General RGG Discussion

The whole "imagining the world as an RPG" is such a interesting idea that can lead to some wonderfully reality bending moments, I kinda wonder if RGGS will capitalise on it, or try keeping it still somewhat rooted in reality. Very interesting to see how that plays out.

As for the discussion on length and such, it sounds pretty crazy. So the game world is basically bigger than Kamurocho (which is pretty big really for the series, especially with all the stuff you can do) and then at some point (I assume later in the game, unless they are talking about the first chapter before he gets shot) Ichiban is in Kamurocho. Gotta wonder just how big the scope of the game story and content is. I'm not saying it'll be bigger than 5, but easily the biggest Dragon Engine game, maybe bigger than 0 as well? Pretty mad if true.

The Yokohoma city area itself is 3-4x larger than Kamurocho, so if all of Kamurocho is in the game then it could be as nig as Yakuza 5 already but i didnt play that yet so i dunno. There are 5 cities in y5, right?

See, I always take the "X times bigger" thing with a grain of salt, as they actually have to fill that with content as well. 5 had 5 cities sure, but those cities were all way smaller than Kamurocho with less to do, its actually quite noticeable in some cities where the activities feel somewhat limited compared to just how much Kamuro has. But at the same time 5 also had 5 playable characters with Another Drama segments for 4/5 characters, which in turn added lots of unique content...

Its really hard to gauge just how bit this is going to be until I can play it and see what you can do in the game world.

sounds all good. i mean i'm glad that the people of Sega allowed this.
so far all of these things sound positive and fresh to me.
i think its pretty cool that we finally have a character who cant fight against 50 people just on his own
and i love this typical japanese humor from the April fools trailer -
but if these "female distraction combat options" will be in the final game,
i can already smell the incoming sexism discussions.

Everything I'm reading sounds legit interesting. If RGG redefines turn base into a solid (Action-turn base)ATRPGs with this game, that's one permanent mark in the Videogames history books for this studio. I hope they really pull this off. I think this maybe my starting point for the yakuza series since it's sounds like such a fresh starting place with no baggage of prevs plot/installments and a good entry point into the franchise with a new potential genre redefining gameplay. A new level of immersion for turn-base rpg's if everything works out.

Probably true and maybe justifiably as well. We will see.

Sexism and PC related stuff doesn't apply to Japan. They are on a league of their own.
Take Hideki Kamiya for example as how he handles criticism from the likes of Kotaku.

i mean i'm really not a male chauvinist, i never have any problems with women in my circle of friends
or with the girlfriends of my buddies
but i still think that this typical RGG Studio humor with all the cliches and awkward scenes is funny.
i really dont understand our western approach where everything is a no go nowadays.
cant make fun of this, cant make fun of that ... "what-did-he-say???!!! omg!"

you can watch and play these "females are pretty and nothing else" scenes
and still be a nice person in real life. its just entertainment. if you cant differentiate
between a entertainment product and real life or a fictional and a real person, its your problem.

thats why i hope that all of these japanese studios will always do their japanese thing
instead of focusing on western markets. our moral values and issues shouldnt be a topic in the origination process
of a entertainment product in a country on the other side of the world.
if you dont like it, dont watch / consume or buy it, i think thats a pretty easy step.

I still think it's weird that "Sex = bad, but violence = A-okay"

Take Tomb Raider for example. Old Lara Croft gets ridiculed for being a sex symbol all because the character showed a freaking mid driff and wore short shorts. Yet new Lara Croft gets heralded as some sort of genius reinvention...even though through the bulk of the first re-boot (I only ever played the first reboot), she's always presented in situations that sometimes felt straight up fetishistic in her suffering. Like they really focus in on her uncomfortable suffering at so many points in that game and it does ultimately feel fetishistic.

I'm not a prude; I don't oppose violence or sex in video games. It doesn't greatly offend me, but it does make me curious why the sexy confident woman (who was arguably role model for some girls I knew in my school growing up) is considered outdated and sexist, yet this new Lara Croft who was subjected to suffering in an almost fetishistic way is this amazing standard for female protagonist...all because they dressed her up a bit and got her out of the revealing outfits.

