Very interesting points. To me this classic fps are special because they give you the feeling to be one man army. Just blasting through the hords of enemies was great fun back then and is still great fun now. These games are simple and it is just about skills and reflexes. There were also quite interactive for their time with destructable environments or even quite beliable NPCS like in Half Life for exampel. Well the guards and scientists had some problems of course but they still worked quit well compared to horrible AI of Natalia in Goldeneye 64 one year before Half Life came out.

It also can be quite fun to play a modern shooter with rpg elements sometimes. I like the Metro games somehow.

But nothing beats Half Life, the Old Medal of Honor Games, Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem 3d.
I miss the freshness of that era of FPS too. The last 16 years has just been military gorefest in some form or another mostly outside of repetitive boring Halo games and the 2 newer Doom games, which are ok for newer fps, but they're instantly forgettable next to the originals.

After enjoying many great 2d titles like Doom,Duke Nukem, Hexen 1, Blood and the original Shadow Warrior I loved when Quake 2 came out and changed the game with graphics, soundtrack with actual music rather than midi files and the fast pace action, then Half-Life came out and gave this genre a story driven complex style which instantly became my favorite fps at that time. Even though I don't play any of them anymore all of these fps games still hold up today for me personally in a way that most other retro games don't.

Goldeneye 64 was amazing for its time and it was a multi-player experience during a time when multi-player could be enjoyed at home. I also recommend Turok 1 and 2 for N64 they were great and aged well. They're actually available on Switch and Xbox One I believe. Turok 3 is ok if you can get it cheap, skip all ps2/ps3 Turoks.

Since I don't like RPG titles I can't comment on Metro, but I can suggest S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl and even more so Boiling Point both on PC for rpg-ish FPS games that I thought were good.

Another overhyped modern fps franchise that was garbage worse than Crysis was FEAR. Forgot about that, very disappointing. Another one that I thought was ok for a newer franchise was the Bioshock games, specifically Infinite. Not worth going out of the way to play, but they were fresh for the newer gens in a world of Battlefield Halo and CoD.

I pretty much liked all of the fps back then to some degree or another but ny favorite FPS games of the pre-2005 era would be: Half-Life, Quake 2, Doom 2, Blood, Shadow Warrior original, Duke Nukem 3D, Half Life 2, Goldeneye 64, Hexen 1, Turok 1, Turok 2, No One Lives Forever, Far Cry 1. I'd recommend any and all of those. For 2005 and newer I don't really love any fps so far, but I'd probably have to say the only ones that stand out truly are Far Cry 3, Far Cry 5, Far Cry Primal and 6 looks good too. 4 and New Dawn are ok too, FC 2 is the only one I didn't like at all.

For 2D I'd highly recommend playing Hexen 1, Blood and Shadow Warrior from the 1990s(much better than the remakes) if you haven't already, they're great and on par with Doom 2 and Duke Nukem 3D. Another two that are really good as well in 3D is No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 and SiN. SiN was highly underrated.

Yeah Hexen, Blood and Shadow Warrior or on my to play list as well. They look interesting and fun to play.

The first Sin is indeed a great game. Have finished ita few month ago. it is indeed a underated Shooter.

No one Lives Forever 1 is a great game too. The 60s flair and the humor is just awesome. It also still looks quite nice I have to say.

I have not played No ones lives forever 2 yet but I want to give it a try eventually as well for sure.

I cannot comment on Stalker yet. I know it of course but never played it yet. Maybe I give it try. same goes for Boiling Point. Never have heard about that game but it looks quite funny according to the youtube footage. I like the island tropical flair.

I have never been a big fan of the Far Cry games. i just played 1 and that was not a bad game there was nothing unique about it besides the tech. It was more like a tech Demo for the Cry Engine. Have never played any other game of the series.

The same goes for Crysis. The best shooter of the arly 2000s up to 2005 will always be Half Life 2. That game is still a master piece.

Medal of Honor Pacific Assault was als quite decent. Had a great atmosphere. But the best Medal of Honor for the PC will always be Allied Assault for me.

