General RGG Discussion

It's written so damn well and the plot could've easily been one that falls off the rails or becomes ridiculous, but it keeps its realism the whole way and when there is the, "big," reveal about a plot point later on, if you know Japanese attitude, culture and pride, it will be pure awesomeness.

But if you don't know how the country is, you may think it's lame like half of the world did, when they got to that point.

Also, Takeshi Kitano's character is easily one of the three best (if not THE best) one-off characters in the series. Sit back and reflect about all you witnessed/learned about him after the game and he was written brilliantly.

Doesn't hurt that the guy playing him is an absolute legend.

Still not figured out all the names because it is going so fast, but i do like Nagumo(?),m he reminds me of Goro haha

I am somewhat familiar and sympathetic to Japanese culture, so it shouldn't be lost on me. Also, I ended up stopping at the beginning of chapter 5 after a ~2hour session.

Are there really no different difficulty levels in Yakuza 7?
I would have started it in hard mode because it seemed a little easy in the demo.

I can’t see anything in the settings nor did it pop up with an option to change difficulty at the beginning so I assume it’s one set difficulty for all.

Maybe they’ll add an extra hard mode in at a later date (as some games tend to do) but yeah, looks like one set difficulty for all.

More Yakuza 7.

It really does appear as if there is no massive checklist to complete. Although there is the Sujimon list (find and best 250 varients of enemy.) But that doesn’t seem too bad. Or it might be a pain in the ass and have some weird rare spawn type shit. Will see.

I’m totally loving the game though. Yokohama is huge in comparison to Kamurocho. Walking around China town for the first time was an awesome sight to behold.

I think this is the best Dragon Engine has looked and performed so far. It just feels really fluent moving Ichiban around.

As for the battle system. If you really don’t like turn based combat then you really ain’t gonna like Yakuza 7. I‘m talking if you have just a deep seething hatred for turn based games. You really won’t like it as it is very much a turn based game. Good thing for me that I like turn based games though :)

I think the reason for the lack of difficulty is due to the way it gates certain area. Like walking down China town for the first time I was running into level 23 fools at level 12. And they weren’t shy in kicking your ass and taking your money while at it.

I would maybe guess that’s why they didn’t bother with a difficulty slider this time out? With that said, it’s not the most taxing of RPG’s I’ve played. Although it does at least have a little more challenge than your standard Yakuza game of the past.

I really like the turn based system. I really welcome it. it’s such a nice breath of fresh air.

As for story? I’m just now finishing Chapter 4 and about to move onto Chapter 5. I spent a lot of time today just exploring and fighting random battles and doing some side stuff. basically Shenmueing

Collecting cans is a ton of fun. They should have made an online battle mode for that. It’s surprisingly fun. The movie mini game might be my favourite new addition though.

As for Ichiban? I really like this guy. He’s my type of guy. Somewhere between Majima and Kiryu be his personality. He’s not quite as crazy as Majima but he’s not quite as straight laced as as Kiryu. He’s somewhere in the middle. And I love that about him.

Damn good game so far. Really enjoying it. The RPG mechanics make a ton of sense given the crew that rolls with you throughout the game.

SEGA really should give the Dragon Engine to other teams within SEGA. Could you imagine a new Phantasy Star game with this engine? Why not? They showed this engine can do turn based RPG’s. Why not use it for other franchises?

I'll likely get Yakuza 7 when it debuts in the west. I have some concerns over the turn based stuff, not because it's not well executed, but because I've never really bought into that system. That said they've earned my trust in the previous games so I will certainly give this a go. Plus the story telling is awesome in the Yakuza series.

Just two days ago, Nagoshi said in a interview that he would love to keep and improve the RPG system
and turn based gameplay for the next game(s) if the feedback of the players is good enough.
They could also go back to the straight brawler action style or try a mix of brawler and turn based
but they wont decide that now. It will be interesting to see what happens next

From what Ive seen with how quick the turns are, even quicker than Grandia 2 (in my limited and weak interest in turn-base), therefor Yakuza 7 already has somewhat of a hybrid turn-based brawler haha

btw have a bit over an hour to play some Yakuza 6 before work. Starting chapter 7, then going to play most of the late night after i get home. Hoping to be finished with the game by Tues or Thurs.

Trying not to read too much here, I think I’ll just have to get this sooner than I’d planned; likely Wednesday after next. This and maybe the new DBZ game if it’s decent.

