General RGG Discussion

Unlike the American entertainment industry, there is such as thing as bad publicity in Japan.

I dunno. Lindsay Lohan didn’t have much of a career after being found guilty of being a heavy drug user. With this guy he was found not guilty and probably could have carried on acting to some degree. I meant it was very odd why he was accused with such career ending crap like that, someone must have had a grudge?

I didn't realise Tanimura's VA was found not guilty for the drugs thing. That's good news in a way, as I had wondered what they'd do when 4's remaster is released (if they'd somehow replace him, not that it seemed too plausible).

Speaking of remasters, I spent most of my time this week on Yakuza 3's remaster (waiting for Shenmue to get patched before playing it). Up to chapter 10 now. While I've always had a high opinion on 3, I've really come to realise I really do love quite a few of the longer side stories in the game - stuff like the Phoenix Wright style Cafe Alps investigation, Tuna Fund, the bodyguards for the casino, Cup Ramen mastery etc. You can definitely see its at this point where they really found their footing to develop the series side content into what it is today.

Also, turns out you don't get any amazing modding weapons or anything for placing 1st in the Mahjong championship, just a cup you can sell for an obscene price!

Just got Yakuza Kiwami I've played my first 10 hours or so and I'm enjoying it.

Kiwami is one of my favourite games in the series. I know people have issues with the way certain things in the game are handled (story and boss fights seem recurring complaints I've seen online) I personally loved how they took a game I really enjoyed, then fixed the combat/controls which I always had big issues with (lock on in the first game felt completely useless sometimes, Komaki was basically impossible to hit). This made combat way more fun for me. Plus you had all the content that usual newer Yakuza games had which helped flesh the game out quite a bit.

We are also getting some new details on RGG Online today:
https://gematsu.com/2018/08/yakuza-online-launches-in-2018-in-japan-pre-registration-now-available

Basically just that you can pre register for the game, some new artwork and some thin new plot details. I'm still really loving the artwork and will certainly give the game a try, but it probably won't be until Shin RGG that I spend 100+ hours with Ichiban!

There was this one boss during the funeral where it almost felt like the game was cheating but otherwise no problems, although I wish Majima showed up more often for me. Still dosen't make sense why Kiryu didn't murder him for what he tried at the batting cage.

Majima (as a gameplay mechanic) is a double edged sword. He does pop up quite a bit in certain chapters, but rewards you with insane amounts of XP that you can then funnel into powering yourself up loads. So its worth it in the end.
Shimano in chapter 3 though, that was a strange fight as he has way more health than he should have, even later bosses never have that problem.

Yeah a few people said Shimano was way more tame in the original they apparently either buffed him too much or just altered his move set to be infuriating. I find it fascinating how with a new coat of paint, Yakuza Kiwami stands great next to current AAA games, in my opinion at least. I expected it overall to be a lesser experience to Shenmue but, was pleasantly surprised to find out it has pros and cons compared to Shenmue, I guess I should have assumed that from the outset but I've always kinda heard it was a lesser Shenmue and I don't completely buy that now.

The two series are quite different really, but its funny that Shenmue is what got me to try Yakuza to begin with. I remember the first shots of the game being posted on this site funnily enough and knew I ha to give it a shot (I really missed Shenmue, and wanted something to fill that gap). Granted the series turned out quite different from Shenmue (Yakuza is probably closer to a 3D River City Ransom) but I loved the story and characters, and when 3 rolled around I really got into all the side stuff as well.

They're 2 different games; one's an Action/Adventure, the other is a Beat-'em-Up.

I didn't see much of a difference between the original and the Kiwami Shimano, however I did play it on release in Japan, in 2016, so maybe he was buffered after the fact.

Shadowman, thanks for the link; blocked at work, but when I get home, I'll see if non-Japanese can register :D

And yes, 3 will always be my favourite and I still deem it to be the 2nd best in the series; brilliantly-made, wonderful plot, great characters (both protagonists and antagonists), you can't go wrong.

Maybe this isn't the right place to say this but I just wanted to put it out there. I HATE Yakuza. Like a lot. Each game is just the same monotonous bullshit, re-used assets, none of these games could tell a good story to save their life(literally the same thing happens in each game too), the side missions are all the same fetchquest crap except for each games 2 or 3 that actually try to do something unique, the mini games are half baked but are presented as these substantial parts of the game, the combat sucks, etc etc. It took this series 8 god damn games(plus spinoffs) and until last god damn year to finally update its engine and move on from 2006 but when it finally did all the fans jumped ship and hate 6 so what the hell.