I know I threw a bunch of FPS suggestions towards you, but I have a few others that are must play titles if you have not already: Postal 2, Postal 2 Apocalypse Weekend expansion and Postal 2 Paradise Lost expansion is a must play. If you haven't already, check that out on YouTube if you thought the comedic points of Boiling Point and No One Lives Forever were great. In fact, The Postal 2 Collection with the base game and both expansion packs is on a deep sale on Steam right this moment for $1.55 so around 1.33 Euros for all 3 games. The first portal is a bad skyview 3rd person title, the 3rd postal is trash and wasn't made by the original studio, the 4th Postal I have yet to play but fully plan to check it out when its on a deep sale. Another one I recommend that is a must play is Kingpin: Life of Crime from 1999. I think it got a remaster recently? And of course the first Unreal game from 1998 is great. All sequels to Unreal were not very good but the first was a classic.

Far Cry 3 and 5 are the best for conventional shooters within that franchise of the later entries, they have an interesting story that surpasses the first one, but I thought the gameplay was better on the original. Far Cry Primal you may enjoy in that its unique, it takes place in caveman era so theres no guns and characters cannot communicate through language as they don't speak any language just gestures and only primal weaponry. There's wooly mammoths and wolves that are the size of lions, its interesting and one of a kind. If you don't bother with any of the other FC games, I'd at least say don't miss out on Primal if you can get it for under $10.

Half-Life 2 was a great great game, I really enjoyed it and I believe personally it was the last amazing FPS game to ever release. 2004 was a sad year for FPS because Far Cry 1 was the last fresh innovative fps and Half-Life 2 was the last proper title from that era. I personally like Half-Life 1 better, but 2 is great as well. There's something off about Doom 2016, Doom Eternal, Duke Nukem Forever, Shadow Warrior remake and Shadow Warrior 2. None of them are awful and all of them are functionally playable, but for some reason the mystique and fun factor from the older titles is gone, regardless of the better graphics.

I'm not big on any conventional war game based on real life events during the last 150 years, but I did enjoy Medal of Honor on PS1 and I have tried a few on PS2 and can appreciate what they did with them. I think they stand far ahead of CoD or Battlefield, and they were out at a time long before the industry was pumping people full of this genre as a recruitment marketing tool. Remember Americas Army in 2003? The US Military literally using the online rankings with that free title to recruit people for real life combat who are tactical and able to kill well in the game.

Thanks again for the further tipps. Yeas Unreal is indeed a great classic. I still like it a lot. Have not played Unreal 2 yet but I have also heard that is not as great as the orginal is. Postal is another series that I want to check out for sure.

I have heard about Kingpin and want to check it out . Not sure yet if it is going to be orginal or the upcoming remaster.

Another great shooter I would recommend is the original XIII not the remake. The remake is horrible but the original still looks great (due to the unique cell shading graphic) and it also plays very well. It is pity that we never going to get a sequel due to bad sale numbers.

Another shooter of the 90s I really liked and I did not mention yet are the Jedi Knight games. Jedi Knight and Jedi Knight 2 are reall masterpieces. The first game in the series Dark Forces is not bad either but it plames a bit lame compared to the later games in the series because you do not have force powers and a Light Saber. I would recommend these games if you are not a total Star Wars Hater. For me as a SW Fan I really like them.

I had Unreal 2 back in 2005-ish and it was ok, I mean if you can get it for $5 or so it's not bad, but I'd skip it if you have to pay a serious amount for it. If you don't play it, you're not missing anything. Unreal 2 falls into the category of many of the FPS sequels in that era that weren't really good but weren't bad either they were average. The same can be said about Hexen 2 and Blood 2.

Lol I was actually going to recommend XIII to you! I haven't bothered with the remake since I don't get into newer FPS titles usually, but the original was really underrated and cool for its time as well. It's still probably the best game I've played with cel shaded graphics outside of Jet Grind Radio.

I'm not a Star Wars fan in any capacity, but I do not hate it either and I actually considered recommending Dark Forces to you if you like SW, I liked that one in the 90s even though I wasn't a fan of the game. If you like outer space type FPS that feels similar to Star Wars be sure to check out the underrated Rebel Moon Rising from 1997, another hidden treat.

Had finally gotten the OLED Switch and can’t wait to transfer everything from my V.2 Switch. You can tell which will remain docked. 😂

I also got Guardians of the galaxy R-Type Final 2 and Ori collection. I also completed my monster hunter rise amiibo collection and now all I need is Tsukino from stories 2.

Digital games I think I got :
Yakuza 0 digital
Yakuza kiwami 2 digital
( physical have but steelbook and sealed and keeping it that way I have a copy of 0 too but the price of digital was too good to pass up for those two.)

