General RGG Discussion

Hilariously, I've been speaking to someone else looking forward to it and both of us have seen people complaining how the game is basically "more of the same" - no, seriously, some people actually said this. Despite how much changes with the game some people really believe that!

Wow! I could understand that being thrown in Judgment's direction but 7? That demo was refreshing as all hell!

Is there a demo out? Only in Japanese? I don’t know how I’ve missed it.
You can find it on the Japan, Chinese or Hong Kong storefronts. HK storefront is in English so its the easiest to navigate for lazy ol' me. Though keep in mind the demo is completely in Japanese (or CHinese) depending the demo you choose. Its basically a combat/content demo, there's next to no story stuff in it but there's a good few hours worth of content if you want to play around with the new systems on offer.

People will just complain about anything sometimes I swear. Whether it be games being too much like previous ones, not enough like previous ones, or Nemesis having a nose in RE3 Remake. Who cares, I'll still play the crap out of them!

Yeah I saw that too (in regards to Nemesis)...gets a bit tiring after a while (maybe it's why I have a love-hate relationship with fandoms)...fandoms! Where everyone has the "correct" opinion on how things should really be done but deep down don't really know what they want! :D

I definitely know I'm in the minority, but there are a few I've run into.

Just a horribly-written character (the entire second half of 2 is a mess, writing-wise) and I still hate the fact that she's shoehorned to be a love interest, which completely eschews 1 and 0, in regards to Yumi (albeit 0 came out afterwards). So many out of character moments for Kiryu too, in the endgame, which pisses me off (thankfully, the later games all continue the character that was established in 1).

Anyways, not only did I write two essays in University where Kaoru was a focal point (seriously lol), I've written about it to death on the internet in the past 7 years, so I'll leave it at that! lol
FWIW it's worth I'm with you on 2's story (or at least Kiwami 2's) being a mess. I really have no idea what happened there, it was like a bad fan-fiction compared to what I saw in 0 and 1.

@Dietsoap I feel (of course, going on my knowledge of writing and plot conventions in texts, past and present, which partly I learned in University and partly I've experienced myself), is that Nagoshi had a fantastic plot and character introductions in the first game; with the many gameplay flaws of 1, the plot was just fantastic and still is.

Again no evidence, but I feel with 2, Nagoshi came up with characters and their motivations, then tasked Seishu (the crime writer brought in for the first game), to do MORE of the plot, characters and situations himself; can't remember where I read it, but he got more free reign on 2 than he did on 1.

The first half of the game is rock-solid, plot-wise; clear antagonists and situations, great setpieces and the characters are introduced quite well.

The second half, things fall apart; characters take a 180 in terms of behavior and motivations, the plot twists are all ridiculously over the top and BEYOND unbelievable (the series is full of ridiculous moments, but fake Kazuki gets shot in the head and doesn't die? WTF?). It says on Wikipedia they went for a more dramatic plot, but 3 is significantly more dramatic and it's done properly and realistically (hell, for the 90 millionth time lol, a similar situation was happening in Japan at that time as well, although no CIA involvement, of course).

For how stoic, intelligent, street smart and just overall genre-savvy Kiryu is as a character, when Kaoru gets hit by Takashima and he pulls a, "Kaoru!!" getting distracted and getting the gun (WHICH HE HAS STATED HE DOESN'T LIKE USING!!!!!!!! GRRRRR :mad::mad::mad::mad:) shot out of his hands, is just shoddy and not-nuanced writing and it still pisses me off.

That entire last chapter is deplorably-written and I felt that Seishu just didn't know what to write at that point... and when you don't know what to write, you just cobble a bunch of shit together, filled with shock and awe, which he did in spades.

But it didn't work; he was not asked back after that game and hasn't been involved since (thank God) and, IMO, the plots have been written and conceptualized brilliantly, (barring 4) from 3 and on.

TL;dr: Seishu screwed up on 2 because he didn't know what to write, so he threw in plot twists and made all the major players be completely opposite from how they were established to be.

So, I didn't realise but its Yakuza's birthday in Japan tomorrow (well, for them its already tomorrow...)
The series is now 14 years old, meaning its the 15th anniversary next year. You gotta wonder, are we getting something special for that? Maybe it'll be announced next year but released in 2021 what with 7 getting released in January but I'm kinda hoping we get something special. But I have no idea what it could possibly be!

One thing I'm thinking may happen (and am throwing out there now) is Kenzan Kiwami. Its already been mentioned briefly, but also if you remember we've gotten two Samurai Yakuza games - both at the START of the next console generation. And what also happens next year? PS5! I'd personally rather a brand new samurai game than a remake to one I already have but hey not like I'd pass it up either!

I'm in the mindset now that we will never see Kenzan or Ishin in the west.
I know that there were comments about Kenzan Kiwami but just 3 or 4 weeks later
Daisuke Sato personally commented that Sega has no plans for these two games in the west
and that was the last thing we heard about that.
It almost seemed like there were internal discussions about it and then Sega said no
so Sato had to backtrack.

