General RGG Discussion

nope, a PS4 is not some random mysterious thing where you can have super bad or good luck.
if a game has adaptive vsync ingame enabled, its there for everyone.
and if the framerate drops below 30 fps, which happens all the time on base PS4 - everyone will get screen tearing.

just because you dont notice it, doesnt mean that its not there.

screen tearing:

framerate:

i can link way more reviews with those examples if you like.
so please lets stop this pointless discussion.
I'll just leave this here:

I have NEVER seen anything like that or even close to it, from the Yakuza series. People had their panties in a bunch, in the demo, which had nothing to do with the final game anyways.

I conclude, for the final time, I had 0 screen tearing issues on my Japanese launch copy. None. Zero.

If you want to continue with the gfaqs bit, go ahead; there are more than just myself, who did NOT have screen tearing.

As for frame drops, yet again, aside from the pre-batting sequence, didn't happen once.

Now drop your goddamn pride and move on to something more constructive.

And I won't reply to you in this thread anymore, in regards to this subject, so don't even try.

Unpopular opinion, but I could never get into this series after the first game. Guess I fell in love with the absurd English dub, and it just doesn’t feel the same in Japanese.

English dub wasn't bad; Darryl Kurylo did an excellent job, Mark Hamill shines as Majima (but of course lol) and Eliza Dushku is good in almost anything she does (even if the things she does is less than stellar... lol). And she's sexy, so that's an element too :D.

Because of the first game, I always associate Yumi's voice with Dushku and not either of her Japanese VAs.

I couldn’t get into the dub. As I said, I’m way too much of a purist and I speak the language. I can appreciate that in the game, they use Western dialect because most
Of the real life powerful gangs are based out of Osaka.

I like when you explore new regions, you get an authentic experience hearing the local dialects. I’m already familiar with Osaka, Hiroshima and Nagoya dialects but the one in Fukuoka (though I’ve been there once on a business trip) was entirely new and unique to me.

Dubbing it for local audiences just ruins that novelty to me. While cursing in Japanese is more figurative and subtle , the English dub just overexxagerates on the cursing

"Come on, Fucker!"

Yeah, even I was a bit taken aback lol.

I much prefer Takaya Kuroda's voice, Hidenari Ugaki's, Rie Kugimiya, etc.

The Japanese dub is wonderful.

I understand that non-Japanese speakers can’t appreciatethe dialect differences, I think fans should feel something different when they interact with the people of different regions.

But I do appreciate how in Yakuza 5, they got Romi Park to play Haruka’s manager. Apparently, it was an intentional homage that their voice actresses played Ed and Al in Fullmetal Alchemist.

Plus, I like how when they use real life celebrities in the game, they also voice them and I feel it brings a more natural performance. I just can’t imagine Beat Takeshi and Riki Takeuchi dubbed.

Man I really have to give props to SEGA for their kiwami 2 release. Only 40 euros for the brand new steelbook edition on release day? You would think it's a remaster and not a remake at that price.

I think the English dub on the US release of the first Yakuza is a big part of the reason why I never really liked the game. Aside from the disappointing mechanics, the dub just kind of lingers in my mind. It wasn't bad by any means, but it just gave the game this weird vibe. Strangely enough, the first Yakuza is probably my least favorite of the mainline entries, and is most likely why I didn't care too much for Yakuza Kiwami either.

About Kiwami 2, it's really interesting how the cut-scenes look. While still somewhat dated, it goes to show just how much the original Yakuza 2 improved upon the first one technically. Kiwami's cut-scenes (aside from the new ones with Nishiki) looked TERRIBLE, despite being done with a newer engine and character models. Kiwami 2 however, despite using the exact same technique (laying new graphics over the old, original animation without tweaking anything), still look good and not too glaring.

Still knee deep in Yakuza 6, game is amazing. I feel like the dev team by this point has just mastered the whole design process and how to make a great Yakuza game. Love how much of the story is focused on mystery this time as well and how personal the story is to Kiryu and how many factions there are at work does make it feel closer to the earlier Yakuza games, what with all of the old organisations coming back rearing their ugly head again. Really enjoying the new locations and mini games too. Side quests are as funny as ever and I like doing as many as possible in my first playthrough. Only downside so far is the lack of memorable boss battles.

