Why is it that everytime a Shenmue game releases, a historical event happens right after it releases?

That's partially true: it never happened in global scale, the worst case scenario because thanks to lot of people working hard intensive to prevent it. Sometimes patched would do but others required full structure migration. Every critical company or institution took it seriously and amazingly they put computer specialist to work on it. But low profile companies or regular users who didnt patched for y2k (you can find the win95/98 y2k update archived at winworld for historic purposes) run into issues. so it happened locally in a very small scale.
It amaze me Netflix hasnt made a series of it, we can lol about y2k because anonymous heroes. Ironically we were way more undependant/disconnected back then than today :S It would be actual, funny, scary and with plenty of nostalgic early 00s-end of 99 references. Matrix for example.
edit: the news about y2k making your toaster bite your hand and such were laughable even then, everybody loled. They real fear was i.e. longstanding (a week? a month?) blackout.
