General RGG Discussion

yeah i know the digital thing but i never buy digital games. i make exceptions for special digital offers
when there is a game that could be good for 10-20€ but thats it. everything else physical only.
there was a time where i only played on Steam and not on PS4 and i bought way too much stuff
because it was all digital and reduced price here and reduced price there and at the end i had like 100 games
that i never played and 80 of them were bad anyway.

thats why i only buy physical PS4 games and only the ones where i know that these games are 100% for me

One thing I was thinking about in terms of something new. Do you think this franchise could ever do a true day/night cycle?

Considering how its story is structured as of present, it just wouldn’t work. You have to completely rehaul the game to get such a thing to apply.

Which is something they should stop imo. Ive bought every yakuza game since 2 on the ps2 but honestly, as much as I have enjoyed the series, if the next yakuza game is more of the same I'm not sure if I will buy it. At least not on release like every other game.

Judgment is sort of the same, but yet has a different kind of presentation which was enough for me. I like some of its distinguishing elements and some of the elements that were borrowed from Yakuza. I’m hoping future installments or spin-offs manage to do the same and I don’t mind that.

I will say this though, after going to Kabukicho for the last 7 years in a row...they do actually keep it up to date in Yakuza (or as much as they can.) Even as I walk around the real place and see some of the changes in the last 7 years I've been going there, I do see those changes reflected in game as well.

Kabukicho doesn't change that much in real life. It's a really small district (it's pretty much what you see in game with a few minor differences) and it's pretty much the same every time I've been bar a few changes. So I guess it makes sense to keep Kamurocho like that....but they do change it a little bit to reflect the real world Kabukicho when need be.

I do kind of agree that they should stop the yearly development cycle though. Just to keep the team fresh.

I occasionally stop by Kabukicho once a season and I do like how the games, at least in context to when they’re released and when they take place, accurately reflect the structure of the real life Kabukicho. And of course, some games introduce new places like how 6 brings us to Onomichi in Hiroshima, and how 5 uses Sapporo, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. I’m sure future installments can use them again, or use places we have yet to visit in more immersive detail like maybe Kobe (where the Yakuza are located in real life), or maybe Yokohama.

Yakuza Remastered Collection Right Now if you go Digital

Only 3.

I’m sure we are going to get a sequel, or maybe a spin-off with a newer character at some point, but I do see how the game can be improved with some of its mechanics. If possible, I would like to see a crossover and even Nagoshi has said he wouldn’t rule it out. Considering he’s already connected to the Tojo-Kai, I’d like to see how Yagami would interact with someone like Majima, or at least visit Stardust or Serena. Or if he interacts with the police again, would he meet Date? Will he need to get a loan, or investigate a loan in relation to Sky Finance? The sky is the limit from here.

After playing and loving my first RGG Studio game, Judgment, i consider myself a new fan of the series and i am very much looking forward to Shin. News soon eh? Can't wait, hopefully it will have the same localization treatment as Judgment, (Dual Audio,Dual Sub, EFGIS)

probably yes, i mean its a completely new main character, newer than Judgment, its a great starting point for new people
and Daisuke Sato himself just recently said that he would like to include even more dub languages
but its very expensive and it will take some time to convince everyone in the team to do it.
but i think they wont take out the english dub or the other text languages in Shin Yakuza
unless Judgment sales were a huge disappointment in the west. (i dont think that the numbers were disappointing)

Happy Shin Ryu Ga Gotoku week! Can't wait to find out more about the new game this week.

I picked up the Yakuza Remastered Collection last night from PSN and went back to Yakuza 3. I did kind of forget how stiff the fighting was in the PS3 games. I think I've been spoilt by the Dragon Engine. Especially coming directly off of Judgment which felt so free flow and fluid in its animation.

Still, it's nice to be back in Okinawa. I always did like Y3 even with its uneven pace.

I think a small CG trailer will be shown, and yeah I'd expect most info to really be shown at TGS assuming its there (and as its out early next year, I can see it being shown like past games with two big trailers - activities and story).

Oh I definitely need a small trailer to show off Ichiban's personality. But yeah, now you mention it I really want to hear the opening theme as well. I feel like the date might be a TGS thing though? Who knows, not long to wait!

