Random Shenmue III Thoughts

So Yu has always stated that a digest movie will be included to get people who haven't played the first two games up to speed (or those who haven't played them in a while), and recently it has been confirmed.

This is probably random, but I wonder how difficult it was to get access to use old Shenmue cutscenes from Sega? I mean, surely they own all the rights to those games. Doesn't it make things a little bit complex? Or is it a simple as Yu saying to Sega "I'm going to need to put a bunch of Shenmue I and II cutscenes in the game to get players up to speed" and Sega saying "ok"?

Are you the guy posting pics in 500k at the moment? The pics are great - I can never get enough of that place and love seeing everyone's photos n' videos. Awesome that you recruited a new fan!

Nah, I haven't posted pics in any groups so ain't me.

That is a good question reprise. I personally would find it cooler if they remade the essential cut scenes for the digest movie with the Unreal 4 Engine. Not gonna happen though I think. But it might be so cool.
Imagine if that was the task given to Noconkid, to remake the scenes for the flashback stuff. That would be class.

Would be cool but I dont think they did. Thats a ton of work on assets that ultimately most newcomers will probably skip anyway.

See, if it also didn't seem like a bit of a logistical nightmare (haven't to recreate assets, recreate old scenes piece by piece and match the old audio to each scene), I'd consider it a viable option, but I just don't think they can do it (or rather, it would not e worth the effort), but at the same time, I just can't wrap my head around the idea of Sega just lending Yu the licence and allowing him to use as much footage of the old games as he wants. I mean, this kind of thing is unprecedented.

From reading the interviews etc it woudl seem 3 starts with the ending of the cave scene so they have clearly rebuilt that from scratch and it makes sense.

Doing the other flashbacks would work because it offers continuitiy with the rest of the game, its whether they felt it was a good use of resource to do so. SEGA have, in all fairness, given Yu almost all of the assets so I get the impression he could use those as he saw fit. Definately unusual as @Reprise said but not out of the question if it meant resources could go elsehwere.

They let him use the source code of the first two games, he has stated that lots of assets from Shenmue I & II would be used for Shenmue 3. I dont see how using a clip from those games is any different than using any other asset like textures or sounds, as they all fall under the same license of Shenmue I & II.

Most likely the latter since Yu has good relations with SEGA.

They will come down the line at some point for archival purposes, but we are not going to post scans of a magazine on the day its released to buy at retail.

On that point, once I get finished up with the History section of the site, I will begin working on lots of archival magazine scans. It will be a pretty big project, but its been semi worked on for some time now. There will be a lot of work done on that going forward.
