General RGG Discussion

WELP just accidentally spoiled myself on Y6 for something major by reading the comments here.
Fuck me right in the ass (but please don't actually). I still have 3 games to go plus steam wait time, so I'd like to think I'd forget by the time I start Y6. But I probably won't considering the subject matter.

Yakuza 7 is top of my list next year, the demo helped push it up there. Glad to see the majority of people who played the demo seem far more excited for the game, alongside the Shenmue 3 hype its been a great day!

I just spent another three hours with the demo just then. Cleared out all side stories and played around with the Job System a little more. Also found the Mahjong Parlor and played a game of that.

Again, I really like what I played of this. This definitely took the edge off of waiting for Shenmue III. I'm in love with the turn based RPG system. Kicking people out in front of on-coming traffic is stupidly hilarious to me. I love some of the major heat moves. The Summons really make me wonder how crazy they'll go with that shit and who they'll add via DLC?....I can definitely see them adding a Majima Summon via DLC at some point for the simple fan service of it (unless he shows up in the plot)...among others.

Is it just me or is there a Paper Mario defence type system in play? As in hit X just before the enemy connects to get a perfect guard? I felt like there was one in play as I was timing the X button with some of their connecting blows.

Yeah, I'm really digging this. It's a ton of fun and it has sky rocketed to becoming my most anticipated game of next year (by far)...I can't wait to see more of the job system and other such goodies this game has in store for us.

For someone who was getting a little fatigued with the formula (I was admittedly a little fatigued with Judgment) I feel like this is a damn nice refresher that the series really was in need of. I'm super impressed by the fact that it still feels like a Yakuza game but still feels completely fresh and new. Goes to show this team really can branch out if you let them.

Because you know they themselves had to have been getting tired with the same formula over and over...it goes to show that if you let this team fly, they really can branch out.

The only thing that is a bit weird ... at least for me, is how inconsistent the voice acting is.
In some games, or most of the old ones, only the main story has voice acting, everything else is text only.
Then you have Yakuza 6 where even the side missions have voice acting, Judgment used the text only thing again,
now Yakuza 7 has text only parts right at the beginning of the demo, then they have voices again in the next scene.
Then you start a side mission and the characters have voice acting but only for one part of this quest,
then its text only again. But at the same time Ichibans voice in his head has sound ...
I really dont understand their system

Voiced stuff is for:
Main story scenes, but not minor encounters or scenes.
Beginning and end of side stories, but not parts in the middle. I guess its trying to meet in the middle the people that wanted voiced side stories because reading is soooooooooooooooooooo hard. But hopefully that doesn't hurt the number of included side stories, the ones in the demo alone are excellent, so I want as many as possible, 70+ at least (5 had 70ish side stories, so that's the smallest number I'll accept!)

Is it just me or is there a Paper Mario defence type system in play? As in hit X just before the enemy connects to get a perfect guard? I felt like there was one in play as I was timing the X button with some of their connecting blows.
Yes it is. X just before an attack hits will do a defensive block and damage is reduced by half at least. Its a great little addition and adds a little more player engagement to attacks.

Yakuza games coming to Xbox, that was unexpected

Weirdly enough I've been expecting it for a while. Especially once they started doing the PC ports. The PC ports have Xbox UI layouts (due to the Xbox One controller support on PC) so kind of makes sense to port over to Xbox One since most of the work is done. The age of everything being built on x86 architecture. So much easier to port shit everywhere.

But yeah, nice treat for Xbox owners. Nice to see Sega continuing to go full in. Nice to see support for the series in the West ever growing. Now if only we can get Ishin and Kenzan ;) I imagine this is a "In the West" only deal since Xbox might as well be close to a dead brand in Japan.

Makes me wonder if they'd be interested in porting Yakuza 0 over to Switch...or if the Wii U flopped ports was enough to turn them away from Nintendo for good? I could handle Yakuza on the go.

I was thinking about it while playing Yakuza 7 on PS4 last night. Man, I'd love to see a PC port of that Day 1...I know it won't happen Day 1...but man, I would love to see one. Dragon Engine at 60FPS is a sight in Kiwami 2.

Hopefully the series grows with these ports. I actually don't even own an Xbox One now (my brothers conked out so he has mine now) but I'll definitely get an X or Scarlet sometime just for the GP stuff and Capcom/Sega BC games.

Its awesome that Sega has a lot of faith for Yakuza now. I mean just look how many Ryu Ga Gotoku products
we got in the west since 2017 and there is still more. I'm always happy about the success of other IPs,
the market would be super boring with just GTA, Assassins Creed and Fifa. There is so much more stuff
that we dont know because it doesnt get translated.

