from the old games.

But the only Question is if these changes are a smart move or not. Although I hate Re 4, I have to to say it wise a smart move to turn the Game into a bland Shooter. Shooters will always attract the Attention of the main stream that did not like the original Survial Horror direction of the old RE. So the series alienated from the old fans could easily generate new fans.

In the case of Re the bold Change of gamplay worked.

But I also do not think that the change in Yakuza will have a similar Impact. We have to be realistic here. Yakuza is niche It has a certain appeal to some people . Making the game even more niche with the turn based Combat could go very wrong.

Because it is unlikely that some niche fans could be replaced with other niche fans that are into turn based Combat.

Might work in Japan but I am not sure if it would work in the west..

Can we consider Yakuza niche anymore? certainly in the PS3 era, it was so unpopular we never even got a physical Edition of Yakuza 5 - Something the Remastered Collection is finally correcting! But Yakuza 0 & Yakuza Kiwami have reached the PlayStaion Hits brand of games - Which I assume is still like the old Platinum Range system in where a title sells well, they re-release the game in a sort of budget branding way.

I really feel Yakuza has comeback in a big way this generation just like the Resident Evil series - because it has managed to make the series accessible:

Come Feburary, PS4 owners will be able to play All 7 main Yakuza entries + Judgment on the PS4 - which is a wonderful thing! + As mentioned earlier Judgment exceeded SEGA's expectations and they still have interest in expanding that series (Still playing through it myself). I mean if we're comparing it to the yearly CoD & FIFA range of AAA I don' think sales compete (sadly), but when I look at the PS4 and see series which have thrived off the system, Yakuza is one of the series which instantly comes to mind... so I really question if it is niche - I'd be interested to see the sales figures.

As for Yakuza 7, I really hope old fans don't £$%& over this new direction - We've even spoken on this thread about how the series needed something new & exciting and I really feel this is the kick up the $%£ the series needed! I think as we're starting of with essentially a new saga that it is more acceptable - it would be too left field if they made this decision with Kiryu's Saga. But with a fresh new character, story, location... a daring new spin on the gameplay is just what this series needed - & I so excited for this!

I wonder how exploring Yokohama will work with a team? Will the party members appear in certain story scenarios only?

Western trailer just launched! (No logo, just dubbed):

And now the Yakuza Remaster Collection just got cheaper! £42.99:

I like the change honestly, and hey:

My main questions all revolve around the plot, and just how much of the Omi stuff will be covered in this game. Glad that Arakawa and Sawashiro are in, they were cool in what little of RGG Online they are used plot wise. New city sounds cool, plenty of activities there I bet! Will probably import based on the demo, just gotta see if I can understand how to play it in Japanese.

Holy shitto, they tricked us hardcore with this april fools trailer and the Gamescom interview ? well done.
I have absolutely nothing against a new combat system. If they want to make some kind of fresh new start
why not change the combat too, no problem for me. The character models look fantastic!
Tokyo Game Show will be awesome

The only thing with this new combat system where i could see a bit of a problem is your combat party group.
Are they just spawning if you enter a battle and you dont see them while walking around?
How does this work in the story if Ichiban enters some story building and there is a fight,
he will be solo in the cutscenes i guess, whill he then still fight alone or will your friends just suddenly be there
and then despawn again like they were never in this scene?
You know, is it more arcade or "gamey" with the visible / invisible combat group, will the group be in every fight,
even if it doesnt make any sense because Ichiban should be alone
or is your combat party only in a fight if it makes sense for these story pieces.

I wanted change in Yakuza but the combat system wasn't really what I had in mind lol. It's pretty cool that it will be set in Yokohama though, or maybe part of it will be with kamurucho returning? It looks like once again we are playing a Yakuza that doesn't kill though. Kiryu was a supposed to be a stereotypical old school honour bound type of gangster so I kind of get it (although in real life I doubt even the most honour bound gangsters refuse to kill). Majima not killing made no sense to me though.

I'm wondering if Party based combat will be isolated to just story based missions, well and Sub Stories - A scenario based event. then when you stroll around Yokohama you will just be the on your own. Otherwise It will certainly be odd to have them appear & re-appear every battle.

