On a side note, I predict the Xbox One will be discontinued within 6 months tops of the Series releases(if not on launch day or after Xmas even). Why compete with yourself at an already low price on the series S and $25 per month 0% interest financing options?

As for PS4 I predict it will go another 2 years maybe 3 like all consoles tend to do in previous generations. Basically when the second gen PS5 model hits.

I was a PC player for a long time. I had a PSX, PS2 and Xbox360
but i got my first very own PC in 2004 when WoW was brand new (i think it was even a beta phase before the real release)
and then i played pretty much nothing else than WoW.
Then later when i had to join the military i kept pretty much all of the money
and bought a brand new high end PC and then some time later
i upgraded to the most up to date hardware again.
I think between 2004 and 2015 i had about 3 or 4 completely new PCs and i upgraded one time.

I think the last upgrade was around the time when Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight came out
and then i reached a point where i was just super annoyed.
First off it was super complicated to get a GTX 980 (i think that was the most up to date card back then)
so i had to pay more than the suggested price to even get the card. (and i still had to wait for it)
The card came with Arkham Knight and that PC port was just a mess.
I had a brand new computer with the newest Intel I7 and this new GTX 980
and Arkham Knight ran with like 22-28 fps on mid-high settings in full HD.
Witcher 3 didnt run with stable 60 fps in high settings in full HD.
I also remember CPU bottleneck problems with Fallout 4 and also with Skyrim with the brand new PC i bought in 2011.
(it was a engine problem that they fixed in Skyrim some weeks after the release)
So after 10, 11, 12 years i just reached a point where i was like "why do i even buy all of this stuff?"
Like it was so obvious to me that the game companies dont care about my hardware at all
and if theres a problem they will tell me to wait for a patch or lower the settings or whatever.
I almost felt like the companies were making fun of me because i believed my hardware matters.

And that wasnt even the worst part, i'm talking about times where Red Dead Redemption, Yakuza, Nioh,
and tons of other stuff was 100% console exclusive. So my PC hardware actually didnt even matter most of the time
because these games were not on PC. I could just play RDR on my Xbox and it worked.
Thats why i decided to pretty much abandon the PC completely
and i bought a PS4 because i just wanted a machine where i can enter the disc and it works, done.

I dont care if the shadows of some branches look worse or if the water reflection isnt as good or whatever.
I hated that feeling on PC where you never know if your PC is the problem or if the game is the problem,
let Steam check the files ... seems good, lets chat with the customer support "try reastarting your computer" yeah thanks.
Then you look into the Steam board and theres some kind of war going on because group A says the port is terrible
but group B says its not, member A says the port doesnt work on his 3000€ PC at all,
member B says he can play the port in 4K 144 fps on his 500€ PC
and then you ask a simple question and someone insults you for no reason at all ...

I hated all of that. Thats why i'm only playing on PS4 since then.
And even if theres a game that has performance problems or whatever on PS4
i know for sure that its not my fault and its just how it is. I dont have to get a bad feeling
and start GPU and CPU benchmarks and temperature and driver tools
to check if my stupid 700€ card or 600€ CPU are still working as intended. I can play carefree.
I dont have to worry about anything and on top of that i can play all the (timed) exclusive games.
Thats why i switched from PC to console and i dont think i will ever go back.

On a side note, I predict the Xbox One will be discontinued within 6 months tops of the Series releases(if not on launch day or after Xmas even).

Microsoft already ceased production of the One X back in July. The One S will continue to be manufactured for the time being.

So instead of updating your pc every 5 years to play full, you choose to update your console every 5 years to enjoy massive experiences like Skyrim in PS3 in 28fps?

Alright I guess...?

What he is saying is that console gaming is hassle-free. On the PC you need to constantly tinker with things to get it working properly. With a console, it either works or it doesn't, there is no hassle with tinkering.

I am in the same boat as Tosh, I don't mind having a 'lesser' experience (which boils down to graphics for me) in favour of a more streamlined experience.

Also, if Tosh is upgrading his PC every 5 years then going by his numbers (1,300) just for a graphics card and CPU then PC gaming has a much higher initial outlay (although the games themselves are definitely cheaper).

As you said, there are videos on YouTube on how to build a PC. Can't remember the last time I read a manual of setting up a console. And this is coming from someone who is somewhat competent with computers.

@danielmann861

As much as I love The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War and so on; I still crave for those middle tier games that are more focused on fun than epic story telling. Overcooked and Ratchet and Clank were such a breath of fresh air to play but they are far and few between. I used to walk into video game stores and have no idea what I was looking for and find games I never heard of based on the box art, having a cooperative mode or just looking like fun.

The variety of games I used to play was massive as well. I used to buy NHL, NFL and NBA games but EA and their greed forced 2K to discontinue everything but the NBA series and then NBA 2K became unashamedly more interested in implementing microtransactions than creating a game that's fun to play. Hell, BioWare was always an exciting developer and EA, as predicted, absolutely destroyed them so again, another generation and not a single BioWare game purchased.

