An annoucement about shenmue is coming ?

It doesn't have to be "to continue" the story... it could be an adaption that retells and expands upon the existing story.

Edit: Or it could be something that adds to the lore, by focusing on Iwao's history or other character's stories and histories.
If that comes to be the case I believe it would angry a lot of the fan base since Shenmue 3 was generally criticized by its lack of story progression.

Let's see how this plays out.

Episodic sounds plausible. Maybe the filler for the cliff temple? Iwao's journey? Baisha?

Colour me interested.

I'm gonna go with episodic content.
I was actually fine with this from the start when we thought S4 could end up being dlc for S3. Episodic would work just as well IMO.

Maybe it's the other 29 hours and 55 minutes of story progression that Shenmue 3 was missing??

What if it's Shenmue Online again *shivers*

In all seriousness, episodic releases would be ideal. They also would cut down on costs for a game franchise that doesn't tend to turn a big profit. As much as going to the store every 20 years to pick up a new disc based Shenmue game is a rush, it's not practical as discs are trending on their way out altogether anyway.

They will have to handle this carefully.

If it's an onward progression from the end of Shenmue III but not a clearly defined part of what could be a Shenmue 4 there will be people baying for blood asking why it wasn't included in the main game.

If it's an episode of Shenmue 4 (or what Shenmue 4 is) then people might be more accepting.

If it's playing Iwao's background in the lead-up this would be a good call for all of us. We don't really know what happened and it would serve as context for all the games.

Anything else is anyones guess, if it is indeed anything. We've had it said to the staff that DLC isn't planned for Shenmue III. So based on that assumption it has to be something seperate.

I don't think it will be anything Netflix or Manga related (but who knows?...maybe manga more so than Netflix related if that were the case).

VR? Maybe. I mean Suzuki has expressed his interest in VR before.

DLC/Episodic? Well if it isn't Shenmue IV then this is the only other thing I could think it would be.

To be fair, the DLC for III really just seemed like stuff that was supposed to be in the main game but ripped out by Deep Silver...or at least I got the feeling that stuff felt like it should have been in the main game. So maybe they have been working on something on the side to fill in a bit more of the gap?

I don't know. This is interesting to me none the less. I'm still expecting to be let down by whatever it is. Just because most of the time these type of things turn out to be a let down.

Oh yeah, if it's anything to do with adding more content to III, it's only inevitable they will draw the ire of many fickle Sharen's.

The tease said its bigger than a novel, so manga or a comic would automatically be out. I would also imagine more pointless DLC like we received with the bailu chan and casino boat would be out too. Not thinking it'll be action figures or anything else as that would be less impressive than a novel release as well. Only thing I can truly imagine would be some episodic content be in the form of prequel type stuff, parts of Shenmue 3 that were missing or maybe some back story? It could also be a cartoon for a streaming service, though that would be an awful idea so let's hope not. The tease of it being bigger than a novel but smaller than a full Shenmue 4 release would only suffice to say it's probably episodic content, which IMO is the best thing other than getting a full on Shenmue 4 and only really thing that fits the tease description.

Whilst I like the idea of episodic content, I think this would only really work if either they scrap voice acting completely or write a large number of episodes at a time so as to minimize the cost of taking the voice actors into the studio to record.

I have no real issues with anything they release as of this point.

I completely understood the outrage wit the DLC that we got as it very much felt like it was ripped out of the game despite having been put together with money generated through crowd-funding, but this far out I think it’s safe to assume that whatever they’re thinking of releasing has been developed post launch and has nothing to do with the Kickstarter (although I suppose Baisha could prove problematic in this regard given that it was promised as part of the Kickstarter even if the bulk of the work on it was done after release).

Ultimately I think they’ll catch some flack from some of the Kickstarter complainers regardless of what they release if it has the Shenmue 3 name on it, but from where I’m sitting any new Shenmue story content is good news.

That for me would make much more sense. They could focus all their efforts and budget on a single área and deliver the full Shenmue experience to the fans and new players alike and with a much more atractive price.

That's an interesting piece of speculation, but what kind of product would they produce independent on Suzuki or YsNet?

The above 2 reactions are pretty much what I expected haha. I can't see a mobile game going down well with the fanbase

I just can't see significant resources being put into any game that's not Shenmue IV at this point (side stories of other characters, Shenmue III DLC, etc). It would take away too much valuable time from the main series. I feel the only way that happens is if Deep Silver is trying to milk the fanbase with a few extra side releases to "maximize" their return on investment in Shenmue IV and V.

I would say a next gen Shenmue III "directors cut" would still make sense, but he stated that the announcement won't be a port of Shenmue III, but something new. Maybe he wouldn't consider a directors cut as a port? I can see how that will annoy fans but it's not uncommon for improved versions of games to release on new generations of hardware. A huge overhaul to the game wouldn't be likely but I would personally welcome it.

Other than that, I'll also agree that episodic Shenmue IV could be likely. Deep Silver could keep us hostage for each episode instead of each main release! :D Or like @taciturngreyhound said, perhaps it's a stand alone story to bridge into a proper Shenmue IV (I would say closer to something like Ground Zeroes since we know how the size of that game compared to MGSV). To me, that would be the best case scenario. Get the engine running on next gen hardware and get the tech and a few gameplay systems refined before you commit to making a bunch of content.

Aside from finding it difficult to see how they could ever recapture the level of immersion for which many of the fan base love the series, I’d see it as a complete cash grab.

To be honest, I don’t particularly mind them going down the cash grab route per se as I think that leveraging our love for the franchise is their best chance of raising the money needed for future games, but if they’re going to go down that route, I’d rather they gave us something that we actually want.

Episodic content could work in this regard as they could probably get away with charging a premium for each episode and most of us would pay it. I’d love to see them adopt a Radiohead In Rainbows strategy allowing us to pay whatever we want for it as I suspect this would yield far greater returns than them dropping episodes at £20-30 a pop.