Spiritfarer is this cozy little game where you meet a bunch of quirky friends and sail across an ocean full of fun islands with them to help them out. Get to cook and farm and craft, not very stressful, just relaxing and some pretty fun platforming. Amazing music and art style. Highly recommend it.

But yeah the shirt is a lot better than I thought it looked online too.

Xbox games on backwards compatibility!xboxbacknewghaes.JPG
I know NieR recently got a remaster but I am damn stoked that the original is now going to be available! Also TimeSplitters 3!!! I've been a PlayStation gamer all my life but Xbox's dedication to backwards compatibility is really winning me over now.

The backwards compatibility expansion today has some amazing titles added. There's only 3 others that come to mind right now that I wish they would have added: Mortal Kombat Armageddon, Deception & Deadly Alliance.

Oh there will always be titles we can hope for (Burnout 3 Takedown, Shadow Of Memories, Crash Twinsanity- to name a just a few I would like!) But I highly encourage this! The biggest problem I have in my collection is PS2 games. I have 250+ titles boxed in storage as I don't have a good way to play them on a HDTV. Then PS3, the console is so unbarely slow to navigate on - Also, the controllers are hard to come by nowadays so I find myself trying to avoid the console as much as possible these days. Hence why getting the Xbox One X recently has been a great benefit, so I am overjoyed to see more games I like now being accessible.

I raided local stores this morning and gathered a few I've been after:

I'm hoping the Mortal Kombat listing on the store has the Komplete Edition content, installing it now to check.

I also downloaded Gunvalkyaire for the original Xbox - a phsyical Edition of that was already pricey and now I beat it will sore so £8.39 isn't too much of a sting. Looks stunning, the upgrades made to the original Xbox titles are impressive, sadly they don't seem to bother increasing the resolution with most 360 games - only a select few like the Final Fantasy XIII games or Gears of War etc.

Mortal Kombat 2011 is the one I'm the most interested in playing here. I've been messing with it on Steam for a few years and don't enjoy having to go to my laptop to game. I have read that MK9 Komplete Edition currently does not have the DLC, but some of them (minus Skarlet) do work in the downloads. I have an Xbox One X in my inventory currently so I can test a few discs from my inventory (DOA 1,2,3 and 4) but personally I am 100% digital with my Xbox Series so for me I'm disappointed because I would like to buy MK9 digitally from the Xbox store but its not available, I hope they change that. Mortal Kombat vs DC, which isn't really a good game is also not available digital but is disc backwards compatible. I will most likely buy DOA 3 digitally and possibly DOA 2 as well.

There's nothing wrong with going from PlayStation to Xbox during any console generation I would consider that an upgrade across the board ;)

I got Star Knight of the Republic 2 the Sith lords for "free". I am a premium user of the german pc gaming Mag Gamestar website and they give a away a "free" game every month. This time the free game was Kotor 2. Although being a Star Wars fan for decades I have never played the Kotor games . So far I think it is really cool and the series deserves their good reputation.

Sadly it doesn't include the DLC - still a much better way to play it. Oh & DOA2U looks stunning! It's my favourite DOA game so I was thrilled not to see a jaggie in sight!

EDIT - Warner Bros put out a statement on Twit' and it's been updated!

Ed Boon has been notified on Twitter, not that it'll get anything done but people are bugging him on his twitter about the MK9 Komplete DLC issues. I just bought a digital copy of DOA 3, which is the only one I really liked a lot before 5 and 6, I can't wait to see what it looks like on Xbox Series. I may pick up 2 when it goes on sale. Undecided about 4 because as much as the graphics were nice, even on the 360 the gameplay was ridiculously hard compared to the other titles. As for DOA 1, that's a hard pass from me lol..not interested in mid-90s fighting games graphics and physics anymore.

DOA 3 looks really good on Xbox Series. The controls feel really good for a 20 year old game too. It's actually playable on the current gen console.

DOA3.jpgSC6.jpg

Picked up Dead or Alive 3 on Xbox Series with the new original Xbox/360 backwards compatibility games released earlier this week mainly to check out the graphical enhancements. DOA 3 looks really nice. I wanted Mortal Kombat 9 but its not available in the digital store at this time. Not a huge SoulCalibur fan in general but SC 6 was on sale for $9 so that's reasonable.

Picked up the newly released BloodRayne 1 ReVamped & BloodRayne 2 ReVamped too. Not sure if these have aged well since 20 years ago, but we'll see.
