Random Shenmue III Thoughts

In another Video there was also a glimpse of shenmue but I forgot which. Kind of coincidential
I think so too! If I recall it correctly it was on a magazine. Also can't remember the exact episode tho. It's allways nice to see.
Shenmue really was a bid deal back then.
Here in my city, (Felgueiras Portugal) there was a super-cool video game and music store called TOPMUSIC and as you walked in, there was a giant Shenmue decal occupying the whole glass door it should be almost 1,5 metters tall!
I loved tho see that. Even today I enjoy remembering it.

Just finished a replay of Shenmue I (first time since 2000. Still so good) and after the most recent trailer, I actually think I like Ryo’s Shenmue III model more than the Shenmue I and II models.

Really want nothing but the best for this game. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a game to “not suck” as much as Shenmue III lol. There’s been so much unnecessary hate with the Shenmue series and it’d be nice to have another entry to be proud of. I hope they can pull it off.

Judgement may get delayed in the West due to one of the featured actors being accused of cocaine use...

...let's hope it doesn't get delayed by 2 months.

I read about that. Well, I read the game has been pulled from sale in Japan. I don't understand why they did that though and the article I read didn't mention there being a possibility of a Western delay. Why should there be one?

Can I also ask, what's the big fucking deal? Actors get caught taking cocaine all the time. Who gives a shit? I'm shocked anyone cares and that Sega had to pull the game from sale.

Edit: Googled it. So Japan have backwards views on drugs. Wow. If that affects the Western release then fuck Sega.

Oh I doubt it will affect Shenmue 3 sales or launch within the same month, I just want to play the damn game and don't want to have wait longer for dumbass political reasons.

I also do not think that this would affect the sales. Both titles are more niche games and not very attractive to the general public. They are both games for enthusiasts and fans. These People will buy both games sooner ar later anyway. Allthought I got the japanese Version I really want a westen release of the game. I Need a Version of the game where i actually understand the Story.

I am a Student of the japanese language but it will take many many years until I am good enough to really understand a game completly in Japanese. So a western release is essential for me to enjoy the game to the fulliest.

Sega did make an official statement about Judgment's western release, they said they havent decided yet what they are going to do.

Tbh, it doesn't look good. They will have to record all of his lines, and since he is a major character it will be a lot and take a long time, also he did a lot of motion capture too and they may want to replace that data. Anyway, it will be very costly to fix this situation, since they have to recast and pay another voice actor, and if the character's 3d model features were based on the actor then they will have to remake that character model, especially if they used expensive facial capture software.

Outlook isnt good. They either delay it for months and pay a lot of money to fix everything or they may just decide to cut their losses and cancel the western release.

First Shenmue III dream last night; the new and honestly perfect Lan Di was there (cool) killing off some kids (not cool) in the courtyard of the hospital I work in before chasing me up a tree (wtf?). Maybe my brain is scared that the game will be too much to handle ?

They already went through something similar during Yakuza PS3 wra, causing major delays and recasts. Sega also sometimes make really strange choices that do not make any sense. Anyway, as much as I want the game I am not getting my hopes up.

random question. something ive been wondering.. at a guess how much would it have cost to create s3 using dreamcast graphics in 2019?

I don't think anybody could accurately answer, but it wouldn't have been an enormous cost saver in my view.

Here's my logic:

Using the original engine/code/systems to develop the first two games would have probably been a non-starter. Ys Net would have to spend weeks or months even getting it all to run, let alone dummying out/emulating the stuff that hooked into/relied on Dreamcast hardware, and even then the end result would be significantly inefficient compared to a modern engine. We know from D3T's experience with the original engine that there would have been numerous, significant difficulties doing this.

If they were to still use UE4 but decided to really go for a retro-Dreamcast art style, they'd still need time and research into the engine to figure out how to make that work. Impossible to know how long it'd take to get it right, or right enough. The end result would still be something inferior to what could be achieved by playing to the engine/modern hardware's strengths, and I'm not sure it would shield the game from graphical criticisms all the same.

In either case there's also not much room for asset reuse either.

I actually think Dreamcast engine would have ended up costing significantly more money. It's true that even though they used their own tools, back then, they still used a lot of middleware which is either these days extremely hard to obtain, caught in legal limbo, and or just not compatible with modern machines. So, they likely would have to develop on old hardware, using old expensive tools, use old yet more expensive motion capture software, and hardware, because the new, cheaper tools likely aren't compatible with their older tools, they have to use expensive and hard to obtain 3d modeling and CAD software, when they have to create all the new towns and characters. They would also have to upgrade the engine, and after everything theyd have to port it back to pc and ps4, which as you could see they had problems with porting the original 2 games already. There is just no way it would have been cheaper to create the 3rd game on the dreamcast engines and hardware.

In fact, I am willing to bet we would not be getting even half of the content we are now getting if they did develop it as a dreamcast game then ported it to modern machines.

Not to mention that, even tho the game would please some of the most nostalgic fans, it would for sure be criticized heavily for being a 3 generations ago game lol
Tha't just not feasable.
It's way better they way they are doing it now.
