General RGG Discussion

A little bit of Karaoke.

I truly love Ichiban :) Also, I fucking love that there is SEGA music to be collected in this game. You can buy CDs from the many merchants across town and most of them are SEGA music. I bought the Daytona USA theme from the Dragon Kart store tonight. Am holding out hope for some Shenmue music or Jet Set Radio...but so far haven't seen any....but I have seen music from Nights on sale via the Trash Collecting mini game (or I think it was the Trash Collecting mini game from memory)

Awesome stuff! Man, Y7 is good!
Any more Sega music? I am still not buying, probably, because of the turn based, but the rest of the game is so fucking appealing...

I'm going to get it when it comes west. As someone who isn't sure on the turn based stuff how do you feel it works with the game? Is it easy to understand/get to grips with. I feel almost like I want to put aside my concerns, as generally I don't like turn based stuff, as the Yakuza games stories are always good,

I think it works great. At its heart, it's still very much a Yakuza game...just now with the RPG layer on top.

I liken it to the recent South Park games. It's fun and easy enough to pick up and play for everyone without being overly taxing or alienating to those who aren't into turn based RPGs. Physical Attacks are really just a matter of having strong weapons equipped while Heat moves are defined by MP, but MP is pretty generously dished out so you never feel unequipped. Higher level enemies may sometimes hit you with a buff such as bleeding or stun attacks, but they're easily fixable so long as you have the right items on you.

You have attribute levels that are all attached to the typical Yakuza open world stuff. Some stuff in the world is locked off until you level these attribute points up (i.e the gambling mini games are attached to your "Mental" attribute level and unlock once you hit level 4).

I feel like this (like some of the most recent Yakuza games) does a good job in encouraging the player to explore more of the open world and its side activities. I've actually spent a bulk of my time Shenmue'íng it collecting money just to get the best weapons for combat which are considerably pricey. I spent at least 5 hours building up my Business this week just to get a ton of cash. Not to mention all the side story stuff.

But I imagine if you're just streamlining the story then the game will probably balance itself out difficulty wise as well. I mean, for me, I'm doing most of the world has to offer so I haven't found the game too taxing...but I do wonder how it would balance out for those who are just streamlining the story? i'd have to imagine it probably does a good job of adjusting difficulty in accordance to the players level. Like last night, I fought a main story boss who was at level 24 (I'm at level 23-24) and I did wonder "if I were at level 15, would the level of this boss adjust to something more favorable or would he remain at lvl 24?"

But yeah, the turn based stuff really isn't too bad at all. It's simple enough to pick up and play and captures most of the Yakuza charm well enough. At its heart, it still feels very much like a Yakuza game. And that's a good thing.

On a another note, I just unlocked plant growing...yeah, this game actually allows you to grow plants...maybe this was divulged before release, but I sure as hell didn't know this was a feature beforehand so I was shocked when it unlocked :D

great news

I mean do keep in mind, the caveat here is POTENTIAL sales, so its not actually hard numbers, but it at least gives a good sign that it'll be closer to 6's sales than not.

How do have they access to digital sales?

Edit: Nevermind, I just read it is Nagoshi's word xD

Alright, in the middle of Kiwami 2 I started the Majima Saga

Chapter 2... OMG the meeting with Makoto :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

I’ve been playing my Japanese copy, too. I’m at the part where you take Ichi to a school where he can take certification tests. They have tests about sports, music flags, world history, the history of sega, the history of yakuza, etc.

The sports one threw me off because it asks questions about sports I don’t know shit about such as skiing, track and field, etc. I could only answer questions about basketball and boxing. The baseball question just felt too much in context in a Japanese setting didn’t feel universal.

The Sega Tests have a lot of Sakura Taisen questions, which I haven’t played in 20 years. But it asks some generic questions like on which console did Sonic debut on.

Are the answers for these questions set or are they randomized, always?

Just asking so that the guide that I will use will be of any use, for this section.

Kiwami 2

Kaware san...

KAWARA SAN

KAWARA SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

Detestable character.

1 had badass old men in prominent roles (Kazama, Shimano, Sera, Terada), but on the Yakuza side. They then introduce Kawara to try and make him some sort of badass, but he comes off as a smug asshole and aside from the whole rescue thing (which even then, getting rid of
Ryuji instead of raising him like his son
, is a pretty big dick move), there is little to like about him and I won't say that it's poor-writing, but the character just seems out of place; for a series that has a pretty wide list of anti-heroes, he just doesn't fit in with a single one of them.

Well I'm not sure that about anti-heroes, at least in the first 3 games. I wouldn't call them like that.

I think it's a good anti-hero, killing all the koreans with no mercy and no trials, even when in the end had a "valid" reason to do it. If you wanna put it like that, the one that is pure and always follows the rules like a movie it's Date San (even he shout: "NOOO" when Kawara san wanted to kill the korean traitor of the police, I mean come on Date san, fuck off, let the guy kill that bastard and that's it)

Still plugging at Yakuza 7.

I am 50 hours in at Chapter 10. I have poured so many of these hours into side content. Been building up the business (just moved from the start up shop to the fancy new high rise office building in China town)....aiming to get that thread finished by tonight. You can earn a LOT of easy money dipping into that thread.

