General RGG Discussion

Damn they better not bring Kiryu back for Yakuza 8. That'd be far more insulting than switching up the combat. Then again, I trust Nagoshi far more than random people complaining online (not here, I mean other forums!)

Though thinking about turn based combat... wouldn't Panzer Dragoon Saga technically classify as turn based? As that game went from on rails shoot em up to RPG and its still pretty much the best game I ever played (definitely the best RPG I ever played). Not that I can really use this example against the masses elsewhere, that game is rare enough (and on the Saturn to boot) that most people haven't played it. Which is criminal :(

Anyway, on actual Yakuza progress! I've finished the 100 man brawl as Shinada tonight. It was annoying, I was getting to the last round and losing several times over. Managed it in the end, glad its done. Now I only have to do it again with Akiyama. Well, and Kiryu and Saejima but at least 2/3 is actually fairly straight forward.

I still really want to play that...never played it. Don't know if I can justify throwing $800 AUD down for a game I've never played on Ebay....should look into the Emulation route one day, I suppose. I imagine it can be played in full on emulators? Don't really keep up with Sega Saturn emulation, but I know it's gotten better than where it once was though.

It's criminal that game has never been released else where...but who knows? Maybe one day Sega will reverse engineer it (or emulate it) and re-release it for modern consoles. Would be an interesting project for M2 to get their hands on. If we can get Final Fantasy VIII remastered when it was long rumored the source code for that game was also lost then we surely should be able to get Panzer Dragoon Saga some day.

No Kiryu anymore for god's sake. No player deserves to play as a 70 year old grandpa avatar (by Yakuza 8 and beyond) trying pick up 20 year old hostesses or work as a mascot. Let the character die with some dignity please.

yeah but you cant tell how real or scripted it is.
i think the whole outcome of this video and all the small little details and funny things are too perfect for some random fight.
imagine all these little animations and random surprises in every fight, it sounds a bit too good to be true.
thats why right now i think most of the random encounters will not look like this.
i'm not against the new combat system but i can not imagine that every fight will look like a perfect sequence.
if we look at their other combat systems for example Majima Constructions it was way more basic
and i dont know how realistic it is that they will have a completely new system now thats like already 110% optimized.
i'm sure we will see some real scenes from the game at TGS.

I live in Yokohama, so I’m looking forward to it. The picture of the combat is of Minato Mirai/Sakuragi Cho area. My wife and I often went there when we started dating. Considering this game allows you to use more than one character at a time like in a traditional RPG party, I’m very open to this change and it might reflect Ichi’s personality more accurately. I assume heat action could work like limit breaks in FFVII, but I can’t say for sure.

I know Suzuki recently said that people have the idea that “different=bad” in an interview, and I see that people are having that impression with Yakuza 7.

Yokohama is probably the thing that has me most hyped for this game, I totally expected (and would be fine with) Kamurocho as the battle ground, but we are getting something brand new and I'm excited to see the city :)

What I'm not so happy about seeing is how some "long time" fans elsewhere (guess where!) are now starting to gatekeep any positive opinions on the game. As in - your not a real fan if your not outraged. Its turned into a cesspit of negativity and whining. So I've bailed, no point staying in a place that just is so hilariously negative which kills any actual discussion of the game. I'm just waiting for TGS myself, to see just what is shown. Then it'll be onto the demo so I can get a feel of the game myself.

Honestly, stuff like this just makes it exhausting to actually discuss the series...

On the brighter side, Yakuza 5 continues to go well, I should hopefully be done with the 100% next month (I'm being very generous with the time I need!) Hoping to get the heat moves ticked off tonight, alongside the modding and the rest of Shinada's arena fights if I can.

Sometimes I think a heavy narrative driven game like Yakuza needs to Hard-cap(sequel cap) itself so the studios can move on to greener pasture and we can get a fresh breath of air with new IPs to build up their portfolios. Suzuki's philosophy of trying new things(Risks) vs sticking to safe territories really permeates through in a way in this event. This is why he always establishes one style of play for each IP and never mix it up and piss off fans. He just goes(Risks) on a new IP if/when he wants to try his hands at a new Genre/style of play.

Wish it was an Original IP but atlas RGG don't have the AM2/Yu Suzuki portfolio/weight of many franchise hits after hits behind them to probably get the OK from Sega. So falling back on an establish Franchise was a safe bet. They just didn't expect this level of backlash.

This reminds me very much when Square couldn't trust in the Saga(new) franchise and re-named it into a Final Fantasy brand in the west till they realized it's a gem of a game in its own right and restored the name back.

I will give the game Chance for sure as well. Although I am not happy about the change it is no deal breaker for me at all. I play the Yakuza games mainly for the storyline and the atmosphere and not because of the Combat System.

The Combat in the old games was fun, but is not my main point of interest for the game.

If the new game has a nice Story with great characters and atmosphere and the turn based System is not complicated as hell, it is very likely that I am going to enjoy it.

