General RGG Discussion

6 was leaked via a financial report I think. But then they went with Kiwami 2 which honestly makes more sense. So chances are we'll get 3-5 before 6 just to release them in order. And yeah, shared architecture has been a boon (and should continue to be a boon) for these releases. Should mean we get easy PC ports and BC for next gen consoles. Which is ace.

I tried the Yakuza 7 demo myself today, i downloaded it with my Hongkong account
because its easier to navigate through the PSN menu with english text.
But of course the demo then is still in chinese or japanese, so i couldnt read anything.
Positive things first, i think the fighting is totally fine. It isnt even that different compared to the classic games,
i think the speed of the battles is pretty much the same once you know the menues
and you can just walk past battles if you dont want to fight, you dont even have to run away.

Maybe the spawn rate for enemies is a bit high because once you defeated a group of like 5 people,
there is already the next group of 5 people in front of you. But since you dont have to fight them if you dont want to ...
To make it short, i dont think that the new fighting mechanics will be a problem for me. I got the hang of it after 3-5 minutes.
The rest seemed good or okay, i didnt see any framerate problems at all on PS4 Pro,
no hiccups or stuttering and no fps drops.

The only negative thing, i mean not really negative, just a bit underwhelming
was the amount of NPCs on the streets and the overall detail quality in the streets.
It looked pretty empty sometimes and there were some areas where you couldnt discover anything.
Just empty flat sidewalks with one texture, next to boring houses with one texture. No signs, no plants, no animals,
no details like laundry or trash, nothing.
It looked a little lazy compared to the level of detail in Kamurocho for example.
I know that not every japanese street looks super shiny, colorful and awesome
but it still can have lots of small details to make it look real and interesting.
And i think that was missing in some parts of this demo area.

I met with a friend while in Tokyo last night and turns out that he was the motion capture actor for KAZUMA KIRYU IN ALMOST ALL OF THE YAKUZA GAMES.

His name is Masanori Mimoto and he’s an actor and stuntman. He frequently collaborates with U’Den Flame Works, an incredible film action design team in Tokyo. We originally met last month when they came to New York to screen their latest film. The film’s director, Kensuke Sonomura, casually mentioned that Masanori portrayed Kiryu when I told him that I was a Yakuza fan and how crazy it was walking around in Kabukicho. Anyways, small fucking world.

Very nice!

That's my favourite thing about Tokyo. You never know who you might randomly bump into when you're out at night.

A year back, I was hanging out in the Golden Gai drinking...randomly ran into an environmental artist who worked for Guerilla games (he was in Tokyo at the time working on Death Stranding)

NPC spawn rate varies depending on the street your on if you can believe that. Some run down streets/hobo areas will have few NPCs walking around. Go to one of the busier shopping streets and NPCs show up in abundance. Likewise the nicer shopping streets look better/shinier than certain other run down areas. Granted overall I don't think it looks quite as good as Kamuro, but there's some stunning detail there.

Replaying 3 and 4, it definitely feels like there used to be more NPCs in general, and now as environmental detail goes up there has to be a trade off. Not a huge deal, like something between GTA4 and 5, just miss being able to knock down 50+ people on a single street.

Well, in 3 and 4 if you waited around in one spot you'd be swamped with NPCs, it'd be hilarious at certain points where they just all filter in. But then if you turned the camera they disappeared when they weren't visible. 5 was a bit different as NPCs were more resilient to being knocked down, felt like they got in the way more so there were less of them around... but still plenty from what I remember. Its been a while since I've played a newer Yakuza title but yeah, definitely feels like they reduce the NPC count in newer games, perhaps to compensate with the engine. But again, they do appear after a while, just in smaller numbers. Funnily its one of the same issues I had with the second half of Shenmue 3... Shenmue 2 really spoiled me with how dense the crowds in any given area were!

