Shenmue III comes to GOG!

That's not how it works.
Developpers and publishers can request Steam keys at will and at no cost. If they don't offer it, it's a conscious decision by the pub/dev.

There's no negociation to have here. It was the case when it was about giving out keys while the game isn't available on the platform. Not when it releases there.

So there's no "they could flat out say no" case.
Well they would imply otherwise.

YSNET via their update, I'd have to dig it out.

Wasn't that Deep Silver saying so ?
Because the process to request key on Steam is basically free and nearly limitless.
People who backed Outer Wilds on Fig, a game that became Epic exclusive, got their steam key when the game released on Steam.
Griftland, a game that wasn't crowdfunded, gave Steam keys to the people who got the game on Epic store when it was exclusive, when the game released on Steam.
There's a lot of crowdfunded games in that case. Shenmue III would be a weird exception to the point it's obviously a conscious decision from deep silver, considering the steam key policy AND the precedents.

I totally expect the game to make it to the headlines again... by not giving steam keys to backer despite waiting a year later. Even despite that, I don't expect the game to get a new surge in sales. Word of mouth wasn't too hot and neither was thecritical reception.
It might not get a huge surge of sales, but I'm sure if it launches at the right price it'll pick up enough sales. Shenmue 1 & 2 didn't set the Steam sales charts on fire either, and there was little negativity about those ports. What more can you expect for a game that's a year old?

A timely Shenmue IV announcement around launch would be amazing.

Here's the update

As negotiations with Valve are ongoing, we are not able to make a firm commitment at this point concerning the availability of the Steam keys.
Requests for Steam keys will be accepted through the survey, however, there is the possibility that Steam keys will ultimately not be distributed depending on negotiations with Valve. An announcement will be posted in the updates with the outcome of the negotiations.
We apologize for this revision to the previously stated PC option.

I can only answer with :doubt: about that statement. It sounds more like a statement to cover their ass in case Deep Silver or YsNet decide to play greedy here. There is no negociations to generate steam keys. It's a simple request form and is granted in 99.9% of cases. 0.1% being some scammers abusing the key generation. It's actually fairly well documented in the Steamworks docs.

The reason it didn't happen before might have been that the game wasn't available on Steam yet. And the only reason it couldn't happen now is if the game isn't accepted for a Steam release... which isn't the case.

The good thing is that we might have some estimates based on the concurrent user numbers and numbers of reviews.
As for people worrying about review bombing: You cant review the game if you don't own it.

Sony has not shared any of Death Stranding sales numbers other than saying "It sold well."

But, it's kinda funny that the internet considers that game as a success and considers Shenmue 3 as a "failure".(They even claim that Death Stranding getting a steam version is due to this that it was a success.)

Because it's Kojima, everyone laps it up lol

There is also one thing.
if Shenmue 3 goes to steam exactly a year after it's original release, that means November 19th.
That means releaseng the same day as... guess what?!.... CyberPunk 2077!!
Jeesusss... couldn't been worse xD
They sould delay it 3 or 4 weeks.

That and also that the game had fairly decent numbers from the estimates. Disappointing sales and lot of sales isn't incompatible. Because expectations were likely far higher.

Wont change much. They could release it now, on the same day as Cyberpunk or in 2021, the potential audiences aren't overlapping. And on top of that, Shenmue III didn't generate much positivity following release. I would be surprised if the game exceeded 1000 concurrent users at launch.

yes. but it's allways better to release in a more calm day/week than release the game in the exact same day as the (possibly) biggest release of the year. It's logic.

Lmao, Yeah, and whenever anyone criticize it he/she will get these responses:
"This game isn't for everyone !"
"Go play your Fortnite/COD."
"It's a new genre."(Even though Truck Sim created delivary sim games much sooner.)
"At least it's original unlike other games of this time."(Which is pure BS)
"It's ART, you can't understand it."
