I'm interested to know about this as well. At some point non-backers will be able to buy and see the documentary? this documentary looks really interesting.

Sorry I missed this. He is on here but doesn't check in that much here.

I have spoken to him recently and ATM it will be kickstarter backers who get copies first. They're still working out anything wider.
 
Just checked the Kickstarter and a snotty comment got an update as such:

Sadly, the original commenter replied with a sardonic comment. I am a little frustrated at how long this is taking (almost 3 years after their original deadline) and I do wish they were a little more on the ball with updating people, but there's no need to be rude.

That said, I have another Kickstarter around the same time (a Twin Peaks related one) and 4 years on, that looks no closer to ending and i've since lost interest in ever seeing it happen. I guess I love Shenmue too much to let this one go.
 
Pfft, are these Kickstarter noobs? I'm over here still waiting for Elysian Shadows. What's that been now? 7 or 8 years? Last time I saw Falco though, he had gone full crank.

Edit: I have complete faith in these guys and the documentary is going to be amazing.

Yeah I understand how people’s patience runs thin but these guys have already shown as a rough cut and the extra time only seemed to have helped add and tweak footage ect.

I hope for those that missed out we have an easy way of watching/purchasing this upon release as it appears no streaming deal was struck.
 
I mean it is an independent film and these things do take time to build. Not to mention the pandemic would have thrown a wrench in their way. This is why I kind of hate Kickstarter. Have patience people. Let them build something good. Happy to hear it’s finished though. Still wondering if there will be a way for us non-kickstarters to buy it, though.

Serious drawback of crowdfunding models is that backers genuinely don't appreciate how long these things can take, especially when dealing with personnel changes, legal wrangling, and attempts at a distribution deal. They unfortunately then take their pledge as licence to be a nasty prick in the comments. 🙄

IMO the doc team have been very forthcoming about the issues and kept people informed on a loose quarterly basis. I'm convinced even if they updated *every* month the same people would still complain, so to be frank - fuck them.

Just want to say thanks for being so patient and positive during this whole ordeal, especially considering how the alternative (being not patient and positive) is a route some people decided to take.

Its true I don't check here frequently but I do try my best to stay in the collective loop of all things Shenmue, even though Shenmue as a whole has been a bit of sensitive subject for me personally as of late.

I'd love to actively be discussing my thoughts on things like the anime and the future of the series but I was always hesitant to stick my head out for fear of being met with comments like "Hey! I gave you money and you haven't delivered. Go back in your hole and don't come out until it's done! (Or something along those lines)

So yea, little bit of anxiety whenever shenmue is mentioned but I know that's just me over reacting. The entire Shenmue fan base and the handful of angry people on kickstarter are not mutually exclusive.

don't take anything I said as being negative here in regards are you on any of these communties. I don't believe I have ever had the pleasure of ever speaking to you. You are doing an amazing job and while I kick myself for not knowing about the Kickstarter and backing it, I am hoping we get a chance to purchase your work still. And hope once you are finished with your project you can come to interact with us more. You are a part of the fandom. Thank you for your hard work. Don't pay attention to the jackasses with no respect for how hard someone has to work to release a damn documentary.

Thank you for your message. I really *really* hope my comment above wasn't taken as a negative. Indeed, I posted on the Kickstarter to defend what's been going on. I honestly believe that you guys are doing the best you can. The rough cut shown a while back (along with the live stream) has convinced me that this will be worth the wait. I can only understand how frustrating this must be, so please believe me when many of us are rooting for you.

I also hope that your feelings for Shenmue aren't permanently tainted; it's precious to many of us and I can only be grateful that folks like you are doing something great to show others how special it is.

Anyhoo, keep your head up and look forward to the final product when it eventually arrives :)

Quick question for those of us who didn’t get to back the project. Will there be a way for us to buy it when it’s done? Or is that something you can’t talk about right now.


Cheers and can’t wait to see the finished project. The trailers released showed promise.

I would like to think people would be able to buy a copy after all this said and done. I don't want make any guarantees, but if we are left with a surplus of copies (which we will be) I don't see why we couldn't sell and ship those to people.

Didn't read negative at all :) No worries there my friend. You've always been super positive over on the KS page and i really appreciate it.

I don't think Shenmue will ever be permanently tainted for me. I hope not, anyway, or else I'll really end up regretting my tattoo haha. I had to take a bit of a mental break from it but it's not going anywhere. It'll always have a special place in my heart and I look forward to my next playthrough.
