Random Shenmue Thoughts

i have a question which is probably a bit random and i guess it has something to do with
the japanese - chinese - english translation / language,
if you ask around for "Man Mo" in Shenmue 2, the NPCs and Ryo never say Man Mo
(the subtitles say Man Mo in the available languages that i can understand),
but they always say Boom Boo (?)
why is that and what does it mean? why does make Man Mo more sense than what they are saying in japanese?
i mean i cant understand Man Mo and i cant understand Boom Boo? so why the difference? thanks.

Japanese vs. Chinese. You can hear it with a bunch of names, like Jianmin becomes "Keh-min".

i think this is a bit confusing because no one in Shenmue 2 is speaking chinese. just japanese or english.
there are chinese signs everywhere, often with the english version on there too
but then if you talk to the "chinese" people, they are saying names that you never heard before
and that are not in your notebook.

The Japanese dub follows Japanese naming conventions, and the English subtitles are phonetic transliterations of the Chinese.

i replayed the HD re-release with japanese audio and the new german subtitles
and then you have scenarios like with Man Mo, where all the subtitle texts and the notebook says Man Mo
but none of the japanese voices say Man Mo.

so if the japanese NPCs are saying Boon Boo (?), this is the japanese name for Man Mo in chinese?
sorry i'm really confused ?

Well I platinumed Shenmue II today! Felt a sigh of satisfaction as I did what I planned to do. Maybe I should platinum persona V before Royal releases here or complete and platinum final fantasy VII before remake releases. ?

Anyone have a higher quality version of this Shenmue II trailer available for download? I remember watching this over and over again in QuickTime when it was released:

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but @Sappharad recently remade it in 1080p 60FPS:

I found my original VMU saves today :

That save game is older now than I was when I first played it. 16 back then, 34 now. The wait for Shenmue III has not been kind !

All those years ago, I thought the finale of disc 3 was the coolest shit I'd ever played. When I played the HD release last year, i was pleased that I enjoyed it just as much if not more. I certainly appreciated disc 4 much more so.

They are really special games that take me back to a time when I hadn't a care in the world.

I'd like to see Sega release a Shenmue style beat em up. It wouldn't break the bank to develop using cell shades graphics. It would be a nice side piece to have in the Shenmue fandom. At the very least Sega might add Ryo, Ren and Guizhang as DLC in the new Streets of Rage:unsure:

Yeah, good idea! I would definetly buy this game. Even better if we will see Ryo's brown jacket and blue jeans in Yakuza 7 as DLC outfit. I always dreamed to see it in the Yakuza series or at least to have opportunity to hire Ryo for Majima Construction :D.

River City Sailors?

You know how Ryo bows in the first few games? It looks like he's putting a sword away. The Sword hand guard was the family crest. And there is a sword in Shenmue 2. Coincidence? lmao

This image in Fuku-san's room kind of blew my mind last night while playing given the teaching from Xuiying when Ryo is trying to catch the leaves and the flashback he has at his most pivotal moment when he is about to defeat Dou Niu. Not sure if this falls under detail I'm noticing for the first time or detail I've forgotten about.

I also chuckled about how brazenly Ryo enters Fuku-san's room, rifles through his belongings, and flat out steals a move scroll from his desk. I had just been playing a save file I had in Shenhua's house, as I was curious about whether Bailu has electricity, and if you try to enter Shenhua's room before dinner Ryo says "You can't just walk into someone else's bedroom"