Anyway, onto the finale of the finale chapter of Yakuza 5 (damn, after 4's super short finale this one is the exact opposite! And for my money, better because of that). The third chapter has one of the best sequences in the series - your annual visit to Kamurocho Hills (I took longer than I should have in this area as its the only time you get to explore it) and then... this:

I fucking love this bit, Watase and Katsuya are up there as Omi royalty alongside Ryuuji and Hayashi in my eyes. The build up to the fights (Kiryu's pre fight banter is classic badass Kiryu) while the boss music rocks, and getting to fight Kiryu as a boss in another game is always welcome (fun fact, I had 1 hit left as Saejima when I beat Kiryu, felt epic as heck as that's basically exactly how the fight should end, with all four characters basically defeated).
Daigo is still too trusting/naive though, he should never left Kurosawa with an opening... ah never mind, Kiryu would have done the same dumb thing... its like Yakuza 4's ending all over again! Katsuya's and Watase's exchange after this is really well done/acted... just another reason I really love Watase as a character and want him back. He's just great.
.

Now onto the end fights. And I can't wait. Some of the best final bosses in the entire series in terms of gameplay.

Presumably if the date winds up being the typical December date then there goes my life come the end of year between Shenmue III, Persona 5 Royal (Japanese version) and Shin Ryu Ga Gotoku. Not to mention Death Stranding, NFS Heat (which I'm kind of curious about now) and Doom Eternal...fuck! The end of the year really is stacked.

I imagine there will be a trailer this week. I could see a story trailer this week followed by maybe the "here's what is new in Kamurocho" trailer they usually give (as in here's the new wacky side activities) at TGS.

Also, do you think we'll get anything else announced like the year they first announced Shin Ryu Ga Gotoku along side Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Fist of the North Star? Like maybe a remaster of Kenzan for PS4? Or something else we didn't expect? Or will it be all Ichiban?

How many teams are there now? I know there was a B team working on the Fist of the North Star game and I figured there must be two teams. Then they went and announced and released Judge Eyes last year and that just made me wonder how many teams are there at RGG Studios?

Would be nice if another spinoff was announced, for a different genre; would be awesome! But I know, not the most practical or expected announcement. We'll see.

another samurai spin off exclusive for Japan.
will probably come to the west after Kenzan and Ishin, 2024
but they are still debating if people in the west like samurai stuff

I do wonder if another game aside from Shin will be announced. I wouldn't say no, but I bet they'll be focusing on Shin for the while, so probably not worth going with another game just yet, just focus on Shin and Online's "relaunch" happening next month.

so about the success of Judgment

“From our point of view, Judgment has exceeded the sales expectations we had in the West ; they are being very good, ”commented Sato. Given this circumstance and the insistence on the part of the developer, Ryu ga Gotoku Studio, for innovating with fresh bets, we asked him if the continuity of the franchise was in his plans.
“We, as a team, would like to continue working on future installments of the Judgment series,” he added.

funny little side note, the translation for all of the "european languages" was a suggestion from
the european distribution partner of Sega - Koch Media, which is the parent company of Deep Silver.

Anyway, had a free morning today so I tackled Yakuza 5's finale. Honestly, the only issue I have with the ending is the existence of Yakuza 6, and me having finished 5 already so I knew what would happen. That said, there's still so much to love.

The final chapter is packed with combat, for all the characters. Which I really appreciate. Its really fun. Its a pity actually they didn't have one further bit with Shinada and Saejima so I could have used all four characters prior to their boss battles. Oh well!
Saejima might have my favourite boss in terms of hype - I mean a Majima fight is always gonna make me sit up and pay attention, and this one is the craziest of the bunch (he can summon clones now?). Plus the intro, heat moves and dialogue are all absolutely fantastic. I really do love Saejima and Majima's rivalry.

Shinada's is actually better on replay for me, as I thought his phonecall after fighting Baba was Milky, not Takasugi which was way more impactful for me. I love that he has a place that he belongs, I really do hope he got a happy ending, he went through so much the last 15 years... Also, the fight with Baba itself rocks, and seeing Kosaka and his cellmates show up just in the nick of time was cool.

Akiyama gets the best ending that deserved to be followed up on. The guy saves Kamurocho basically. "The only money lender to stand above the Yakuza". Yeah, I want Akiyama playable again after Ichiban is an established character please. And bring Hana back dammit. I really liked Kanai as a boss/villain in this game. He's a tank, a monster, and seemingly pretty damn invincible as long as you don't stub out a cigerette in his eye. He gets right back up after you beat him and only gives up when he realises he's very out matched!