Considering the story of RGG Online and Ichiban's backstory in the first place, I guarantee that at least part of the story will take place in Kamurocho. PART.

I could see a flip flop of Kamurocho and Yokahama, ala Kamurocho and Sotenbori.

I don't really care about the battle system, as I can adapt to any style, system or control scheme; I've always maintained that if you cannot get used to a new system/scheme, you simply aren't a good gamer and you can go kick rocks (MDK2 and Fur Fighters got FLEECED back in the day, because they used the DC's face buttons for movement; not only did it work brilliantly, but people gave it 3/10s and 1/5s because, "I can't get used to this control system." Good for you, you suck, because I can get used to it no problem).

Sorry, rambling again.

I guess they figure, new character, new battle system. Perfectly cool with that; it will win fans back (the ones who don't like turn-based) if the execution is perfect, thus they should worry about that in the last few months of development and knock the demo out of the park, in order to show the detractors that it works and works well.

I'm just excited that we finally have a release date! :D Any word on who is doing the music? I know they don't normally announce it right away...

Regardless, super glad to see this all coming together! :D

All the hate this is getting elsewhere confuses the hell out of me. Why is it okay for long running turned based series to become ARPGs but not okay for long running ARPG series to become turned based?

I applaud the risk and also that they acknowledge that & willing to go back to the tried and tested if fans dont like it.

I will buy this game to try the new mechanics and see how it goes. I'm sure I'll enjoy the story regardless.

Yup, that's the way I feel as well. I see some people getting rather (comically) angry, I can't recall the last time I've seen this kind of anger on a game (people acting like its the end of the world, my tip would be don't read the news, now that's depressing stuff)...

I'm not even sure I'll like the change, I just don't feel like I want to speak too critically until actually playing the game (madness right?). I do wonder how certain things will be handled in the game (boss fights especially) but the team has been making amazing Yakuza games for over a decade so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
Plus, the great thing is, even if I'm lukewarm on the combat, the game will still have all the other content I love. And a brand new city to boot!

You're absolutely right...

But Yakuza was never an RPG; its a Beat-'em-up, with Action-Adventure tendencies.
No, it was always an rpg. Everything about it was rpg and even more so with each new game. It just had a brawler battle system but if you look at all the other systems of yakuza it is obviously an rpg.

Thirteen years ago I saw a new PS2 game that looked like "Shenmue meets Streets of Rage," and I've been buying the series day one ever since - often before owning the consoles to play them on.

I don't like, have never liked, and never will give a damn about turn-based combat. So they've lost me with this.

I'm just glad they waited till after Kiryu's story arc was finished, because it means I don't feel any anger or frustration. Just remorse that I might not have any more of the games I loved to look forward to.

I still wonder...would the anger be less so if they had left the name Shin Ryu Ga Gotoku as opposed to making it a numbered entry?

As in treat it as a brand new thing as opposed to giving the impression it's still apart of the numbered series?

I don't know...I wonder if people would be less angry if they were treating it as a spin off?

Wait, who am I kidding? It's the internet...the Internet can't help but get mad at something every waking second of the day.

Don't want to get into it, but it is NOT an RPG; the only RPG element it had was that the first few games, had you leveling up certain skills; that ended in 4.

It is a Beat-'em-Up through and through and always has been.

Not even debatable lol.

If you consider the series to be RPGs, then literally any similar game is an RPG; Binary Domain, Vanquish, Bayonetta, SHENMUE, GTA etc.

If people are that miffed over a name, then they have even LESS of a life than the Epic people.

Well when you're right, you're right.

Even as I look at the Facebook groups spazzing out...it's usually the same type of comment

"What have they done to my Yakuza?" or "EWWWWWW TURN BASED BAD!"

So you're right, the name is probably the least of the issues.

Still, this spazzing out is amusing me to no end.

I mean it's one thing if you don't like it and move on with your life...that I can accept. But some of these motherfuckers treat it like RGG Studios killed their dogs.

You can pretend it's never been an rpg all you want, doesn't make it true. But have fun in fantasy land! I aint got time to argue senmantics all day. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