I don't know...I think I'd rather take the old Lara Croft with the mid driff and the shorts....at least she was presented as confident and a bad ass. The new Lara never sat well with me.

Sex is not a bad thing and its always made me wonder why we try to demonize it as if looking at a sexually appealing woman will suddenly make you a sexist monster?

And yes, that's the only answer to all of the madness...if it offends you then don't watch/play/listen to it...but don't deny others the right to play/watch/listen to it.

But anyways, this is off topic.

There is the 1:1 guide on KHHSubs for Kenzan! and a phenomenally thorough guide on KHHSubs for Ishin!

Just buy the games and play them like that, I don't get why people won't do this...

I am going to do that. Was my plan in the first place anyway but I decided to wait because I though there stil was a slim hope for a western release of both games.

We want to prove that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio can properly create something other than an action adventure game.

I'm not reopening the conversation, @ShenmueTree, but if the developer themselves call the series AA (of which Beat-'em-Up is a subgenre of), then yeah, its NOT an RPG.

And that's the end of that!

You made a super-wise choice :)

Yakuza kart racing game when?

@KidMarine

Not so much Kart Racing, but a serious racing game as a spin-off?

Or, a racing game with Beat-'em-Up side-gameplay as well, would be absolutely killer.

Give it a deep plot, with the Tojo Clan or Omi trying to invade a racing league, etc.

Seriously, I would be all over that in .5 seconds.

What counts as PC? Because judgement being delayed while they completely remove one of the actors (who plays a gangster) because he consumed cocaine, is pretty politically correct if you ask me. To be honest the Yakuza series seems to shy away from certain themes to not offend the Japanese public as well as avoid that adult only rating in Japan.

Yakuza wouldnt really benefit from a official Cero Z rating, they could only show more blood and gore
and they could show softcore sex scenes (not explicit scenes).
And not even that much more. The Resident Evil 2 Remake has a Cero Z rating in Japan and its still heavily censored
in terms of amount of gore. Witcher 3 has a Cero Z rating and the gore and all scenes with nudity are still censored.
Even if Yakuza would target a Cero Z rating, there would still be no explicit nudity and no explicit gore.
There is no japanese videogame rating for console games that allows you to show whatever you want. Its impossible.

So we have to deal with the japanese restrictions, RGG Studio can only work within these laws
and their japanese moral values and i think its fine that we have to live with that. They are offering something
and we can consume it if we want to.
But i think its not okay to tell them they cant do this or that just because people in your / our (probably) western country
dont like that stuff. Thats why i hate all the typical board threads where people in the west demand
changes or censorship for asian games because "these things are not okay, it shouldnt be allowed!".
If you dont want to watch, play, consume or buy something because you dont like it, then dont watch, play, consume or buy it,
whats the problem?

What happened to that actor from Judgement was not to conform to what is seen as the norm of today. It always has been a cultural part of Japan since ever. It's called "Jishuku" (self-restraint), basically an unwritten law obligation as a member of society to perform as expected. It can be seen applied during natural disasters when you see the entire country refraining themselves from any display of happiness or celebration (no weddings or parties), so the Western equivalent would be akin to mourning. Anyway, part of it also deals with someone breaking the law too. In that case, a company or person should not profit from the law breaking person's work. It's not even a choice, as crime association reflects on the group as a whole. And it's worse when it's drug related as East Asian countries like Japan and China fear drugs more than anything as they are witnesses of its consequences in their own history (Opium Wars and aftermath WW2 Japan).

Almost done with Yakuza 5 now. Cleared almost all of the gambling today (only have Poker left). Koi Koi is the game that once again put up a pretty huge fight, as the AI decided it wanted to win all the time! So I took a break, actually learned a couple more hands I'd been unaware of, and then got into a really good win ratio against the AI! Also did Air Hockey (pretty easy really, no second set like Ping Pong means this went way quicker), batting center (math is no fun, why is it here?!)

Now its just the slot machines, Poker and the last Karaoke song... and the last of the side stories and arena. 140 hours so far... yeah, I really should pick up the pace!
