Project Update #104: Shenmue 3 by Ys Net

A very good update with much needed clarifications and details.
It looks like the trial version might have been quietly cancelled though.
I've had a quick look at KS comments hoping that people would have a better understanding of the situation after this, but I noticed that many backers are still asking for refunds :cautious: ...

Why are you being so antangonistic to those who may be disappointed? Its 100% fair and reasonable for people to want what they backed and are not getting it. Yall people who whine about cry babys, whiners and haters are toxic as fuck. God damn. People are allowed to be disapponted.

Yall dont want to be looked at or labeled as blind fanboys but actions speak for themselves.

This is why participating in that topic is really difficult for reasonable people. Haters will call it as the worst scam ever. Fans will call people with legitimate concerns crybabies (always easy to act like this when you're not concerned by the change). There's toxicity on both sides, including here.

Which I still stand by.

Well you are wrong, its already been confirmed you can't generate the free or discounted keys without first offering pre-orders and sales on the steam store. But then you've shown in your posts on this forum that you are 100% intent to take only the cynical angle (without evidence) of every situation. You're a prime instigator of drama and cyclical arguments here.

This is a positive update... please don't sully yet another thread....

Look in all fairness there is a difference between being legitimately disappointed and outraged for the sake of outrage. And surely you know there will be people who will take the outrage path for their own means.

If one is disappointed then fine so be it....but let’s not pretend faux outrage isn’t a thing either and there will no doubt be the usual bandwagon hoppers who will find their next thing to feign outrage over

Given the massive info dump that is this update, I do feel like they would have mentioned if the trial version was cancelled. Cedric also reconfirmed it not too long ago.

I agree that it's getting a little close, but I still think we'll see it. What's Shenmue was released on the day Shenmue I was supposed to come out, so it would be cool if they do the same thing for Shenmue III.

I think we already have enough information that proves otherwise.

The only enough information is Tim Sweeney, aka Epic CEO, interpreting a policy in the most liberal way, claiming later that "he is waiting for Valve response for clarifications". I truly believe, and a lot of things point toward that, that backers copy were indeed part of the deal.

So we now know that funding from Deep Silver, Epic and Shibuya is at least $3 million USD.

Nah, because a lot of things are unrelated to the sum reunited here. There are stretch goals beyond the High Ground Battle system that were achieved yet this one isn't in. Baisha might have been dumbed down and Character Perspective System scrapped down (although I don't mind for this one. While this would've been an interesting idea... It also feels weird). More like they were given time for developpement and indeed could implement more stuff. Could be less than 3 millions but I believe it was far more (Maybe around 10 millions).

I've been looking through the Kickstarter comments myself. Still plenty of people looking for an excuse to be angry but at the same time there seems to be a greater sense of calm prevailing. At least now nobody can argue that Ys Net and their partners haven't done everything possible to accommodate the PC backers under the circumstances. We'll just have to see how things play out over the next couple of days to see whether the madness of the past few weeks is going to continue or not.

You can't generate Steam keys for games that aren't available for download.
I'm an indie dev and have revenue splits with various developers/publishers on Steam. The keygen field is grayed out until game data is uploaded.
No game data, no key.
Thanks for the clarification. Great to get some insight from someone in the industry.

Great update, glad to see they're going the extra mile to appease PC backers. Hopefully the refund numbers won't be as high as the online outrage would lead us to believe.

I agree.

Exactly.

This is the best update ever. Very interesting details of what has been achieved/implemented. The PC version is what it is, but good solution given the circumstances.

This isn't a warning by any means, but I just want to reaffirm what I said on the previous page about bickering/arguments in this thread. Please drop it. We're not going to have a repeat of the last update thread.

No I’m not arguing. That wasn’t my intent at all. I’m just saying people will inevitably hop on the outrage train and I think we all know they will...but no, I’m not looking for an argument

Save for crowdfunding. Game data can be uploaded before release. And I asked big profile indie devs about this.

Take it from a veteran of customer service and retail management. This was the absolute BEST solution they could have come up with.

That being said, I've relented against the angriest of customers, broken policy and given them a refund plus other compensations. They were STILL angry and firing off.

Some people you cannot please and never will be able to. To those people, as my boss and I say, it's best to "cut bait", give them their money back and see you later.

Take your refund and get out. Sounds cold, but if we(in this case Ys/DS) relent in the best possible way and you STILL want to bitch and disrespect hard efforts, we don't want your business. Simple as that.

Why would valve want to host a game for a handful of people, especially when they’re getting nothing out of it?

I am pretty sure I was refering to Baisha and the Character perspective system. Its irrelevant that other stretch goals have been implemented. Baisha and the CPS no doubt were a major contributer to some backers and it sucks that they are gone, and people will not get what they backed. I can appreciate the new additions while also be disappointed in the removal of old ones. Its not that hard a concept to underatand.
