Random Shenmue III Thoughts

Changing outfit was known since the kickstarter. May I recall you everyone that we're supposed to receive a Kickstarter exclusive ingame jacket for those who backed the Collector Edition (250 dollars and beyond) ?

still, this could be just a skin. like the exact same model of ryos normal jacket, just with a different color or with some other logo.
so far we only know that there is some extra jacket and that you can change clothes while training
but not if there is anything more.

Good points, what do you think of “Quicker Time Events” to make the time go by quicker? These QTE’s may happen at certain locations or during certain activities without affecting the standard gameplay. Imagine if there are QTE Timex mini games like Ryo adjusting his watch’s time to fast forward also in game if completed correctly.

I just don't know about random time progression, maybe there is a way it can work but it seems like its too much potential to mess something up.

Yea, probably just better to have a simple skip option for casuals.

Unfortunately I feel that Shenmue I+II HD may have done irreparable damage to the franchise.

1. It was the first Shenmue release in over a decade.
2. A lot of the decisions were made for cost effectiveness.
3. They advertised modern controls and the controls were still defaulted to d-pad rather than analog stick. Not the best idea. They even took out analog controls in Shenmue II.
4. They chased wanting it to be similar to the Dreamcast release than actually make it easier for new players. Newer controls are a part of that.
5. The bugs and freezes made for a flawed release. The western version was basically a beta test for the Japanese version. Not the best idea.

I fear for the series’ future. That’s being said, reading impressions by new fans who played through the games for the first time in the HD Collection gives me hope.

Eh? The response to the HD collection was largely positive and it was liked and appreciated by a lot of people. Those who criticised it the most, were hardcore fans within the Shenmue community who know Shenmue 3 has nothing to do with the ports Sega did.

It's not like there was swarms of negativity and controversy on the internet when the ports were released. The only place that had such negativity was Shenmue communities like here...

I disagree; while the re-release is definitely a poor showing (for the reasons you gave and many more), it's introduced many people to the franchise that otherwise wouldn't have given it a shot, and I think Shenmue III is likely to be more successful as a result.

Imagine you've never played Shenmue before. You're told that Shenmue is this heavily story-driven game that absorbs you into its world. Would you want to start with Shenmue III? You can either start playing from near the middle of the series and miss all of the buildup to the current state of the story, or track down a working Dreamcast and the relatively expensive copies of the original games to catch up. A lot of people are going to write off the game because of the investment needed for it.

The re-releases allow people to do that catching up a lot more cheaply, and a lot more conveniently. It sucks that it's a bad port, but it's still going to have a positive influence compared to having no port.

I'll be honest. I haven't paid attention much to how it was perceived. I just read a lot of complaints. Maybe you're right and it was mostly isolated in the Shenmue online community.

Can you show me the positive responses to I+II? I read the Shenmue III hype thread elsewhere and it depressed me.

That's a fair enough rebuttal. I guess I'm concerned because of the sales figures shown. If Shenmue III has similar sales we're going to be in trouble.

DMCV won't sell as little as the DMC collection. Kingdom Hearts 3 smashed KH2's total in like a week (and probably obliterated whatever the last collection was).

New games pretty much get more sales.

You're right. I guess it's in my nature as a Shenmue fan to be concerned about the series' perception. I'm being entirely illogical and paranoid. I really want this to be a successs. I trust Deep Silver to pull off a great advertising campaign for the game and in Suzuki-san's team delivering the goods.

Fingers crossed.

The reaction to the EDGE preview was very positive, so y'know. I think people will look past the bullshit and give the game a chance, when the chips are down.

So I've been thinking about how waiting should work in Shenmue III, I know some are against the press button to wait option entirely but I think it is kinda required for most newcomers or people who disliked the first games that want to try the game out still.

So, I have 2 main ideas.

1. Benches and books. Just place benches around the world that Ryo can sit on and read books that help his martial arts stats. Like in Fallout 3 & 4 allow the user to set how many hours that Ryo will sit. Unlike Fallout, which just skips to the time set immediately, in Shenmue III there should be a time lapse showing Ryo reading, standing up to stretch, sitting back down, showing other random NPCs sitting down beside him and them talking to each other. I think the amount of time to wait in this method should be limited to 6 hours in game time, and should have 2 options "Wait until next objective" and "Set amount of time"

2. Just allow Ryo to go back to whatever room he is staying in at the time and sleep/nap for however long he wants, as well as have the option to wait until next objective. If there are multiple objectives and he oversleeps and misses the deadline for a main one, just reset the game to before he overslept. Also have several unmentioned deadlines where you can complete objective alternatively, so if it doesnt reset you back you know you can still do what you need to some other way.

This is in addition to all the mini games, training, job distractions.

i was and still am against the idea of having the time pass system in SII let alone having a more robust version of it.
if they wanted to evolve the flow of the game they can add more and more stuff you can do in the game world to pass time... more attraction and activities and ton of side things to get you busy.

i wish they will return back to the root and cancel this feature all together.

It's optional and that's why it's a good feature. You don't have to use it.

yes but they did also miss with the system in other areas like some of the minigames are not passing time like all SEGA arcade titles and darts.

Which meant, as a result, that the first game had to prevent you from playing minigames in arbitrary circumstances so that time-critical stuff could trigger correctly.

There are pros and cons to every choice.

I'm starting to believe Joy or Xiuying will show up in Shenmue III. Lisle's been in the spotlight quite a bit leading up to the release.

I think both will show up. I just cant imagine Ren in the game without Joy, I have always considered them a duo.