And even if there would be a Kenzan Kiwami or a completely new samurai spin off
i doubt that they would bring it to the west. I dont know why but Sega never comments on any of these requests,
they choose to ignore it.
They have Ishin, a game that still looks totally acceptable and is running with 60 fps on the PS4
but for whatever reason they still dont want to translate it.
There are complete fan translations into german on Youtube from one single person who did it for free ...
I have no idea what Segas problem or thoughts are but for whatever reason it seems like they have no trust
in the samurai series for the western market. They only commented once
and that was "we dont know if people in the west like samurai themes ..."

So maybe there will be a samurai spin off for PS4 and PS5 but my guess is that it will be for asian territories only
and we will never hear anything about the original Kenzan or Ishin ever again. Thats what i think.
The Yakuza fan community is begging Sega for ages and nothing happened, the hype about is almost gone,
there will be no new push. So if Sega is waiting for more fan requests ... they wont get them. They waited way too long.

Kenzan ain't happening, I'll be shocked if they don't bring Ishin over though, especially with the ps5 basically being confirmed to be backward compatible and the wide selection of stuff to translate being so narrowed down that we are basically caught up on the franchise now.

Who knows. I mean, its at least not the most unbelieveable thing anymore, the series was basically dead this time last gen, now we have almost every Yakuza game in English. So that's not a bad turn of events!

Ishin would make sense...considering Sekiro and the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima. You think they would be all over it and translating Ishin to capitalize on both the recent Yakuza success as of late and those games too. But who knows if it will come. I mean next year you have the HD remastered collection and then Yakuza: Like a Dragon coming out...so I wonder if they'll want to flood the market?

I'm still curious as to when they will show off an English Trailer and Date for Yakuza 7...maybe this weeks State of Play? Or the VGA's? I wonder if they'll try doing a dub again for Yakuza 7 considering Judgment? Knowing that Kiryu is in Yakuza 7, would be VERY interesting to hear a modern day English dub for Kiryu ;) (in comparison to the old PS2 dub)

But I still believe Ishin will come at some point.

Kenzan Kiwami would be cool...or even just a third samurai based Yakuza game in the Dragon Engine alone would be cool to see.

Now that all of these games are on PS4, I kind of want to see one big box set released. Like if Sega released a premium box set of all 6 games featuring Kiryu, I would totally buy it. Surprised they haven't done it already. Would make sense for a 15th anniversary type thing. Yakuza: The Dragon of Dojima Collection. (or something like that)

Kenzan Kiwami would be cool though. I'd love to see that era in the Dragon Engine for sure.

The other cool idea would be a Yakuza game set in the sixties or seventies featuring Kazama as the protag. I would be all over something like that. We've seen Kamurocho in the 00's, 90's and 80s but what does Kamurocho look like in the 70s or 60s? Also, you could tell a compelling story with Kazama and do some interesting things with that era. Give me a Kinji Fukasaku vibed Yakuza game set in that time period. I would be all over it.

It would be funny if they would create a samurai spin off with turn based sword fights,
with different preset stances like in Nioh (low stance: very fast, lot of combos, low damage.
mid stance: normal speed, normal damage, no combos. high stance: very slow, big damage, big combos)
i imagine a small Shenmue QTE or perfect timed button press at the end to boost the damage :grinning:
and then some perfect counter / parry system like in Sekiro when you are being attacked
and then you can immediately counter attack.
(enemies have a chance to do the same)
And not hyper action style, more slowly and brutal, like in oldschool samurai movies.
Just single short attacks that do a lot of damage.
But the story and cutscene style is still normal Yakuza. I would love something like that.

Sega better not do some sort of Yakuza box set... I'm too weak to not buy that! I already have two Mega Man collections like that on their way this month, and Yakuza would totally have me buying something like that as well!

I also wonder when we'll get more Yakuza 7 English news. Guess once 5 is out next year? And I can't wait to see what the VA is like for Kiryu. Its going to be a glorious disaster no matter how you look at it. Unless his Japanese VA speaks fluent enough English.

No news about steam release right?
Nothing yet for some reason. I'd thought we'd have at least have an idea when 3-5 would be coming by now to be honest. They really are taking their time...

They are probably waiting for the physical PS4 box in February and then its 3-6 months until its on Steam
or they will announce Judgment for Steam first and then Yakuza 3-5 a couple of months later ...
or maybe Fist of the North Star first ...

Probably next year once they put out the physical release of the Yakuza collection on PS4.

This shit takes time, I guess...they only just got around to porting Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Kiwami 2 to Xbox One so give them some time, I guess. Wasn't 6 supposed to be rumoured to be coming to PC as well?

I could see them maybe just dumping them one by one on Steam throughout the remainder of next year as they come.

The beautiful thing about x86 hardware....isn't as painful to port between console and PC anymore since everything console wise is now just off the shelf PC parts. So yeah, I'd imagine next year we'll start seeing the rest of them show up on PC as well.

I was thinking I might go through Yakuza 3 - 4 - 5 and 6 again before 7 comes out in Jan. I'm already 8 of 12 chapters into Y3 as is...and I know I'm probably gonna move on to Y4 around the Christmas break...probably won't get time to do them all though...not unless I just through the story and ignore the side stuff of each game, I guess.