Special mention to Daigo, who actually gets to do something cool. Between this game and 3 it turns out he's a bloody good shot. Pity he didn't take that shot sooner, could have prevented a lot of pain. Also, Watase is low key the other best character in the game. He's my favourite villain for sure, and he gets a brilliant speech with Katsuya when he almost dies.

And the end with Kiryu... yeah, Aizawa himself barely cares about the plan, he just wants to brawl with Kiryu. I love how he's completely outmatched - this is a dying Kiryu who still manages to beat the crap out of him. Now while the boss choice is no Ryuuji, Nishiki, Mine etc. he is the best fight in the series from a gameplay standpoint, only rivaled by Ishin's boss. And both are fantastic for the same basic reason - rather than staying in one place this entire fight takes place through all of Tojo HQ - now between the previous games (1-3 especially) you should be very familiar with this place, and using it as the end of the game? Pure genius. And ending the fight itself in the front area, pitch black night, snow starting to set on the ground. Its fucking brilliant. The QTE's are all great as well, very brutal and raw, this isn't like Yagami in JE where he's using proper martial arts, or Ryo in Shenmue (same thing), this is just two powerhouses beating the shit out of each other. Only thing I wish this game did like Ishin was music transitions per area, as a more somber tone at the tail end of the fight would have been perfect. Tiger Drops, counters and red heat mode are order of the day against Aizawa, it really lets you use everything you have against him and the fight feels so. damn. good.
The end bit with Haruka is great, and ironically actually makes Kiryu's choice in 6 make all the more sense - people complain that based on the events of 6 Kiryu's choice at the end of the game made no sense, and to a point they are right, but 5 is basically mostly Kiryu's (and Daigo's) fault. So him staying would only cause more hurt. He puts it best after Daigo gets shot in finale chapter 3 - "why? Why do people around me always get hurt when I get involved?".

As for the overall plot itself, I like it. Its taken 3 playthroughs to get it though. For example, I finally get what basically happened to Morinaga, and I do like how the plan is basically just a brutal Tojo/Omi war. In many ways this should have really been the last game, I love the characters in 6 but the stakes in 5 just make more sense in terms of a finale game. Though I suppose you could argue that Kiryu getting involved in 6 shows how his time has passed, the Yakuza have moved on and he has no place there anymore. I loved 6 though, so I'm not exactly sad it exists.
.

So yeah, 107 hours later the game is done. And I have a good 30% left to clear before I'm really done. Arena, Amon, Chicken racing... still gotta clear all that. Its definitely still my top Yakuza game after all this time. The combat is pretty much perfect, the characters and areas rock, the side stuff is the best in the series aside from the arcade (which Judge Eyes wins). Heck, even Karaoke is top since it has Baka Mitai AND Machine Gun Kiss.

Now to wait for that Shin news this week!

Oh, and in terms of the actual remaster - the only issues I really have is the following:
No readable Manga.
The one single frame rate issue is with one of Shinada's heat moves (his steel bar heat move) which drops the FPS slightly, briefly. Otherwise its perfect.
Some noticeable pop in, and OTT bloom for signs. Some more textures/signs could have done with touching up.

But that's it really. Its a beautiful game, and it runs so damn nice 99.9% of the time. 10/10 for sure.

Indeed, couldn't have put it better!

It is just a big, long, wonderfully-crafted masterpiece, from beginning to end; I personally think that without localization costs and time, they were able to sink a bit more of both into the game (hence why 0 is similarly well-done) and that's why the three game stretch of 5, Ishin! and 0, were so bloody brilliant from a quality standpoint

No game in the series will trump it, IMO.

BTW, in terms of Akiyama, as you know, he is quite prominent in Shin's story, so I expect to see quite a bit more of him in the next game (if not the next few).

Yeah, Ishin, 0 and 5 are all content rich (and damn fun). 4 definitely started the trend, but the story was really short in that game - look at the ending that only has 4 boss fights, while the finale of 5 is 5 chapters long, 3 of which have quite a bit of combat content. Though people would probably argue that 5 had too much content at that point, I felt it was all justified to explain the plot, if a little drawn out at points regurgitating certain dialogue (Baba's talk with Haruka could definitely have been shorter).

Has anything been announced regarding a time or live stream of this Shin Ryu Ga Gotoku event tomorrow? I imagine they will live stream it on Youtube, but was wondering if any specific time details had been announced yet?
