Sega: “We've seen the growth of Japanese IP on Steam on PC; that never existed before”

I don't want to be too critical of Sega, after all it's definitely better late than never but even after years of ill advised business decisions I'm still surprised by their naivety. It's almost like they are the only ones that don't have faith in their games when it's obvious to everyone else that their first party IP were always their greatest strength.

Yeah they're really kinda... dumb for lack of a better word. Believe me I understand playing it safe, but they have no problem publishing hospital simulators and mobile crap but it took THIS long to rerelease Shenmue? What about Skies of Arcadia? Panzer Dragoon? Fucking anything?!?

Sega has a lot to learn, but the good news is it DOES look like they're slowly learning. Maybe by 2040 we'll get some ports of games with good emulation that come from any console other than Megadrive...

Their mobile games made over a billion dollars last year and they've know about Shenmue III for about 4 years now and have planned to release the HD versions just before to III to boost excitement for it. If doing something that makes you a billion dollars is dumb then I don't know how this world works anymore.

I also don't get why you're calling them naive Bambi? Sega have been releasing their games on Steam for years and they're just noting that especially in the last 18 months sales of Japanese games have been higher. It's not like they've only released games for Steam for the last 18 months and are shocked people like them. They're talking about games like Jet Set Radio which they released in 2012 that are selling more now then they were 3-4 years ago.

I'm not criticizing them based on what they're saying now, I'm criticizing them based on their horrible track record...

You make a good point, I originally interpreted what the guy was saying as him being surprised that games they have recently put on Steam (Yakuza preorder springs to mind) are selling well when actually that's not explicitly stated.

As you say it could very well be the recent sales of ports like JSR that is giving them the confidence to release Yakuza etc.
