Random Shenmue Thoughts

My boy Sigmund hasn't got around to creating an account, so, using the year of experience I gained during GCSE psychology, I will have a crack at it:

- Children cultivating vegetables suggests new and exciting opportunities are unfolding in your life. The children represent potential and the success in managing to grow vegetables represents the work and dedication put into accomplishing the task
- Tom moving from one hotdog truck to the next represents a quandary in which you are progressing in some area of life, but the progression is limited to sticking to what you are comfortable and familiar with, as opposed to blossoming into something new. He didn't move from a hotdog truck to a burger truck to a kebab truck, etc. - it was all the same. Perhaps you are apprehensive about change and how it will affect your life?
- The symbolism of Ryo being stuck on a pole is essentially the Tom scenario retold, except you and Ryo are one and the same. Standing still - staying exactly where you are - provides a sense of safety and comfort, whereas moving just an inch in another direction fills you with anxiety and fear about what might happen. Taking the latter approach is obviously more dangerous because it takes you out of your comfort zone, but doing so is the only way you are going to get anywhere else but standing in the same place for evermore

TL;DR: Quit being such a schoolboy!

I have sent the invoice via PM.
Haha! Amazing :)

Well, I have been in the same job for 13 1/2 years and am wanting change, but am afraid to do so...

Mind you, it's like horoscopes; vague enough that it could relate to anybody, but detailed enough to make it seem personal. Still, cracking job sir~!

While I think about it, i'm pretty sure Ryo would reject any carrots the children cultivate!

He wouldn't reject them because he knows that those children were working hard in the fields, carefully picking carrots one by one.

I made Shrimp Fried Rice last night and as I was washing and cleaning the carrots, I thought of this exact line lol

As I have stated in the past, I love how Yu Suzuki and Shenmue treat martial arts with respect. Unlike other series that exaggerate for entertainment value, Shenmue is much more subtle. For example, when Ryo throws a simple punch in Shenmue: Chapter One Yokosuka the attention to realism is phenomenal.

One of the lessons I learned when throwing a punch is to use the two strong knuckles while punching like a snake. In other words, retracting my arm as quickly as possible. This might be a small detail, but it shows the amount of care on display. It's one of the reasons why I have such respect for this franchise. I just hope we'll one day see the end of this martial arts epic.

Wonderful little details like this is why I love Yu Suzuki and Shenmue. Not to derail the thread but there was a wonderful quote from a interview that I unfortunately can't find. Basically how Yu wanted to make games feel like reality. I do believe we'll see the conclusion to the Shenmue saga. I have always maintained that the hard part was getting III off the ground.shenmue-3-1.jpg

As I stated in a previous post, I appreciate the realistic details that Shenmue has for the martial arts. In the last post I identified how realistic the punches were, this time, however, I want to draw attention to another realistic detail.

Ask any martial artist worth their salt and they'll tell you that most of their power comes from the lower half of the body. In other words, most strikes gain their power from the legs and twisting of the hips rather than the upper body. Moves such as the Pit Blow and Elbow Assault use what is called in Xiaolin Kung Fu a horse stance. You'll also notice that during the Pit Blow animation that Ryo's hips are twisting while striking. With the Elbow Assault, he ends in a full-on horse stance.

Once again, another couple of examples of the finer details Shenmue shows towards realistic depictions of martial arts.

I can't disagree myself. The way martial arts kept true to form made you feel like you were learning something unique and respectable. Couple that with the fact that once upon a time it was frowned upon for them to show westerners their secrets so to speak. I'm not exactly too knowledgeable about when it became acceptable or if it ever did stop being frown upon is unknown to me. I would indeed be curious if someone from that side of the world could answer. Maybe@Kiyuu would you know? (If she isn't around, it's still dope to see you still have an account after all these years)

But, the fact we get shown little realistic details of something like this to me was engaging, and mentally stimulating to me. The attention to detail on them explaining to you what to do with your body, but not exactly telling you button presses. But little things like shift your momentum forward and strike. it was just overall amazing to me. Just some thoughts I have.

This is a piece of Shenhua's dialogue in the bad ending of Shenmue 2. I always knew the 'dragon' represented Lan Di but I never really thought much about the 'morning star' but seemingly in this context, there's good reason to believe it symbolizes Ryo.

This made me think of the significance of the poem. In Shenhua's poem, she says 'a morning star shall glisten alone'. Does this mean that Ryo will be the sole survivor of his fight with the 'dragon'?