These things are nothing more than half assed beat-em-ups that nobody cared about until 0 got big online for some reason.

If I had to say 1 good thing, 3 was so bad it was actually funny and I was laughing the whole way through at how crap the cutscenes and gameplay were.

I also just want to say this isn't me being a "salty shenmue fan", I really don't think the 2 games should even be compared like they are all the time. Yakuza is in Japan, has fighting, and is made by Sega and thats where the similarities end.

I mostly agree. I played Yakuza and I kind of enjoy it until the 3rd one, despite Y3 was actually the only one with a decent gameplay.

Then I bought Y4, but I never been able to beat it beacuse it bored me too much.

I especially hated its sub quests: they were useless, painfully long and filled of nonsense dialogues. Actually Y3 has the same issue, but atleast it offers a brand new location to explore, while Y4 is enterely set in Kamurocho... which, at this point, it could be crowned as the most reclycled location ever in a videogame series.

Recently I bought Y0 on Steam, I will give it a try... it's been a long time since the last time I played a Yakuza game and I hope I could stand them again, as l still think there's somenthing good about them.

Anyway, I allways considered Kenzan and Ishin the most interesting games of this series, but unfortunately they're still stuck in Japan.
I also imported Kenzan for my PS3 and it was an amazing game, but unfortunately the amount of cutscene and dialogues overwhelmed me and I gave up, despite the fact I was using a pretty detailed guide... that game wasn't ment to be played in that poor way!

Kenzan's English patch is almost complete, and it seems fairly simple to CFW mod your PS3 these days. That's my goal, set that up and replay Kenzan in English (I've played it once before and absolutely loved it, top 3 in the series easily). Ishin is up there as well, its a great game especially if you've played Yakuza 1-5 (you appreciate all the guest appearances more that way).

Its pretty easy to register, there's an email option where you just need to enter your email address. Reading more about Online, seems that when you get certain cards/characters (based on dead characters) it unlocks additional "flashback" scenarios that take place while they were alive. I see this being dangerous to me personally, as I love this idea and could end up aiming for certain ones depending on how detailed the scenarios are.

i'm so glad that there is a substory skill in Kiwami 2 that shows you all the characters and spots
where a substory will be triggered. i really love the substories in the Yakuza games,
but i hate to check every street in every chapter again and again to see if there is something new. it's annoying.
and i don't like to use a guide because a lot of them are spoiling way too much.
i just want to see the icons on the ingame map. Kiwami 2 finally has that option.

The cult Side Story with Majima in Yakuza 0 was freaking great. Man that one was well done and thought out, it had its own termanology and greeting poses and when the whole room was chanting Sooreh-pipi for like the entire cut scene I was just laughing the whole time, and the dialogue options and Majimas perfect posing. Man that was a good one.

With Kiwami 2, many of my present favorite AV actresses are featured as hostesses, mostly Asuka Kirara, Aika, and Shoko Takahashi. I hope one day, the series manages to get Hitomi Tanaka lol.

so they ran out of money because of those actresses or why are the real soft erotic videos gone in Kiwami 2?
:grinning:

They got numerous celebrities in this game. They got the old school NJPW wrestlers such as Fujinami, Chono, Choshu, and Muto, and for the picture taking game, they got two of Japan's hottest models, Rina Hashimoto and Hikaru Aoyama.

But for every Yakuza game, they always tend to feature gravure models and/or AV actresses.

Kiwami 2 is out soon, a new survey has popped up asking some leading questions:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1-D...88BXJ4GTjuK_5CgU/viewform?edit_requested=true

One of which asks if we would be interested in playing the Yakuza games that never got a Western release in the past (so I'm guessing Ishin and Kenzan?) And if we'd be interested in more games by the development team like Fist of the North Star using the Yakuza engines to make more licensed games. All very exciting stuff!

Kenzan and Ishin in the new Dragon Engine with English text would be super awesome.
I would even pay full price for them. But if they dont see any point in making remakes for Yakuza 3-5
(because PS3 graphics are "good enough") i doubt that they will remake those games.
Of course i would buy 1080p 60 fps remasters too.

I'm playing Kiwami 2 since last Saturday and the technical side is way better than in Yakuza 6.

I feel the same.way about Yakuza 3 4 & 5, I'm content with them in a technical level but would like this to run smoother and be in 1080p on ps4. I did the survey and pleaded with them to localize the ports Japan are getting which at this rate is looking promising!

But getting yakuza 2 was the big one, now we can enjoy the games in hd in the ps3 onwards