Also worked on some of the "social links" for fellow members of the party.

Also been doing more side quests...I'm surprised how much I'm still unlocking. I just unlocked the second arcade in Yokohama (one that is attached to a side quest).

Been running around doing random Battle.com hero quests (mostly just random odd jobs like looking for cats, or helping bystanders in trouble etc)

In terms of storyline, I'm pretty much in the meat and potatoes of it. I'm not sure if I fully understand everything and I will have to look up a detailed plot breakdown when I'm done...but I think I get most of what is going on (or the basic jist of it)

Still aiming to Platinum it. My trophy count is sitting at 41% for the game. It seems fairly easy to do. Just a bit grindy is all.

Also did more of the Dragon Kart stuff. It's kind of fun...if not a little void of challenge.

I really like this game...quite a bit. I really like Ichiban. I really like Yokohama. The turn based stuff still hasn't lost its appeal for me.

I wonder when they'll start saying more about the Western Release of Y7? I can't imagine this game gets a fall release. I'm still calling either August or September at the latest. You don't want to release it around the time of the new consoles at the end of the year.

The late summer release has proven well for them in the past considering Kiwami and Kiwami 2...yeah, I could see August or September. I guess they're waiting for that HD collection to come and go before announcing more on Y7 though.

Also, if this game gets an English dub, which is looking to be a possibility, do they bring back Mark Hamil (or any of the original English cast at that?) for Majima?

Kiryu is an anti-hero, Majima is an anti-hero, Saejima, etc. These are all die-hard Yakuza; they have committed unspeakable amounts of questionable acts, from beating people up, to robbing them, etc.

Then, you look at the old guys; they were assassins, they blew up and set fire to buildings, etc.

These guys are all MASSIVE anti-heroes, as that's the nature of things.

Only Akiyama and Shinada are clear-cut good guys, dragged into bad situations (ESPECIALLY Shinada). Tanimura and Tatsuya are just young guys that fell off the wrong path, but haven't done a lot of bad things (Tatsuya specifically, was just a troubled youth, but he got better).

That's what I meant by a series chock-full of anti heroes. Kawara definitely counts for one as well, but he doesn't fit in with any of the above, as he did the crap he did because he doesn't give a shit and gets joy out of killing people for no reason.

The entire intention of the series is to show that Kiryu (specifically, though Saejima and to a lesser extent, Majima also display at times) is NOT this asshole, POS person that he was becoming in 0; he is a good, noble and moral human being, that is forced time and again, into situations and problems that he does not wish to be a part of, but because of his standing in the world, he must take up the reigns. The point of the series is to show that being a Yakuza is not this glamourous life of crime and grandeur, that behind all this are real, decent people, that made bad decisions and thus are now stuck in a life they don't want.

With a nobly-written and characterized cast, now nearing the hundreds (may be over that now, actually), Kawara is one of the VERY few, that is not noble at all; he's just an asshole,
abandoned his daughter
(the reasons in-game are bullshit; if that happened in real-life, the child would 9/10 times not want anything to do with the father), killed dozens of innocent people for no reason and treats everyone like shit.

Not to go back on my crusade here, but this is another reason why Seishu completely lost the plot in 2; he's glamourizing bad/evil, instead of showing that bad/evil is, "heroic," (I know, Kawara is written as a sad old man with no one in his life, but he is still put on a pedestal, when he should really be treated like a villain) which funnily enough, happens to Terada as well lol. I put heroic in quotes because in reality, it's all a sham.

Anyways, I'm rambling, sorry for the essay.

Basically, TL;DR: virtually all of the protagonists of the series are all anti-heroes, while Kawara is just an asshole protagonist.

To your second part, that's not the point of the series though; look at 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 0, spinoffs.

Each of those games ends off with an Aesop, a moral, a POINT in the story, that must get resolved and it happens via self-discovery and self-realization by either Kiryu, the portagonists or (generally), the antagonists.

The end of 2 is literally, "a bunch of stuff happens, the dragons fight, the end." There are 0 consequences, 0 Aesop, NOTHING HAPPENS lol (of significance). So yes, the, "kill everyone!" that happened, doesn't fit/make sense to the tone and message of the series en-masse.

Again, as I've written a ton of times, 2 is absolutely NOT a bad game and definitely not even a bad game in the series, but it is abhorrently overrated and it is far and away the worst-written game in the series, plot-wise (though 4 still comes VERY close) and character-wise.

Started 7 last night; have literally only done the opening fight tutorial and I like this a lot already; thankfully the menus are not complicated, though I have a feeling they definitely will get more complex as the game progresses.

Still, Ichiban is HILARIOUS and that opening cutscene was very moving :(

Any confirmation on any versions having any English? Memory’s a bit hazy but I recall someone saying something similar about Judge Eyes. Typically it’s the Asian releases that get dual languages but I want to be sure before buying. Always hard to wait for the official US release.

There is no english version or asian version with english text available. Its the same thing as with the Yakuza 3-5 Re release, none of the asian versions have any english options, only the versions for the west have english options.
Even the Taiwan version of the 3-5 package or the single release version of Yakuza 5 has only chinese subs, no english.
So it seems like Sega wants it that way because i know of companies that have english options in their asian releases.
