But we've had had that ending over 15 years already!

yeah i remember yu saying there will be a bad ending,i think in an interview
 
Shenhua is trying to find her stepfather or at least find out what happended to him. Ryo is trying to find Lan Di. Lan Di is trying to find the Phoenix mirror. The very nature of Shenmue's story requires a bad ending based on taking too much time to complete the story. It's a necessity. If Yu gave the player the ability to wait around until Ryo turns 40, it just wouldn't make sense.
