I got to play the demo at the Yodobashi Camera outside Yokohama Station last Saturday. There was supposed to be an autograph event with Nagoshi but couldn’t stay because I had work around that time (I’m in no position to take the time off, got a family to support along with my gaming habits lol).
Since I only had a 20 minute time limit, I had to skip the cut scenes and I couldn’t find time to try the mini-games, so most of my time spent with the demo was semi-exploring and a lot of combat. The RPG elements are very much in tune with the franchise of being brutal, comedic, and over the top. Fundamentally, the combat does feel the same but as a turn based RPG with more natural movement. It’s really fast paced and for those that don’t play J-RPGs, it’s very noob friendly and easy to pick up (then again, I am proficient in Japanese). Considering you have a party with you, I think the RPG gimmick fits well because you get to play as each character in a sense.
The heat works like magic in a traditional RPG, and has QTE elements with some characters such as Adachi’s attacks. With the homeless character, like in the trailers, he’s the guy you want to use for heat attacks since they’re so gimmicky. He breathes fire through booze and he throws bird food at opponents to make pigeons attacks opponents.
I only had a small chance to the job system. All the males can be yojimbo, hosts, or dancers, and Ichi exclusively has the hero job. As for Saeko, she can be a mama-san or an idol. As an idol, she’s pretty much cardcaptor sakura including the wand lol.
As for Ichi, he’s really funny as a character. When he fights lets say a regular old man, he “imagines” him as this evil yakuza lol! It’s just his “imagination” as previews said. As a character, Ichi is a lot different from Kiryu and I think that’s a good thing. He goes through a lot of shit, but he manages to stay positive and believes.
As for the map, I must say it was HUGE. Even for the demo, I could only explore a mere fraction of what it had to offer and despite Nagoshi saying it won’t be an accurate representation, as someone who lives in Yokohama, it does feel a lot like the real Yokohama. The area I was exploring felt a lot like Hinodecho as I recognized the Keisei line trains and the rivers you cross there along with soaplands and bars.
