General RGG Discussion

The timing window varies from game to game. I felt it was tighter in 1&2 (PS2) compared to 3-5 myself, as I got good at doing it in the later games. 5 practically forces you to use it against Jo Amon unless you want a tortuous battle! 6 and to a lesser extent Kiwami 2 then made the timing window super tight, while also reducing damage and pushback, so it was way less useful to use compared to previous games. Then Judge Eyes fixed that and made it super powerful with a better timing window again.

Makes me wonder if/how 7 will handle it. Its an iconic move, would be a shame for it to be cut.

Well...if you don't want a massive spoiler then maybe you shouldn't watch this...I'll give you all forewarning.

BTW, that demo? It's up for Download on the Japanese store :D Have fun, y'all. Downloading now! This will take the edge off of waiting for Shenmue III.

They just couldn't leave him in retirement now could they? He's baaaaaacccccck! Kind of disapointed they didn't leave it as a secret and blew their wad in this trailer....would have been an awesome reveal in the full game if they had kept it secret. Here's hoping he's just an Amon style boss or mentor....I really kind of was hoping they'd go the entire game without bringing him back...but at the same time, it's Kiryu-Chan. It's hard not to be happy to see him again.

Internet died midstream so it got split into two different streams

Thoughts after playing the demo?

I absolutely love it! Such a breath of fresh air while feeling VERY familiar. It's very much a turn based RPG so I don't know how that's gonna go for the fans of the original combat who aren't into turn based RPGs...but for me? I loved everything about this!

I'm surprised how much they put into the demo actually. 5 Side Stories and a handful of the new mini games. I only played one of the side stories involving an old man looking for a birthday gift for a kid. But I will do the rest tomorrow.

Went to the Cinema and tried that out. That mini game was quite a lot of fun. Also, surprised Dragon Kart is in this demo. Did not expect that at all.

I didn't dig into the job system all that much...I'll play it again tomorrow night and play around more with that. But from what I saw, it looks cool. Also, I couldn't find a revive item. Maybe there is one in that drug store but I couldn't find a revive option for fallen party members.

I got two hours out of this demo and I didn't even see every side story it had to offer.

But yeah, overall I'm digging this. This feels good! This feels like a much needed change of pace. I'm in! I was already in but I'm now even more in than I was before! They did good!

Yeah... Don't know why he's back and I hope to GOD he never becomes playable again...

Just leave him be.

Yeah, I know. I have to wonder if they brought him back as a panic reaction to the Turn Based RPG change-up?...maybe they weren't sure how that would be received so they threw him in just in case.

So long as they don't feel tempted to retcon Y6's ending (which I have a bad feeling they will based on the negative reaction to Y6 in Japan) then I'll be fine with him being here. If he is here as a secret boss or a mentor or even just a summon attack then I'll be happy. It really just depends on what they do with him and how big his role actually is in Y7...but I really hope they don't feel the need to retcon his ending. Otherwise it will completely lose all meaning as to why he did what he did.

On the one hand, I wish they didn't but on the other, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happy to see him show up as well. Just depends on what they do with him.

Played the demo for a few hours, focusing on combat since that's the biggest change. Copy/pasting thoughts from elsewhere:

So, demo thoughts...

First off you start off at level 11 for each character, job class level 4. Areas are ranked on encounter difficulty. The area you start in is 1 star. Enemies go down quick, you can use the default attacks (ones that don't use SP) and they go down in 2 hits at most (normally 1 hit) from Adachi and Ichiban who have more weight behind their attacks. If you use SP attacks? Instant KO.

Speaking of enemy encounters. You can see the enemies miles away. And they are ultra passive in terms of starting fights. You have to run right up to them before a fight starts, they won't do that to you. So anyone worried about this needn't worry.

There's quite a bit to combat in terms of different attacks dealing different afflictions, hitting multiple people etc. You can block enemy attacks as noted above. Between that and the SP QTEs it actually feels more like Paper Mario than anything else. If you hit an enemy hard enough (not very hard) they'll fall over. I think? you deal more damage to a downed enemy, so if a second character attacks an enemy on the ground, they take even more damage. Also, if allies are close to enemies on the ground, they auto attack them for free followups - this is super easy to do especially against the last enemy standing.

Job swapping I've just unlocked but not really played around with yet, I think you gotta be using a job to level it up so some of a grind will exist there in the beginning, but they seem to level up quick.

Armor and accessories work more like traditional RPGs now - so you equip different stuff to different parts of your body etc. for stat boosts. Likewise items from convenience stores feel more useful due to the boosts they give (HP, SP, afflictions etc.)

This one seems surprising, but voiced side stories might be back? At least, the one I did so far was. So good news for those who wanted that.

Hitting people into oncoming traffic won't get old anytime soon.

Like Persona/Pokemon and I'm sure 100s of other RPGs, different classes and attacks deal different levels of damage, so if you know an enemy weakness you can take them down even faster.

You can find health chests/spots in the (gigantic) map which gives you your health back for free. These spots dont seem to disappear so that's cool.

Game looks real nice so far, Im sure It'll look better at night time though.

Enemies can call for backup. Guess they finally remembered enemies could do this in Yakuza 5!

So yeah, I still expect a polarising opinion on this one. My personal fears of the game being super slow are gone, as combat is way snappier than expected (keeping traditional Yakuza flash while they are at it) and I love the presentation and what I've played so far. That said, its still a turn based RPG, even with some action elements sprinkled in so no doubt people will be disappointed by that. Me though? Time to start prepping for that 100% run!

OK, played more. Loving this combat system, each new area has its own quirks I guess? Reached a more populated (environment wise) area - a shopping street with bikes, cones, signs etc. and doing environmental attacks just happens naturally. If your character is running toward an enemy and one of these obstacles are in the way they'll hit them to hit the items into the enemy for bonus damage. Hitting grounded enemies does indeed yield critical damage.