Guys, I am such a big ass fan of this series that I just beat it a few weeks ago and wanna play it again eventually. TV kinda went out so I have to buy a new one. So, soon I'll be replaying shenmue 3. But, I wanna show you guys how I came to know of this Shenmue. It's a story I never told on the old version of this forum.

So, a 14 year old me had a friend I been friends with since I been 8. We would go over his house and do everything together. Well, he had a gaming uncle who was much much older than us. Like his 30's. He would come over and play games with us. We considered him a gaming god. Because playing against him in anything was a challenge. Well, he told us about Shenmue. And, he had me wrapped. Like early days, a before it ever came out. It was touted as a game you can do anything in. So, fast forward a couple years later. I got a dreamcast. And, he never lets anyone borrow games. So, I asked him could I please borrow his shenmue 1 dc copy. he surprisingly said yes. So, I took the copy and went home. this was 2001. And, I didn't leave my house for two weeks. Just wrapped up. Well, when I beat the game. I felt unsatisfied. What about part two. So, I got on the cell phone a nokia brick phone. lol. Called him. Said you played Shenmue 2 and have it? He said no. It never came state side. I was crushed. I made a promise that day, I was gonna somehow get that game. And when I do. I'll let him borrow it. He said okay.

2003. I came across my chance. Bought a copy of Shenmue 2 dc for 18 dollars. I felt like the divine gods of gaming have answered. I didn't tell Jeff, that I achieved my goal. I played the game, beat it. That next day after beating it, overcome with emotion that I am now left at another cliffhanger. I wrapped up my system, and all the cords and grabbed the game. And traveled to his home. I still have yet to tell him. I wanted to surprise him. I felt I owe him for introducing me to something I came to love and without knowing him this may have never happened. I felt a sense of accomplishment. I knocked on his door and came in with my bookbag. Sat down and we chatted for an hour. Eventually, he asked me what was in the bookbag cause I never bring it. I smiled and said oh yeah, thats right. I pulled the bag up and brought out my dreamcast and sat it down. His eyes lit up, cause his dreamcast has long since stopped working. He said why did you bring a dreamcast? He picked it up and looked at it. It works? I said yeah. They still sell em Jeff. He then said he wouldn't buy another because of no Shenmue 2. I then unzipped the front part of the bag and pulled it out of his view and just handed it to him quickly. He looked at it, then at me. then back at it again. His eyes big, he yelled you got a fucking copy!? how?! why didn't you tell me?! I said well, I wanted to surprise you Jeff. He said you letting me borrow it?

I said what kind of friend would I be if I didn't. It's why I am here. He started smiling and seemed really happy. He said you know I'm gonna need this for a few months. I said that is fine Jeff. You can borrow it as long as you need. I have already beaten it. It was thanks to you I even knew of Shenmue, and its because of you I got to play it. I am just happy I got the chance for us both to experience the next part. Needless to say, he was very happy. He asked me, how did I like it? I said Jeff I loved it. Even more than part one. His eyes got big.

I just wanted to share that. The moment still very vivid for me. Sadly, I dunno if he ever got to play three as I moved away and we lost contact. But, I know Jeff. And he got to play it. I think. It's crazy to me, to think of a friendship with his nephew which if I never had would have never lead me to meet him. And never lead me to this. It's just amazing to me.

My hot take: Ryo pulls a Goku and sacrifices himself to save the world, ascending to godhood. Doesn't the final chapter card have his face floating in the sky?

I have a Retroid Pocket, too. How does Shenmue run on it? I just assumed it'd be pretty rough. I finished PaRappa the Rapper on it the other day :D

Just saw this on Twitter. Somebody's running a fully automated stream of Shenmue II duck racing with Twitch chat integration for placing bets. It's insane how well they've pulled it off!

Today my thoughts drifted to when Ryo discovers the Phoenix Mirror in Shenmue Chapter One: Yokosuka. Not only does its discovery reveal more about the Hazuki family, but the cutscenes that play after its discovery are also rich in spiritual lore.

It's moments like these that make me wonder why critics are so adamant about just leaving for Hong Kong right away. I hope if Shenmue IV becomes a reality, that this subtle mysticism returns. If anything, that was one of my issues with Shenmue III in its attempt to downplay those elements. And while I can not speak for all fans, if Shenmue III was targeted towards Shenmue fans you would know that the magic realism is apart of its allure. (Also, the Virtua Fighter combat engine).
