30th September all surveys close. That's the last date you can do upgrades etc. Again I'm not sure of the time it closes so worth doing ahead of time.

13th August is when the final surveys go to backers and the slacker backer shuts.

Serious question: I want to up my pledge, but I feel guilty knowing that the more I pledge, the more they'll have to spend paying Fangamer to make the rewards rather than on the game's development. Does anyone else have a similar outlook?

The cost of reward fulfilment comes out of your pledge. You're not costing them money by paying them more.
