I’m glad Shenmue II mixes them up a bit

In theory...yes. In practice...you will probably fail and then try to remember the button combination so you have a better chance of pulling it off next time because the window of time is so small. That's how a lot of them went for me my first time through (and judging by streams, a lot of other people).

CQTEs time window is not small when you figure out you can input the buttons BEFORE the button instruction ends.
It is Shenmue. Game expects you to experiment the gameplay further, like the Airing the books minigame where you can actually succeed pretty fast with a good balance between pace and walking.

I always run full speed when carrying books. The QTEs are easy enough to manage...
