Discovering New Things? Small Details You've Noticed This Time Around?

I heard everyone eats KFC on Christmas Day?
Yeah, I saw that in a documentary. Something to do with a promotion KFC did back in the day which permanently associated them with Christmas for the Japanese, if I'm not mistaken.

So I had no idea you could work for more than 5 days (not including the very first half day of work) in Shenmue 1. For 19 damn years I thought the story was meant to progress because it would never let me go to the bus back to Dobuita after work. Sure enough, on the first full day of work I forgot to go to warehouse 17 and just trained on my moves for about 4 game hours unintentionally, went home and slept without remembering that I never got home in the past because I didn't know you could go home after 8pm.

Only realized something was amiss when they had me do the same exact route as the prior day. Was this something everyone else knew and I was too dumb to not notice it?
Indeed.

The guide I use for all of my playthroughs, in case I forget something, denotes it every time on day 2.

I noticed for (I think) the first time that during Ryo's farewell walk through Doubita that Tsuyoshi Murakami is one of the bike riding NPCs in the scene. He's a forklift operator at the harbour, one of the guys you race against and have lunch with. I haven't spoken with him much in game though as his responses were never really on topic, mostly about Ryo looking tough.

The guy who works the night shift at Tomato in Dobuita is also one of your co-workers in the harbor, in fact after you work in the harbor and talk to him at Tomato, Ryo will ask him about why he works two jobs

Just came across 3 cutscenes I never knew existed in Shenmue 1. I happened to walk in to the antique shop to buy a scroll and got the cutscene where Ryo shows the owner the Phoenix Mirror. I then went and showed it to the Russiya China Shop lady and got an achievement for it. I also happened to talk to Yamagishi-san in Sakuragoaka Park and Ryo showed him the mirror and Yamagashi told him about Yin and Yang. Those are some fantastic cutscenes with good lore.

Same! The new one for me was Yamagishi-san, such a nice surprise.

I noticed in Shenmue II in the Golden Quarter that the flags on the Grand Hotel were changed from the British Union Jack to a generic white flag that says resort. What's the reason for that?
Is the game getting released in China? They probably like to sweep that sort of thing under the carpet.

After seeing the mod video of walking the bike route I had a good look around when racing to the harbour, it is insane to think they built a bike racing segment and a race track and its 3 minutes in the game! Otherwise I can't say I really saw anything new but I've played through S1 so many times - so I just know where to go so I can't really face asking 20 NPCs about the location of sailors. I actually called Nozomi a lot and got the "Ryo almost says he loves her" phone call at the end.

Playing Shenmue II HD is my first exposure to playing it in English and it is still awful LOL. I’ve never seen YouTube videos of it! But I’m willing to play it in English until the end for my own curiosity. I’m also amazed with how realistic the water textures are at the harbor.

When doing the moving crates, I notice they use arrows. My Japanese DC copy didn’t do that. Just had to follow the directions by ear. Did the original XBox release include arrows too?

The English dub of S2 isn't great - I also noticed the arrows last night while playing and I don't think they were there before but I could be wrong. I would say the actual text translation is quite good but some of the voice acting is very odd, especially if you played it in Japanese first time round (Like i did as I'm in the UK - so had the JP/Eng subs DC release)

Yeah, the Chinese are very sensitive when it comes to what they call their "century of humiliation". Since it got a Korean release it's probably getting a Chinese release too which would explain the censoring of the union jack.

Yes, Kondo.

I noticed him for the first time, working there during this playthrough.

In the Xbox version, there weren't arrows, you had to follow your partner's instructions to move the crates.

It did do that, just not in the same way;

It has the D-Pad at the bottom, telling you, not which button to press, but which buttons you are pressing.

Its hard to explain.

This time playing Shenmue I've won the slot machine jackpot for the first time. I went to the fortune teller and she gave me the #3 so I used the #3 slot machine and after playing for about 15 minutes (real time) it happened and the siren went off. Won a cherry souvenir. Then when I saved the cleared file and found the slot house in the Golden Quarter in II they gave me the tokens I earned from the previous game, which surprised me. I never liked gambling before so I never played it, but I live next to an actual casino now (seriously) so I'm more familiar with it. What bothers me is I can't turn the tokens into actual cash.

Not sure if I forgot or I've simply never seen it before, but I encountered a part in my HD playthrough where I went home and was informed that Nozomi brought flowers to the altar room. Went into the room, and there was a cutscene acknowledging that Nozomi not only brought flowers for the late Iwao, she brought his favorite flowers. Very easy to miss.

It's funny to walk through Dobuita and sometimes the NPC's have partners to talk, but sometimes they are alone and the talk-animation is still playing. It's funny to see. And i like the english dub, specially the bikers before "You Arcade" and the girl in the "Tomato"-Harbor-Store.

The forward arrows for the crate job are completely pointless. They appear on screen for a fraction of a second. Delin makes it very clear at the beginning that you have to keep pushing forward, so I'm not entirely sure why they've been included.

Get this one all the time; its one of the nicest cutscenes and has a callback in Guilin.
