As much as I appreciate the better voice acting in S3, I really would love a future dlc option to overlay microphone hissing as a callback to the awful quality from the original games. I think it would tie things together in a fun way for the original fans. Thoughts?

I doubt what you're hearing in the old audio is microphone hiss, but probably dither noise from getting the (presumably) 44.1khz audio down to 22khz for space-saving reasons. Either way, it wouldn't be that hard to do.

But why? It'd make sense in the context of a "retro mode" that downsampled texture quality, resolution etc. but not on its own.

Reminds me of how Uncharted 4 had silly modes like that you can play around with after beating the game. 8-bit audio mode for example.

You know, that might be kind of fun if the went all out. It could be called the "Retro Pack" and include something like:

Audio dithering.
"Dreamcast grind" sound added to the loading screens.
Dreamcast button prompts/icons.
Original HUD.
Original Notebook sounds.
Original model Ryo and Shenhua.

I'm sure we could imagine other callbacks. Maybe a VMU with little animations in one of the corners or something.
