As long as Shenmue stays above 70, I'm happy. We were never ever going to see an above 80 average. This was a given from the day the game was announced.


Our next aim is to work towards securing the 4th game.

Hah! This is a great, fair review. And it bested Man of Medan. Nice!

Edit: Actually, I just noticed that Man of Medan is sitting at 69 on Metacritic. I thought it would have scored far higher.

Be warned people, god damn Jim Sterling did a Shenmue 3 video.

Isn't unethical for someone who is well known to have a vandetta against a frachise, to basically do a review of a game for said franchise?

It's such a bad hot take, I can't watch it, especially since in the opening secons, he trashes 1, and 2(seriously, anyone who doesnt love 2, has no right to even critique the Shenmue games, let alone expect people to take them seriously).

It's not a matter of ethics. He runs his own channel; he can do what he wants. It's shitty of him, though, to shit on an entire fan base and a small team who worked hard to make a game with limited resources, but that's the internet for you.

The thing is that Sterling is right on the button with 95% of his views (his views on loot boxes, scummy practices etc are very astute), it's just a shame he doesn't like Shenmue which is his perogative. However, he loves Deadly Premonition which is just as janky as Shenmue, so that doesn't make a lot of sense...

PS: Can anyone confirm if he does spoilers as I often watch his videos, but will avoid it if he does....

That's OK then. Yeah, it's such a shame he doesn't like it. But I have to remember his persona is to annoy people. Maybe it doesn't bother me much, because he usually goes after EA, Activision Blizzard, Bethesda etc and I don't care for their games, whereas Shenmue is very personal to us.

Jim Sterling's hate for Shenmue is weird. Okay, he doesn't have to like it, but in recent months he has been the one shouting for more mid-tier budget games that isn't targetting tens of millions of dollars and gamers.........well, Shenmue is one of those games, and Jim is criticising it's whole existence and basically willing it to die.

His whole attitude towards the series is just really odd. It's just a niche and harmless game made for fans that love the series, what the hell did it do to piss him off so much? He treats it with disdain more than he does a lot of games that are full of microtransactions, and from what I have seen over the years, he really hates microtransactions.

For somebody that keeps harping on about how great the old days were, you would think a game like Shenmue would be something he would be happy to see continue, even if he isn't a fan of the series himself.
 
Hardcore Gamer gave it a 70. It's on Metacritic. Cogconnected's review of 6/10 is now on Metacritic as well. Average is still at 71.
