Random Shenmue III Thoughts

What points did you think were high and low spags?
In my humble opinion -

Highs:

. The majority of the bedroom scene after Ryo gets his ass kicked
. The kid talking about the break-in
. The scene immediately after with Ryo and Shenhua (needs tweaks in places, but otherwise pretty good at showing Ryo is recalling something)
. Shenhua's reaction to hearing Ryo's father was killed
. Ryo preparing for battle at the end of the trailer
. A lot more eye movement compared to The Prophecy trailer, much improved
. Ryo is generally more outwardly expressive than in the previous games

Lows:

. Some, but not all, of the lip sync throughout (I firmly believe that'll get another pass at least)
. The old master (he also has the "bright eyes" thing that has plagued other characters too, though I expect it'll be fixed)
. Eyebrows are basically static in almost all cases ( but they move for Shenhua's reaction and we know they've included it in their facial animation rigging from Dev Room 4 + the survey video)

It's not quite clear cut when trying to distill it down to a scene by scene basis, as it looks for the most part they've established a baseline but paid more attention to some scenes over others.

Generally I think they're just going to keep doing animation passes to build the standard up over time. Bit like layers on a painting. Ensures a more even spread of attention, even if they have marked a few specific areas for a little extra work.

The Shenmue 3 minimap design looks really on point! I like it!
Wonder if you can actually run in the grassfields or if you're forced to allways walk by the pathways like in shenmue 2.

Seems like it's true that you'll waste stamina by running on the open world, hence the need for eating regularly.
Not sure if I like the idea.
It worked for deadly premonition though, and kinda ok in FFXV. The latter being less intrusive, since it gave you buffs instead of the negative approach deadly premonition used.
If they add a wide variety of local foods, might be interesting to expand the world.

There are a ton of items, maybe Ryo can cook different dishes..
I'm imagining a kung fu master that became a cook and Ryo has to help him run the food stand so he can teach him or something like that.

I was reviewing the Magic trailer (I've only watched it a few times to keep some suspense), and I appreciate that Ryo is going out of his way to learn from others: "I'd like you to teach me a technique."
There was a bit of that in S2, but I'm excited to see how he humbles in this part of the journey (or doesn't-- he gives a classic "I'll do anything!" response, like a man drooling over the Wulinshu).

Given how much more robust and important training Ryo up is going to be in Shenmue III...

... imagine how satisfying that fight with Lan Di is going to be. All those hours spent training, all that work filling up your skill book, all leading to this singular climax. Just anticipating it is making me excited. Yu deciding to flesh out the training has gone beyond just enhancing the game mechanics - it's enhancing the emotional impact of the story and its climax in a way the final bosses in Shenmue and Shenmue II didn't.

Even ignoring the fact that Lan Di is the guy we've been chasing since the opening cutscene of the original game, by making the power and skill to defeat him something the player actively has to work for... is nothing short of genius.

The mini-map does look amazing. I wonder if we will still have to buy maps like we did in S2? Will they grey out parts until we buy them? Or maybe since we are Shenhua's guest in the village it is assumed she will be our guide.

If they're purchased, this actually seems the best of both worlds: blind exploration for the purists, but a clean HUD for those who desire maps. As you note, though, perhaps we could have the fog of war style as we did getting to Bailu Village.

Based on most modern day games, the on-screen minimap will not be blurred out, but there should be an overworld map in the main menu screen which should appear once locations are discovered.

Asking about friends Ryo for some reason does not mention Ren to Shenhua, I cannot wait for them to meet aka S: "Who is this?"
R: "You didn't tell her about me!? Jeez...!" R: "Uhm..." Also Shenhua talks about how it is better to come by horse, clue Ren riding in. I would love that.

Ren and Shenhua's clashing personalities playing out is one of the biggest thing I'm looking forward to in S3. Along with new fighting styles and locales.
