Random Shenmue IV Thoughts.

I really want some kind of director's cut.

ININ mostly publishes pixelated indie games or retro inspired games. They probably have a connection with Ysnet and when the deal with Deep Silver expired, they expressed interest in publishing the game. If Yu Suzuki is working on a game similar to Air Twister right now, ININ probably will publish it too.

Maybe an Xbox/Switch port is realistic, but who knows. More dlcs for Shenmue 3 will be appreciated. :)

But what if we got some kind of Director's Cut or remaster/borderline remake? I mean weirder things have happened and it is becoming more common for games that aren't that old and were "flawed" to get new updated versions (Yooka-Laylee is getting a remake for example). I think this is unlikely, due to the development costs, time and risk involved, but I can dream. It would be cool.
Certainly, one shouldn't discard anything after seeing remasters for Night Trap and Corpse Killer.

"the company says it is looking forward 'to accompanying Shenmue 3 into its next phase' and that this collaboration marks 'a new beginning' for the game."

This can only mean ports, surely? That's all I can think of. The game is half a decade old and wasn't that commercially successful. A Switch and/or Switch 2 port would make sense.

A director's cut could easily fix most of the game's issues. Let's hope so. I'd take it. :)

@iknifaugood hi pal! Wanna know your thoughts at this event. What scenario has more probability?
a) its aiming towards a Switch port and nothing else.
b) besides the above reason, they have non-public disclosed info about some other event which potentially could pump Shenmue 3 sells (yes, I mean S4 related info 😋)
Thanks in avance for your insight.
Hi! If I had to bet, I would assume that this is only a port for S3, possibly a director's cut, since they only mention obtaining the rights to S3 and not the series more broadly. ININ doesn't appear to be a very big publisher so I would imagine that this will be limited to Switch and/or mobile platforms if anything. It's definitely better than no news though obviously this would leave Switch/Mobile players without a way to play S1 and 2 which seems unwise.

To save resources I would restrict the side-stuff solely to the 3 main characters' backstories. Inevitably Ryo will need to investigate his new environment, but I don't care if that includes very few new people to interact with, as long as their NPC existence matters, no more random kung-fu masters with debatable need for inclusion. Would love exploring floors of buildings like the QTEs in S2 and just beating on random NPCs to get to Dou Niu-esque character.

I would keep the arcades/pawn shops/trading and economy systems (redress and reuse everything from S3) but pare down their number and make them completely optional. Maybe you need to pay for a hotel or boat, but if you don't have the money Ren will pay with pirate funds.

I would have longer major cutscenes (voiced and moving camera etc) and restrict every other minor interaction to text-only interactions (i.e. like in yakuza games) to get more story conveyed. Would be good for getting Ryo's internal thoughts on things as well.

My hope is that the story hyper focuses on creating great banter and bonds between Ryo, Ren and Shenhua and getting to Lan Di, and little else. Their environment should be of little consequence to them at this point, narratively and design-wise. To use Yu Suzuki's analogy of Shenmue as a train where you move from carriage to carriage, S4 should be going through the tunnel, few distractions, put the blinders on and go forward.

Shenmue really needs a reputation system, it doesnt even have to be anything that complicated. A simple meter that would build "confidence" over time with a character/NPC giving you better information/maybe better trade deals with shop owners and also favors would go along way in worldbuilding.

I don't know about you guys, but that mobile ysnet game and all the stuff Sammy-Sega announced made me very sad somehow.

I hope there's some good news about Shenmue 4 until the end of the year.

How about skipping the next 2-3 areas from the main s4 game and making a 2d adventure out of those missed areas in the arcade of S4 in order to give time and resources for the finale and finish the series with S4?

Or if some of the series was supposed to control a different character then those could be in 2d adventure form. Could even be dispersed how Sonic Frontiers dots the stages around the open world map. In the main S4 game you could find a clue of Iwao's activity in that place and it could transition to a 2d level with Iwao walking around for example. Graphics-wise could look like this -

Not only would that be one way of speeding up development and progression of the story, but I think that stylistically it would be really cool. Also, I'd be a little scared to see how Iwao now looks with the cartoony S3 NPC design style.😂

Or the YS could just condense the rest of the story to just a title card that says “Ryo Wins”.

I wonder if at the end when Ryo beats Lan Di there will be a choice select to kill or spare him.

Depending on your choice Ryo either achieves his destiny or is destroyed.
I wonder if Shenhua's mystic powers are actually that her role/ destiny is to stop the cycle of revenge that has been caused by the mirrors and she is forced to live forever (or is re-incarnated without her memories over and over for the same purpose) until she achieves that goal (hence why the lore makes her seem really old), but the cycle keeps happening over and over and has done for centuries. So Ryo's destiny is to stop the cycle and save her from having to infinitely experience the same cycle. If you kill Lan Di, you die a miserable lonely drunk kung fu master (or someone kills you in revenge) and Shenhua keeps on living for centuries, searching for the person who could cure her curse, destroy the mirrors, allow her to die, and end the cycle of revenge. If you spare Lan Di, you live happily with Shenhua with kids etc and she gets to live a normal life.

So, it would be cool if you knew all that ahead of time and still got to choose to kill/spare Lan Di, knowing that if you kill him, you are condemning Shenhua to live out the curse potentially forever, maybe Ren is shouting in your ear to kill him for the treasure and untold wealth, which Ryo could build up the Hazuki dojo etc. Would be good if they made Lan Di kill 1 or 2 other important people (i.e xiuying and her brother) to make the decision sting even more. Thinking about others instead of yourself. Would be a good test for Ryo.

YSNET are in business and working. That's always good
Yeah but mobile games. No one cares about mobile games and next to the new VF it’s depressing. Plus YS INVENTED VF to begin with so it’s doubly depressing.

Imagine if when Steve Jobs was fired from Apple they stole his imac idea and went on to big success while he was forced to worked a street sweeper.

To be fair to Yu Suzuki, I think he’s either working on it in some advisory capacity or doesn’t want to work on it at all. He did seem to hint at knowing about and maybe being involved in some stuff a few years ago, however…. Could just be a bad translation, but sounds like he's confessing to knowledge of some sort.

Asked if he would like to return to Virtua Fighter and Out Run, Suzuki told VGC: “Yes I would like to [return to those]. If you’re going to ask me what, I can’t answer that!”

Pushed on whether that means he might already be in discussions for the IP, he replied: “Yes, there might be something [happening]. But since the IP you mentioned are owned by Sega, I would need to work with them. I am a special consultant with Sega, but we will need to talk.”

On the contrary, mobile games are earning close to twice as much as console games annually, with continued annual growth that the console market does not have. Things change, and I think in recognizing this Suzuki is an astute businessman in addition to being a game designer. In any case, as shown with Air Twister, the platform is not so important as long as the game is designed with the ability to use a controller.