Eh. Kiwami 1 was better priced and was a remake. And remasters nowadays are going for less and less (Onimusha and Shenmue being two recent examples of this, REmake & RE0 being others). Looks like it has dropped in price since when I last looked it was going for like 42 quid over here, gone down to 37 quid which is really nice. Trouble is I'm already into 6 so don't have the time to play it anyway, but ehhh, got to support one of my favourite series, of course.

Might literally just go straight to Kiwami 2 after 6, lol.

Kiwami was a remake but in the old engine. It made sense it would be cheap considering it looked like a last gen game with half the content of zero.

That's true. Kiwami almost felt like DLC for Yakuza 0. Hell of an exaggeration, I know. Still glad that a steelbook was released of it too. Kinda wish that Yakuza 0 had a steelbook, but nothing wrong with the boxed "Business Edition".

I got Kiwami 2 at Launch day and have already played to chapter 8 and so far I really enjoy it. The story is interesting, better than the Yakuza Kiwami Plot so for. The new characters like Sayama are also quite interesting.

Considering that 0 and Kiwami 1 were released on the PS3 in Japan too, which kind of explains why it has lesser graphics than the Dragon engine. Prior to 6, the PS4 relesss we’re still being made with a PS3 console in mind

This is for the Yakuza veterans. Should I play the Yakuza games in release order or should I start with 0? Also where does the Yakuza zombie game take place?

You can start with Yakuza 0. It's a great prequel that doesn't necessarily step on the toes of the other stories (it actually enhances the first game/Kiwami, as it fleshes out certain relationships a little better), and it's exciting enough that it'd probably get you in the mood for the rest of the series. I'd say if you play 0 and don't like it, then it's a safe bet you won't like the rest much; but then the opposite is true as well. If you end up loving it, then you're ready for the rest.
The only downside to playing 0 first, I'd say, is the fact that it's easily one of the best in the series (though I'm sure Truck will chime in and tell you different), so playing everything else afterward might have an adverse effect on them. But all the same, it's still a surprisingly good starting point for something made so far into the series.

And the zombie game, Dead Souls, takes place (I'm guessing you mean chronologically?) in a bit of an alternate universe, so it's not really canon with the rest of the games. Within that alternate universe, I guess it takes place after Yakuza 4 since it originally came out the year after, and one of the playable characters was introduced in 4. But again, it's non-canonical, so it doesn't really count.

As for Majima’s story in 0, you’ll understand it more fully when you get to 4 in regards to why he’s in Osaka and how in the first Kiwami game, he makes reference to a friend who has been in jail longer than Kiryu.

And you’ll love the song of customizing the hostesses in 0 and Kiwami 2. If you have knowledge of Japanese porn, in a twisted way, you can appreciate that mini game.

To parrot others here. Play 0, it's my fav out of all the games and the best way to get into the series and find out if you would like it.
I'd say the order to go in is: 0,kiwami,kiwami 2. Then if SEGA bring the PS4 ports of 3/4/5 over or they get them up on PC do them. If not you could skip to 6 but you would miss up on alot of history/arcs that can add a deeper layer to the game.

While all games are similar in many ways things do change up in each game, some more then others.
The sub stories are also a fun part of the games and you have loads of side mini-games. Some might say it is worth picking them up just for the arcade games each game gets.

Speaking of sub-stories, I just played the male model one in Kiwami 2 yesterday, and it's absolutely HILARIOUS. The series' staple of characters and NPCs only speaking with text boxes and no spoken VO in sub-stories REALLY helped the humor in this particular one.

Kiryu's reaction when seeing the photographer for the first time had me rolling :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Still playing 0 and I think I still have a long way to go with the game before I decide to jump on any other entry from the series. Honestly I had not that much interest in the series before, but watching stuff like Kiryu's sad face when he loses in a pocket circuit race or his club dance poses never gets old for me. Having a blast so far and it's looking to be one of the best gaming experiences I had this year so far.