I loved wrestling games and it was an annual purchase for myself and my family. Never got one for this generation as they turned into (poorly attempted) simulators with no focus on the fun factor. Used to love Ubisoft until every game became open world and just added to open world fatigue. Loved the original Splinter Cell games but Ubisoft can't figure out how to make it an open world game with microtransactions so it hasn't been made. Ghost Recon is just in such a sad state compared to where it originally was and the GRAW series.

The problem is it seems games are either AAA or the innovative smaller games don't have the budget to make something that is good and polished at the same time. For example, I liked a game called Aragami. Reminded my brother and I of Tenchu and playing that cooperatively. Good game but technically underwhelming. You can tell it was made by passionate gamers and not influenced by corporate cash grabs but at the same time it definitely could do with more financial backing. I've even made the decision not to buy a football game this year and probably will be the same for next year unless there is a major improvement to graphics, gameplay or features.

There's a particular memory I have that sums up what I feel is wrong about modern gaming. Thinking back to the original Halo, it's a game that narratively is a single player game. However, they added co-op and a second Master Chief in the story mode. Made no sense from a narrative stand point but they added it in because they could and it was the fun thing to do. Now, we don't even get cheat codes because of Achievements and Trophies.

Largely agree.

My problem is just how samey everything has become. You look at Sony's first party line up this generation and it all just feels very samey with no diversity in terms of game design.

This gen became one of lets all copy the Ubisoft Open World formula (which in itself is derivative of the GTA 3 blue print that everyone has been copying ever since PS2) and Sony's exclusives really played into that. Yes, they all tell different stories, but the open world design is largely the same between them. As much as I enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima and the things it did, it was still just another check list game. As much as I enjoyed Days Gone, again, still just a Ubisoft inspired check list game. Same thing with Spider-man.

Yes, these games have great stories but I just feel like that isn't enough for me anymore when gameplay remains stagnant. The gameplay loop hasn't really evolved at all and instead I feel like its becoming more and more of a chore to see some of these games through because they're more concerned with just filling a generic map with stuff to do instead of really focusing in and doing something new with the formula.

And I get it, they play it safe largely because these games are costing more and more to make. People are whining about the increase in game prices, but the reality is that this has been a LONG time coming. The price tag to make these AAA games that the audience are clamouring (because they still sell well) is only gonna keep going up and it's only cost you more.

Not just in terms of literal cost, but I also fear in terms of creativity as everything is just gonna keep getting more and more samey.

I guess you could say the Indie scene is where the brave and bold ideas come flowing, but even then, I find myself disillusioned with the Indie scene. It's either full of people making 8 bit pixel art retro games or art students who think they've got something deep to say because they failed film school and couldn't become film directors. And that's all well and good but it comes at the cost of fun. I don't want to be lectured to by some art student because they can't understand the difference between exploring themes and being completely didactic.

There's those times where I just crave the simple thrill of pretending to be a (Crazy) Taxi driver taking people from place to place. Or crave a game like Jet Set Radio where it's just pure fun. Or crave a stupid little concept like playing as an Alien looking to take over the world (Destroy All Humans)

I miss fun in gaming. I miss that time where game creators were pushing the boundaries and just having fun instead of getting so far up their own asses to tell a cinematic story. I miss evolution in game play. I noticed this while playing The Last of Us Part II...that it was one of the most miserable experiences I've had playing a game and a wake up call that I'm so fucking tired of where this medium is nowadays.

So am I literally the only one here who liked LoU2? 😅

You can like it if you like. That's all well and good.

But speaking personally, I think it was one of the most miserable experiences I've ever had playing a game where I almost hated every last thing about it. And the more I think about it, the more I think it completely misunderstood what it was people liked about the first game and traded it in for a CW drama with bland shallow and unlikable characters straight out of a CW drama that is masquerading as something "deep"

Misery porn through and through.

And surprise, surprise, critics ate it up.

That's just my personal opinion though. I really hated that game and the more I think about it, the more I hate it and the more it reminds me about the things I sort of dislike in modern day gaming.

But anyways....

I pre ordered a PS5 on Amazon yesterday.

I wasn't going to but then it kind of just got the better of me. I figure I'm gonna buy one anyways so might as well just do it now and get it out of the way.

Went with the disc drive version. Couldn't pull the trigger on digital only. I'd still like the option of digital or disc. That and Japanese imports. Got to get those Japanese Yakuza releases.

What's "CW" ?

What's "CW" ?

CW is a network television station in America. It plays host to a bunch of shitty melodramatic teenage drama shows. Hence my comparison. The characters in TLOU2 felt like they were ripped out of any bland made for CW drama.

For the first time, I actually don't think I'm going to bother this generation, at least not for a few years. When I do, I'll probably opt for the PS5 when it's gone down in price or has a Pro/slim model.

Been drifting more towards PC gaming over the past year or so, anyway, so going to invest in beefing up my rig.

I'm not sure how GAME got this info but they have charts on how games will be operation during the curren to next gen transition:

It seems it won't have Series X enhancements at launch?
