Random Shenmue Thoughts

Is it just me, or does Eric Kelso kind of 'forget' to do his Gui Zhang voice during certain bits in the 70-man battle? :p
Heck, its nearly close to creeping in to his Ren and/or Jacky Bryant voice.
Specifically, the lines that have always stuck out to me are:
'That's the Hazuki style?!'
'All power, no focus!'
'You're still green, eh?'
'That's it!' (in response to Ryo asking, 'Shall I take them all on?')

I dunno, it always stuck out as weird to me - to the point I questioned whether it was Gui Zhang saying the lines initially (he just seems to lose all of the gravelly quality in his voice - unless it was just Eric finding it difficult to deliver these lines in that voice??
He does sound different, but he still sounds like the same character to me. I see where you're coming from though...

I see what you mean. I think is just him shouting his lines for that section that probably makes him sounds different. For the rest of the game, Gui Zhang has a more calm voice. I would even say Ryo sounds a bit unlike himself there due to the same reason.

One interesting thing though about voice acting and the 70 man battle that i noticed in the rerelease, with the Japanese voice selected, some of the thugs have some lines in that part while they don't in English, only Ryo and Gui Zhang do. This is only heard when you are in the 70 man battle on the story and not the mode that you can select on the menu.

I’m watching this show right now and the background music sounds really familiar at one part.

Is the bgm that starts at 5:45 from Shenmue or is it just similar to one of the pieces?

I really hope it is cuz the chef they’re introducing in that scene is named Suzuki and specializes in Chinese food ?

Don't think it is exact, but it does sound like this to me:

He's gonna be pissed at himself he could've played Shen2 on Dreamcast or XBOX by 2001 or 2003. Then again, perhaps not--I'm jealous of those who only had to wait since HD reissue or randomly discovered them only in the 2010s

He's gonna be happily surprised again Shenmue 3 doesn't end the story and he'll be able to enojuy Shen4...!

So odd he said that he could not play Shenmue II because it only came out in Japan on Dreamcast and the North American version didn't. The PlayStation Access channel is UK based, it did get released on Dreamcast over there. It was the US folks that got screwed over. Maybe the guy lived in the states at the time? Either way im glad he got to play it on the rerelease.

The impression I get is that he didn't want to play it in Japanese. Also I think referencing anything Xbox related is a bit of a taboo on PlayStation Access.

Nevertheless, I love his description of the games. It's a really nice, basic summary of why Shenmue III is so important as well as an acknowledgment to the fans who've had to wait for so long. Definitely a lot of passion there, despite him appearing to be a more casual fan of the franchise!

Random question, but does anyone have any info on the divine beasts that are the keys to opening the door to Yuanda Zhu? What are they?

Here is a Wikipedia article on what they symbolize and relate to:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Symbols
But it basically all connects to the seven stars, or Big Dipper, that was talked about in Shenmue 1, when bringing the Phoenix Mirror to the antique shops.

Just finished another playthrough of 1 and 2. I had been wanting to play them again, but was considering holding off until 3 came out - in the end I couldn’t help myself, but now I’m definitely not touching them until a week or two before 3 comes out. (Then it’s obviously a marathon going through all 3 in one go)

I'm off to Japan this coming Friday for a month.
I'm planning on finally making the trip out to Yokosuka at some point during that month.

Any advice from anyone who has made the trek?

Dobuita is super Americanised, so if you're a fan of that type of food, there are some great burgers and Mexican stuff to eat.

That's all I got lol; I know I'm probably the only person that was super underwhelmed when I went there and almost disappointed, at how Americanised it was and how it had just a bit, but not a ton of the feel that it had in the games.

It is nice to walk down Dobuita though and the military ships at the harbour are boss.

I've never actually been there but I was really disheartened when I took a trip via google maps... It wasn't the dobuita I knew at all lmfao. But I mean, it's been 30 years and many liberties were taken...

It's Americanized in the games, too, with burger stands and the military jacket store. So the game is true to real life, in that sense.

In my opinion, the game represents dobuita street very well.

It shouldnt come as a suprise for any shenmue fan that dobuita street is americanized.
Never thought why Ryo was seeking foreign sailors? Where did Yu get the idea for that? Maybe because Yokosuka harbor has been a home port for US navy since 1950.
