What if what we see of Chai is Ryo's vision of him and he seems a little weird because secretly Ryo hates chinese people? And Shenmue, in the end, is a tale of overcoming prejudice and Chai and Ryo end up BFFs?
Yeah, that sounds about right.
But honestly, his (it?) backstory could be relatively similar really. I still don't know how supernatural Shenmue is going to get... or is under the hood.

Yeah, always thought he was a drug addict hence his connections with the Chi You Men and Terry's gang. His profile in the Shenmue 1 mentions he "taught himself" his martial art. Probably just means he was exiled for his actions. I mean considering Zongquan got exiled too by his master, he is practically a saint compared to Chai...