Fighting slightly more powerful enemies means you level your job up insanely fast. Cap seems to be set at 5 in the demo/early game but I'd imagine that can be easily raised. You unlock really awesome powerful moves really early on. Oh, and those snazzy cutscenes you see for summons and more powerful heat moves? Skippable, I know some people were concerned they weren't.

Game seriously looks gorgeous, really I can't stress that enough. These characters look great.

Job switching is super fun. And when you are in a class that an enemy is weak against, its marked on your hud when selecting an enemy to attack, which is super useful.

Mini games are great fun, the trash pickup is hilarious, power drifting while grabbing junk that peopke drop feels like a Sega game all right!

Side stories have voiced intros/outros but anything in between is text. Best of both worlds for me personally.

There are some hilarious enemy types here. The swimwear dudes are tougher to counter because they have hilariously weird animations. I also got attacked by trashbags... that's right. Trashbags with human limbs. Dragon Quest Slimes eat your heart out.

So yeah, I absolutely can't wait to play the full game. Combat feels even snappier the more I play and I'd imagine difficulty options will exist to make it easier/harder based on your preference.

Ok, done with the demo. Did a bit of everything. There's plenty of shops to buy more gear, and honestly I feel the only thing limiting myself from getting even stronger was lack of money to buy everything. Once people figure out how to make money...

Grabbed a badass Sword for Ichiban and I was one shotting most enemies. Leveled up each job class to 5 and got all the exclusive moves unlocked (again, those mainly 1 shot enemies). Some really awesome moves there to be had for sure.

Karaoke rocks, as expected. Go Karting is hilarious fun and easy to pick up, cinema is a really cool mini game that's harder than I expected, took a couple of tries to nail it down but its great once you get the hang of it.

So yeah, that's me done until release, I'm sold on the game. Combat is easy to pick up and play but has a nice layer of depth with just what you can unlock and use. Side stories are pretty hilarious even with just the few that are included in the demo so that's a good sign. Oh, and Auto mode just makes the combat go along super quick if you don't want to deal with menu's, so that's cool. I prefer more control though.

So you can job switch on the fly? I didn’t play around with the job system to in my first play through earlier. I was trying to steer clear of main objectives thinking it would end the demo. But didn’t realise until near ending my stream that I should have done the first main quest line as it would have opened up the job system. So I haven’t had much of a chance to play around with it, but based on what you wrote, you can switch on the fly?

No, job switching must be done via the job center (I checked). I guess it makes sense to pair characters with different jobs to have a variety to be on the safe side. Though its not like enemies are strong enough that you'll be screwed if you pick a less than ideal choice.

A couple of other notes - food combos are back, you have to figure them out yourself. I assume they give you great boosts if you eat certain foods together?

The city has different NPC numbers depending on the area, the homeless areas have very few NPCs but shopping streets have quite a few. Its a nice little touch.

The game (graphically) looks insanely sharp. I mean, maybe its just the PS4 remasters I've been playing recently being a gen behind graphically but damn does the game look insanely clean. Character models and city buildings look fantastic.

I hope Mister KK is just a "lets have the whole new group fight him but hes so badass that nobody has a chance"
fanservice scene. I really dont need more plot, we have more than enough.

I see...I was thinking there might have been a way like style switching on the fly in Yakuza 0 and Judgment or even Persona switching in Persona. Oh well, not a big deal.

I'm with you all the way by the way. I loved what I played of it. The combat feels fresh while still feeling incredibly familiar. I love the Heat attacks (or SP/MP attacks)...I love how gonzo some of them are.

Also the game feels surprisingly good as an RPG...the speed is still there and doesn't skip a beat, but at the same time...it allows for some measure of challenge that we haven't really seen from a Yakuza game in quite a while.

I have no idea if the experiment will pan out for them upon release in terms of fans embracing it...but this fan was incredibly happy with what he played.

Haven't really looked around for other reactions though...but yeah, I loved what I played of the demo. Feels so good.

Discord reaction seems fairly positive from what I've read so far, no idea outside of that though. I just needed the demo to push me over the edge as I was still unsure going by the combat shown previously, but having had a few hours to dive into it? Love it, washed away my fears as assuming there is difficulty settings as a worst case scenario, I should be find if any late game difficulty hike occurs. But it seems fairly kind on leveling and gear so far (so many different places to get gear in just the demo area).

In terms of future games... I definitely want this game doing well, I love the concept and want the team to get at least a modest success from it because it has real effort put into everything, not like a cheap sequel/spinoff that just changes the combat - we get a brand new area, almost all new cast etc. and it definitely feels like its own thing. So maybe have both brawling and RPG games in the future? Either way I can't wait to get this one in January for sure.

Any news about releasing Yakuza 3 on steam?

Nah, they are also not answering any questions about Steam versions, its all about Playstation.
Maybe they will release the whole digital package with Yakuza 3-5 on Steam after they released the physical PS4 package
in February 2020. And they still have to announce Steam versions for Fist of the North Star, Yakuza 6 and Judgment ...
and Yakuza 7 is coming too. Thats a lot of content.

I imagine they will all come to Steam probably some time next year after the Remastered Collection (physical) drops on PS4.

That's a lot of games to port over and this stuff takes time after all.

2020 will be tough man. I still have Death Stranding here, waiting for Shenmue 3, then all of Yakuza 3-5 starting in February because i ordered the physical edition, but then there will be Nioh 2 and FF7 Remake in March, i'm also waiting for Deadly Premonition 2 and then probably Yakuza 7 somewhere in the summer ... how can i finish all of that
