Random Shenmue Thoughts

I've been wanting to do something creative regarding Shenmue for a while now (I started a 2D fan game but don't have the time right now) and I love maps, especially nicely designed, detailed maps...which got me thinking, I could make a series of stylish maps covering areas from the game, featuring points of interest (even the forklift routes at the harbour). At a minimum, they'd be cool desktop backgrounds, but I could also design them for print if people liked them.

I don't know if any really slick Shenmue maps exist? I loved the interactive Flash map that was on here back in the day that kinda lives on in the Suka Pass app, but I'm talking traditional 2D maps.

Started my new playthrough today and in S1 I want to get the Tomato store raffle prizes and in S2 I want all the AM2 Gatcha and unlock the duck races. How hard is the birthday scene to unlock?

I was testing ChatGpt out by asking for strategies on how to beat Chai in the arcade and I exposed ChatGPT as a fraud. It advised me to use counter elbow assault...IMG_8447.jpegIMG_8446.jpeg

If anyone just so happens to have all the route maps and harbour map textures on-hand, please send my way 🙏 I can always poke around some let's plays for screens, but I'd like to get the actual textures if possible...

So I recall you can save scum a gambling game and that's the only cash you need to meet Ren in S2. How much would I need max so I can meet Ren and you also need money later I believe

For some reason I always go for 11K. That seems far more than enough but I’m not a completist. Quick enough to do anyway.

Perhaps the maps featured in the Official Shenmue Perfect Guide will be suitable?

Here's a link to a PDF of the guide. The maps can be found on pages 6-11.

Hope this helps.

Thank you!

Maybe this is well-known but, unless I'm missing something, the in-game map places the Old Warehouse District in the wrong place...? It puts the entrance and guard post south of Warehouse 18, whereas the Versus guide has it in the correct spot...

I believe you're both right and wrong. The map featured in the Versus guide has the Old Warehouse District in the correct place, whereas the in-game map doesn't actually feature the Old Warehouse District at all. I can only assume this is because, where lore is concerned, the local authority updated the map to remove the Old Warehouse District once it was decommissioned, because it was no longer necessary to be featured on there.

The encircled area, I believe, is actually the warehouse district behind Warehouse 18, the entrance to which can be seen here:

This same entrance can just about be seen on the map from the Versus guide:

In my opinion, the reason for the disparity is that, while the in-game map is correct lore-wise, the map from the Versus guide is reflective of the gameplay.

I think, anyway.

Ahhh, thanks! I thought this could be the case, but I initially dismissed it because the layout of the second off-limits area is so similar to the Old Warehouse District. For this to be true, there would have to be two plots right next to each other with the same layout which, I guess, is possible 🤷‍♂️

Having now looked at a bunch of maps, I think the Shenmue passport map is probably the most accurate, as it even has the buildings in the off-limits area: https://shenmuedojo.com/media/shenmue-passport/shenmue-passport-maps/

I was looking for my old Shenmue vector files -- I knew I'd vectorised the English and Japanese logos, as well as one of the mirrors long ago, and didn't want to have to redo them again :p -- and I came across this old website I designed in 2010 to house an article I was writing...

If you had Flash installed, the logo would spin around 😁 And you can hide the release info because I was learning JS - no other reason!

As you can see, it wasn't finished, with notes towards the end on what I should write about next. The 'next page' button lights up green on hover. I like the footer, though! Websites were more fun back then.

Congrats! Which one(s) gave you the most trouble?
I dont think i struggled that much with any trophy in particular,it was more like the time investment since i missed a few awards in both games i had to go through a check list and do some special events (like helping the old lady) and complete a few tasks (i didnt bother that much with arm wrestling for example in shenmue 2 and had no idea where the 4th arcade game was) . But i if i had to pick a single one i would have to probably say getting enough gacha toys in shenmue 1 since i dont typically go for those that much since i usually prefer the tapes instead (shenmue 1 music to me is 10/10 and i listen to it on repeat many times) and i got a LOT of repeated capsule toys. Thanks for asking, cheers.

Edit: Appreciate the PDF and great discussion guys!
