Random Shenmue Thoughts

I did read that Sega were relatively happy with the performance so I'd suggest that 300k figure is higher.

Yeah I heard that they were relatively happy as well, I thought the sales would have to crack a million at least. If Sega satisfied that's all that counts. Do you know what kind of ballpark range Shenmue 3 would need to sell in order to be worthy of sequel?

Cedric said way back (2017 I think) they wanted to do 1 million copies. Personally i think this is unrealistic.

I'd say 500-600k plus would do it. That would be in line with the more recent Yakuza games.

I was thinking that 1 million copies would be feasible because of the cost of the game and available PS4 units to play it on. On Kickstarter you could get a copy for $29.00 but now I see they are charging $60.00. IMO this is a bad decision $40.00 might have been better. You can also get more money for DLC as well to gain more money. With Shenmue 1&2 selling that low maybe 1 million is unrealistic. IMO

Its difficult but with the right marketing behind it the game could do it.

They have to get the game to appeal to a wider audience as a part of it. I could be wrong with the collectors editions selling out virtually everywhere already and Shenmue III holding a good position in amazon sales currently.

Can someone help me identify this Shenmue watch? It looks like the same watch that was offered on the 5,000 dollar reward tier Shenmue 3 Kickstarter. I know there are different variations when it comes to the Timex watches.

Shenmue got a segment in Gameranx's "10 Things Only DREAMCAST Owners Will Remember":
(video timestamped, just click play)

I think Falcon was pretty fair in his praises and criticisms of the game. An overall positive segment which is nice to see!

^ That's a really cool looking cap. I wonder if any Dojo member from UK would kindly do that for me, sending it to Canada?
*Never mind, I think I got myself covered. Thanks anyway.

This will almost certainly never happen but it would be dope if Yu Suzuki made a game where you play as Iwao. It would be a prequel setting up Shenmue. I'm allowed to dream???

If the series was popular enough, I could see a potential prequel being made. However, getting the main story out is difficult enough. Perhaps there will be playable flashbacks as Iwao in Shenmue 3 or beyond.

Here's another totally obsurd detail that only Shenmue can pull off.

If you happen to run into Joy at night, the cutscene will not have any pedestrians and Joy won't yell "get outta my way" either.
It's legit hard to spend this much time around the dock so this is actually really well hidden. Didn't find this myself but did only read about it by accident.

Holy shit! I never knew this, as you say the chances of the player not seeing that scene until night are quite slim, but that’s downright insane attention to detail...

I think it would be so fascinating to see some of the planning documents they used and learn how they designed such rare situations to occur.

If Sega ever needs to liquidate stuff I'm going after the shenmue vault. Sega's most prized treasures...Shenmue complete design docs. Sega won't compile a true 100% guide so here's hoping a rich fan(s) might as well do it for them.

I'm not sure how many units the Yakuza games sell but if Shenmue 3 sells 1 million copies do you think that will be enough for Sega to put some skin in the game?

I think 1 million ensures that the franchise is safe for future games.

Something like 2 million+ and then Sega jumps back on the bandwagon.

JMO, but that's how I think it goes.