I just hope that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio will keep producing japanese games with a japanese mindset.
I'm a tiny little bit afraid that there will be a point in the future
where the west totally surpasses the sales numbers of everything else
and then they are trying to push the franchise a little more into western standards, to make it even more successful
and thats not what i want.
I want to play a translated japanese game made by japanese people,
not a game made by japanese people but for a western audience.

Not that there is any hardcore evidence for that
but all the comments about Kenzan and Ishin for the west and sometimes the studio members are saying something like
"yeah we could do it", but then Sega comments something like "no, there are no plans ... "
I hope that Sega US or whatever doesnt tell Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio in the future that they cant do XYZ
because that would be bad for a release in the west. Like "we cant do this minigame anymore
because our new number one sales number region dislikes this content". Stuff like this.
Not that this will happen, i just wanted to talk about it.

Based on the Yakuza 7 demo? I don't think we have to worry too much...it's still as Japanese as they come. :D

Maybe they realize that is part of the success though. As in it's refreshing to play an open world game that reflects an entirely different culture that we don't see in other open world games. Also, I think they learned from Binary Domain. Binary Domain was their attempt to make a more Western Focused game and it didn't exaxctly do well...I like Binary Domain quite a bit, but yeah, it didn't do well sales wise. I think to some degree Japanese developers went through this headache last gen. But most of them seem to be going back to what they do best and for the better.

So maybe they know where the appeal lies. If Yakuza 7 is anything to go by, they haven't missed a step. It's still as Japanese as they come. Also, even though the series is seeing success in the West...their real bread and butter is still the Asian market that made them.

So yeah, I don't think we have to worry too much about it losing its main draw. After seeing the "Man-Baby" summon in the Yakuza 7 demo...my only thought was "never change, Yakuza...never change. This is why I love you."

I think Yakuza 7 as a project is too fresh. I mean like way later, after Judgment is available on PC
and all 6 Yakuza games are on Xbox and Steam and all of it was a success.
A scenario where Sega sees that the potential for a western audience is bigger than ever before
and then they can go two different routs. 1) they think "okay, the people like it because its a japanese product,
dont change anything because thats what they want." or 2) they think "okay, the audience got bigger and bigger but we could probably attract even more players if we reduce the japanese style a little bit and maybe listen more to western critics."

Well Nagoshi and co. have stated in interviews that they do realise that their games are popular because of the fact that they are Japanese, and have no intention of changing that. Which is great to hear, as the last thing I want is that aspect changing, its one of the best aspects the series has.

Much as I love the Switch, I think the Wii U versions really scared them off, or convinced them it was a failed experiment. As for Yakuza 7, maybe if we're lucky we'll get a day 1 PC port for the west.

Heres a biting question, which of the many versions of recieve you is the best? Its narrow between recieve and slash you or receive and bite you, but bite you just had such a visceral hype speed to it with its synth its hard to chose

but at the same time, its hard to deny how hype slash you is, especially with its absolutely killer intro

Recieve You The Prototype from the PS2 Yakuza 1 is always going to be the best for me.

Yeah, i just hope that it stays that way. Toshihiro Nagoshi and Daisuke Sato are not 30 anymore.
I always see it more from the risky side when specific "niche" or "fan" IPs get too popular in new regions
because there is always the problem that the IP owners could feel the need to address a wider audience now
so they start tuning / tweaking some of the features / story / content. Of course there is also the possibility that they will do the opposite and make it even more niche / crazy / whatever ... there are examples for both ways.
It can be a risky path, so i hope they have a big plan for all of this
and keep doing what they are doing. I really dont want to see some american tourist in Japan in Yakuza 9
just because it could attract more players worldwide or deleted side content because people voted for it on Twitter in a survey.

Yeah, when/if that starts happening I'll be pissed off. Always annoys me elsewhere where I see people saying stuff like "set the next Yakuza in America". I mean, we have enough damn games set in Amerca already, and with so much of Asia still not touched on (imagine a China or Korea based game?) it'd be much better than having yet another damn Western gangster game. Fingers crossed that never happens though, I want the series to continue but not like that!

Shenmue 2 and Shenmue 3 ;)
Wait, what's this weeks stance on Yakuza and Shenmue comparisons? ;)

Sleeping Dogs is actually a really good Hong Kong/Crime based game as well, its actually one of my preferred open world games thanks to the atmosphere, combat and plot. Kinda wish we'd have gotten another...

But seriously, Shenmue is its own thing, I'd like a China/Korea hub town which focuses on Triads/Jingwoen Mafia etc. Or just keep up with doing more different districts in Japan, that works for me as well!