Going by the trailer I'd say its got the characters and plot down solid. Granted they've only shown 5 minutes of it, but going by past experience I've no reason to doubt the team in this regard. Plus there will still be a ton of side activities to do (and apparently the city is bigger than Kamurocho...)
My main favourite parts of the series is the setting, the flashy moves, the side content and the mini games. Even with the genre switch for combat, there's not really any reason for me to assume the rest will drastically change (at least, not for the worse). I'm really excited to see what the arcade might contain, I'd laugh if Spikeout finally makes it in as playable (look, proto Yakuza combat!)

Just letting you guys know the Pin & Botte Cap Opener Set is back down to £9.99 Each £2 Postage @ SegaShop.co.uk!:

That's a nice pin set... I might have to buy that. I do love those badges as well...

Anyway, spent more time with Yakuza 5 arena with Shinada. Was going great, but I've got one last set of fights including beating Komaki and Akira... shit!

Anyone know who voices the boss in Yakuza 7? I recognise his voice but I can't remember from what.

I honestly don’t know which outrage is stupider, this change of the combat, or the whole Epic Store thing

GEE! I wonder where you could possibly be talking about? Wouldn’t start with an R now would it? ;)

If it is where I think it is you’re talking about; then for a place that loves to proclaim how wonderfully inviting, progressive and open it is, it sure does strike me as being full of gatekeepers and closed minded saps who just want to be angry at anything and everything.

I imagine there will be a demo released around TGS (there usually is a demo released beforehand) so I’m kind of waiting for that. But based on that April Fools Trailer, I’m really excited by the potential of it. That April Fools trailer just looked fun as all hell to me.

But yeah, I don’t really see the point of being negative over it. And this whole “you’re not a true fan if you accept this change” can go and fuck right off. I’ve been playing these games since the PS2 days. My first Yakuza was Yakuza 2 for the PS2 which I played on my overpriced 60GB backwards compatible PS3 (before it yellow lighted) and I’ve absolutely loved the franchise ever since. I was the guy pining for Sega to translate both Y3 and Kenzan when it looked like Sega had no interest in localising them.

I was the one bemoaning the loss of Mahjong and Hostess clubs in Y3 (even though I had no idea at the time how to play Mahjong; I do now though.)

I was one of the guys begging for Yakuza 5 when the chances were grim after Yakuza Dead Souls kinda flopped. I was begging for the PSP games to come over to the west and signing petitions (even though I knew we had no chance because piracy really killed the PSP and its software attach rate)

I consider myself a “true fan” of this series and if anyone dares to try and tell me “you’re not a true fan” for liking much needed change then they go and fuck themselves!

I will accept their right to be concerned about a radical change or even to not like such a radical change, and on some hand I can see their point...it is a risky move...but I like the fact that it’s a risky move. But if anyone ever dares to tell me “you’re not a true fan” for liking this change then FUCK ‘EM!

Because I’ve been with this franchise for a LONG ass time. And I’ve been supportive of this franchise for a LONG ass time.

all of the Sega games and presentations at TGS will be live streamed on Youtube
and of course Yakuza 7 is in the Line Up, so we will see real gameplay, screenshots and all that stuff.
they didnt update the schedule yet, we have to wait a little bit.
i'm still super excited. Yakuza 7, Nioh 2 and Shenmue 3 all in one event o_O

As with any game from RGG, I'm already 100% in on day one. As others have said, I mainly play these games for the amazing stories, characters and location. I was surprised when I saw it was turn based but I like that style of game (Persona etc) so I am extremely excited.

Either way I have really gone off reading other forums when it comes to people's reactions recently. The outrage culture that has appeared in the last few years is just straight up fucking stupid and it's really starting to get way out of hand. The thing that I hate the most about this specific announcement, is that everyone was so damn quick to pounce on them. They've only released a very seconds of the combat and people already shitting themselves. Everyone is acting like RGG is some kind of rookie studio who don't know what they are doing... It's like their insanely positive track record doesn't exist. Have some damn faith in them!

They obviously knew that making this kind of gameplay switch would be a huge change, so clearly must be very confident in the turn based system that they have created. After the follow-up statement was released, you can tell that it has some very cool, unique and deep mechanics and that a lot of effort and thought has been out into it.

I guess they could have done a better job of explaining the gameplay, in a deep dive kind of video, but I assume that's what we will see at TGS. I think it will be glorious!!

I find it funny(sad) how quite a few people are now actively wishing Yakuza 7 to fail. (Edit: I have removed my original comment here, while it is 100% true and feel there is a double standard, I dont really wanna contribute to any drama on this site)

Like if it fails then that just tells Sega you dont want Yakuza games. And then we'll just be back to where we were before or even worse off. Like I get it, you dont want a turned based Yakuza game but wishing for it to bomb isnt going to help you in any way. Just dont buy it, its really that simple.

The best ways to let Sega know you dislike this move is filling out the surveys RGG Studios and Sega puts out after like, almost all Yakuza games which they take seriously.

Or I guess you could hope the game sells well but it reviews poorly. Hoping for it to fail totally in all manners though, you are just playing yourself.
