General RGG Discussion

I think i like the older ones more (in the example pictures above) because they have this fake photo realism style
like LA Noire or even Mafia 1.
You know, where real faces are kind of "glued" onto the head of the character model.
You can see all of these little shadows and shades and it looks like things like the eyelids have more details.
In the new engine the lighting and colors make it look like anime characters, its a little bit to flat and smooth.
The girl in the second Yakuza 7 pic looks good but she doesnt look real / realistic to me when i compare her
to the guy sitting next to her. The guy looks real.
The girls in the Ishin pictures look more real / realistic to me than any of the girls in the Judgment or Yakuza 7 pictures.
Maybe its just a lighting thing, i dont know.

Otose looks like a typical RGG NPC, but Oryo REALLY stands out; you can tell they spent a bit more time modeling her.

Oryo annoyed the fuck out of me in Ishin. I have no real input in this conversation, just wanted to put that out there, couldn't stand her at all, was actively hoping history would be rewritten and she'd have gotten Kashiwagi'd (not sure how that'd work since helicopters weren't all that common back in the day)...

Oh, and Yumi's Kiwami character model has hulk hands. I can't look at her the same way again, she could have literally crushed Jingu in the palm of her hand!

Shenmue III somewhat feels like the PSP Kurohyo games. You can level up Ryo’s health and martial arts abilities, but the way Kurohyo does it is semi-different. Also, Tatsuya can do a variety of part-time work for money as does Ryo. As for wood chopping, Ishin did it first lol.

Well, I finished replaying Yakuza 4...did all the side quests but not much else outside the main story. I might have defeated Amon in 6 but don’t have the patience to deal with cheap stuff here. Last boss is cheap too but not this bad.

Originally planned on playing Judgement or finishing 0 or Kiwami but I think I might actually just take a break from the series until 5 comes. Going through 3 and 4 again at the same time has pretty much got me burnt out.

She annoyed me as well... TO DEATH

But putting her model in perspective there, they did a phenomenal job.

Still to this day, aside from the Dragon Engine games, no Yakuza title hit me as hard (on the PS3, I played) graphics-wise, as walking around Tosa that first few moments of gameplay; I knew then and there that Ishin! would be a BEAUTIFUL game.

And it was, in every aspect :D

Play Ishin on the PS4, that extra IQ and FPS boost is glorious. Late PS3 gen Yakuza character models blow me away - 5 and up basically - Yakuza 5 Kiryu is fantastic, Ishin looks sublime in pretty much every way, and 0 definitely does the "actors as characters" best with Dojima's crew. Dragon engine wise, Kitano is awesome, Yagami's actor is amazing and I really like how Kiryu looks as well (that wonderful... hair?)

Both engines have their ups and downs but I do love the style they go for - gritty, yet strangely colourful in places (the neon lights, blue skies in certain cities etc.)
Shenmue does similar - its stylised "realistic" style but with blue skies and gorgeous environments ooze atmosphere while other open world games just feel dead.

I know this has a separate thread, but I just beat Judgement today and the story might be my favorite out of everything the studio has done. The characters, even the supporting cast, are all great and memorable. I’ll admit I kind of got frustrated with the story when it started getting convoluted in the middle, but the finale wrapped up everything beautifully and was incredibly satisfying. For me, Judgment as an overall package almost outshines the Yakuza games.

Judge Eyes had an excellent story and characters. The finale especially was well done and when you have all the characters band together in the finale it felt earned, and brought on some epic moments. I loved how they cut in some shots from the flashback into the finale as well, its definitely one of my favourites in the wider Yakuza series no doubt.

Im interested in seeing what they do next year for the series. 7 will be out in less than a month so we should definitely get some sort of TGS announcement, plus I hope they do something for its 15th anniversary and PS5 console launch (I will accept PS5 patches/ports of Dragon Engine games that increase performance, but would prefer a new game!)

Sega has said they’ll continue to support the series on PS4 a little while longer. Yakuza started out towards the end of the PS2 and 0, Kiwami, and Ishin were on PS3 in Japan

The last three were crossgen, same thing I'm hoping for the series starting next year as well, the extra power would help the Dragon Engine run better, so that's reason enough to do it. And while I don't really see the need for more remasters of the series so far, patches to get 6, Judge Eyes, Kiwami 2 and 7 running better on newer hardware would be wonderful. Judge Eyes especially has some performance and texture streaming issues that would benefit greatly from the SSD.

Since I don't see them changing engines, I can see them keep releasing PS4 ports (no reason no to) but imagine Yakuza 8 on the PS5, higher res, looking nicer, 60FPS with no draw distance/pop in issues. It'd be amazing.

Was tempted to just leave my post with the above image, its perfect. But here's more info on Moes Tavern:

Unlike New Serena in past games, Ichiban's favourite bar in this game actually has you doing more interactions - from special party centric side stories, Karaoke (new songs, can't wait to hear them!), listening to music you buy/find in the game world (you could purchase some of 0s disco dance songs in the demo, no doubt for this reason) and a couple of other small bits and bobs.

Seems like this has the potential to be one of the Yakuza games with the longest playtime
if you want to experience and see everything.
(i mean its not like other Yakuza games or Spin Offs were too short, but it sounds like Yakuza 7 will have even more content)

You can also talk to your friends relaxing at the bar, and sometimes events called “Bond Dramas” will occur where you can learn more about their personal lives.

So....Social Links then :D No real big surprise considering the friends meter in previous games...they've been headed down this path for a while now.

Its definitely looking that way. They've talked about how long the game would be in the past, and with how we get two full cities at least (I've still been seeing rumblings about Sotenbori popping up) as long as the content is there, its gonna take a long time to complete/100% for sure. And personally, I can't wait!

Man, this is really crazy. There is this german guy on Youtube who lived in Japan for a couple of years
and he studied japanese history or i dont know what and he played Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin
and translated everything on the fly into german while playing it. Like everything.
All of the dialogues, all of the signs in the streets, text boxes, names,
food descriptions, he knows which guns and shops would be realistic for that time
and he even knows all of the real history, the real historical people, so he can immediately tell what Ruy Ga Gotoku changed.
And its not even bad or clunky, he reads it completely smooth and it all makes sense.
Its almost a history lesson + Yakuza let's play all in one. 51 parts, each about 40 minutes long.
And he just made it as a hobby because he likes it. The videos only have about 200-500 clicks each.
Thats crazy.

Playing Kiwami and I gotta say the bowling is more fun than the actual game. I can easily bowl for hours in this game.

More info on Yakuza 7:

Still reading it through at the moment, but hey we finally get solid confirmation on the cities in the game:

Ijincho (Yokohama) is the main city in the game, as we knew.

Kamurocho (Tokyo) will also feature in the game, we know already its part of the first two chapters (the flashback ones before Ichiban gets shot and dumped in Ijincho) but judging by the long story trailer we'll be back later in the game.

Sotenbori (Osaka) has been (re)confirmed to be in the game as well. Real question there is are they going to model the part and south street like 5 (and 0) include or not, as Kiwami 2 just took 2's map instead of 5's. I'm interested to see just to what extent this will feature in the plot since we already have two absolutely massive cities to explore. Maybe an end game segment since one of the big bads are the Omi after all (and this is their home turf).