They showed new classes / jobs for Yakuza 7.
Street musician, female hostess, riot officer, female card dealer, kitchen chef, some kind of monk, female domina, rockstar,
some kind of crazy Yakuza fighter girl ? ...
All with their own buffs, debuffs, AOE, special and super attacks

The jobs/classes is probably what interests me most. Guess I’m just a sucker for it whether it’s this or any of the Final Fantasy games that have it(think 5 and 10-2?). The different styles introduced in some of the more recent games are nice but not quite the same.

The jobs shown off look hilarious, worth pointing out that two of them (Demon and Boss lady) are paid DLC. And because Boss Lady looks amazing I must buy it - I love the costume design on the class, and the weapons/skills look hilarious. As for Demon? Having Ichiban cosplay what looks like a member of KISS is reason enough for me - imagine having the KISS, Hippy soft rocker/John Lennon, Idol and Dancer classes as a team!

60 of 119 sidequests done in Yakuza 3. I'm back in Okinawa at Chapter 10. I might power through and finish the rest of the story and leave the rest of the side stuff for clean up in Premium mode. I know I'm probably not gonna platinum it or go for 100% (although you never know -- but I've heard the mini game trophy is kinda bullshit in Y3). I kinda forgot how much I liked Yakuza 3. But I do want to try and move on to Yakuza 4 so maybe I'll finish up the story and move on.

But it's been nice revisiting Y3 none the less...still remains one of my favorties in the series.

Btw why wasnt Judgment anywhere at the Game Awards? I mean 2019 wasnt a really huuuuuge year for games,
it was just okay. And Judgment had pretty good reviews, in no way worse than Death Stranding or Gears 5 for example.
But Judgment wasnt nominated anywhere. I mean not even mentioned,
it wasnt even in the pre show list on the website where fans were able to vote ... i think thats pretty harsh.

I really haven’t paid much attention to other Yakuza games in regards to getting awards but I get the feeling the series is just niche enough to get ignored by big wigs in journalism, even with efforts made to make the series more modern in design.

It WAS a 2018 release, after all... but if its region-specific, it would count for 2019 for NA.

IIRC it was a pre-show nominee with the rapid fire awards before Geoff began the official show?

I still feel that the series is underground enough to get ignored. I mean, I'd have had it at least a nominee for narrative, I'd argue its got a damn fine story. But its also that kind of quirky Japanese game that'd only get a nod if it were a pure RPG (for a nom in the RPG genre award). Ironically next year might be a stronger year for that, what with Yakuza 7 and all, but even at this point its either going to be FFVII, or somehow Cyberpunk (because despite not really looking like an RPG, I bet it gets nominated as an RPG because choices and stats...)

Mini game master is definitely a toughie in this one, while 5 asks more of you in terms of mini game total, 3 asks more skill of you in its smaller number of mini games. Its probably my second proudest trophy I've ever unlocked in a game, I was legit pleased to manage that!

Am i the only one that still sometimes thinks that the old character models looked better than the new ones?
Especially the females. I dont know what it is, but they look like they are made of plasticine in the new engine.
Its missing some details or shadows or shading, i dont know. They look too much like dolls or characters from The Sims.
They look out of place, they dont look like real people. Most of the male models are fine.

Of course the character models in the old engine didnt look better in terms of resolution or whatever,
but they dont look out of place. And i'm not talking about the random characters in the streets or shops
but the characters that are somewhat important / present in cutscenes and dialogues.
What do you think?

I don’t know...I almost think that maybe the people making the models really just specialize in beefy shirtless men. :p Personally I’ve found a ton of the female models in each of the games to look a bit off, usually the eyes. Though a common thing in general, for a lot of games, is getting long hair to work right, or else find a way to just make everyone have short hairstyles.

Some are better, some are worse; the chick in the second pic for example, is better than almost any of the earlier ones.

Makoto doesn't look good lol, in comparison to the other ones. Could just be a bad shot of her too.

Haruka looks PHENOMENAL, Oryo looks fantastic too. Marina Shiraishi <3, of all the JAV actresses they got, I feel she's the most bang on, from 0.

It's hit and miss; some are better, some are worse.