Been playing Y7 for over 20 hours now. Up to chapter 7. This game is pretty damn good! I spent like an hour and a half just farming money from the investment mini game (think something akin to the Cabaret club from Yakuza 0 mixed with the investment mini game also from Y0) today alone.

Seriously, it's basically Persona meets Yakuza...right down to the social links (I mean "friendships") with the rest of your party that you can engage in to further level everyone up...and I'm loving the hell out of it! Fantastic stuff through and through.

The completion list does indeed return. You get it from Chapter 5 onwards and it does tie into your attributes pretty heavily. There are certain areas locked off around Yokohama that will only open once you've leveled attributes up to a certain rank. Those attributes are partially tied to the completion list...so yeah, the list returns.

I'm really quite impressed with just how much they took the Yakuza formula and made a full fledged turn based RPG out of it. And it works! Granted, some of Yakuza's design has always been a bit RPG in nature (i.e dungeons, XP and such) but this game really does feel like they took a lot from Persona and brought it into Yakuza. And it really does work.

If I had one complaint with the combat? I will say I do kind of miss the variety of heat actions a little. What's here is great, but I do kind of miss the environmental heat actions that Y6, Kiwami 2 and Judgment all started dabbling more into. The summons are cool and earning new heat moves is fun. The job system is fun to explore and level up each job. But yeah, if I had one complaint? I do kinda miss the variety of the heat actions.

Also, the combat can be a little easy at times. Now that I've got everyone leveled up to lvl 20, I feel like the challenge that was in the early game is kinda removed. Maybe a difficulty option would have been nice to have here. But oh well, combat is still damn good for a turn based system. It's fast, fluid and a surprising amount of fun.

There is so much bloody dialog in this game...no wonder why they didn't fully voice act it. There is surprisingly more VA than not, but it still does cut corners here and there. There are literally 100+ small conversations you can engage in as you're running around passing certain shops or locations of interest. And they're all fully voiced. Not to mention the social link events that play out in the bar are fully voiced and most of the side quests have also been fully voiced. No wonder why they cut corners in some areas...this game has so much bloody dialog in it. I don't envy the translators...at all.

Also I really like Ichiban and
beating the shit out of those Bleach Japan sanctimonious pricks was so damn satisfying first time out!

The two japanese chain video game stores and publisher Tsutaya & COMG
have released their newest sales ranking and Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 is on #1,
miles ahead of DBZ Kakarot and Pokemon Sword.

Its also #1 on Amazon Japan video game best sellers.

Btw why do we never get these kind of physical guides in the west?
Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 Guide
Judge Eyes
Yakuza 0

Hardcover books with 200-500 pages with interviews and everything ... I would buy that.

Guides are kind of dead in the west. I mean, does anything really get a strategy guide anymore? It seems very rare. I assume the internet killed that business. Whereas in Japan, print media is still hanging on by a thread. I've bought a couple of Persona strategy guides while I was in Japan last year. Nice to have in the collection.

There are some exceptions, for example the guides for FromSoft games by Future Press. Its a german company.
Zelda Breath of the Wild, RDR 2, MGS V, Tomb Raider (Rise / Shadow), Pokemon Sword & Shield
and the Assassins Creed games had full hardcover guide books too.
But i guess all of them are really big franchises, so it makes sense.
Translating or writing a official 500 page guide for a Yakuza game is probably a bit too much for a company in the west.

I've been hearing some very concerning things about the later half of 7 but I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but the more upfront thing I'm hearing is that the boss fights in the last act are too long for their own good and get up into the 20-30 minute lengths which I really hope is not true cause that sounds like a nightmare pacing wise

At least everyone seems to like Ichiban alot, havent heard much on the other cast members but a good party dynamic can carry alot.

God, I hope not...

That would be brutal.
I heard a few people throw around the word grinding so maybe this is more a problem of people being under-leveled or underprepared considering the game only came out a little while ago so it isnt out of the question people may have rushed, although sometimes when your playing a game like this you dont actually notice how long fights go on for when you actually play it though personally I prefer it if fights don't cross too past the 10-15 minute mark.

I'm just taking things with a grain of salt, like could they of had bad equipment, using a bad strategy, be underdeveloped, not skipping heat animation and so forth.

I bought it on the day it was announced because i never played Yakuza 3 or 4
(i saw a 100% playthrough of Yakuza 5 on Youtube) and Sega / RGG Studio tweeted
that the first run with the physical PS3 Yakuza 5 case will be very limited.
Three full games for 60€, i can complete my PS4 collection and i can show Sega that there is still a demand in the west ...
of course i will buy it.
